Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hey guys! I've just set up an IRC channel to use for random chats. IRC is a like a chat room. Here's how to use it.

    1. Go to >>> http://webchat.quakenet.org/
    2. Type in a nickname for yourself (no spaces, use _)
    3. In channel, type #C&H PASSWORD*** e.g. #C&H student
    4. and that's it!
    ***Please PM me or our three resident OPs (Pygmalion, Davidius or Konata) for the password. Preferably, one of them :p

    If you like IRC and want to use a program instead (which has more options, and an ability to turn on sound so you know when there's new messages)

    To start simply download mIRC here and install as you would any other program

    Run IRC and select Tools > Options. This screen should be the first thing you see upon running the program

    Fill in the basic details; i.e. Your alias, an alternative (just in case great minds think alike) and e-mail

    Click the "Servers" tab. Open the "QuakeNet" folder and select a server

    Go back to the "Connect" tab and click connect

    Finally click Commands > Join channel

    Insert "#C&H" into the field and there you go!

    Anyone else with @ before their name is an admin in the room. Be nice!

    is there not a boards.ie rule against advertising sites outside this one?

    When it's got to do with supporting and expanding the community, it's fine. Fighting Games have one, that's where I got the idea.

    It's a really easy system. Basically it's a channel set up on a server, and it relays messages between different computers attached to that channel. boards.ie used to have one but eh... Well, bubbles happened. :P

    By the way Q is our bot. He sits there and minds the channel for us so no one can steal the name C&H. He also has a few other uses :P
    Type 
    /msg Q HELP
    for a list of commands which you might find handy.

    Right I'm lost...I'm in there and I can see jumpy hitting people with fishbot (:p) but I can't write....how do I write in it???!

    At the very,very bottom there's a text bar, it's hard enough to see because it's not really distinctive or a different colour and it's only teeny. :)

    Took me ages to figure it out :o

    The IRCis set to +m or moderated. That means only @ and + people can talk. And seeing as how no one has + it's essentiallly closed. I'll open in on busy nights, but it was taking too much traffic away from this place. Thing of it like a bar that only opens when the owner has enough effort to put out the seats.

    Eh? Might I just say, that's kinda a bollox. You set it up so we could all talk away from MSN (which is what we were doing anyway before), and it succeeded in that and all C&Hers could chat freely. And it was busy, which you seem to say like it's a bad thing. It's an enhancement of the forum, not a detriment. So what if C&H got less posts because of it? Does that matter, we were communicating anyway.

    This is a rather stupid and annoying decision imo.

    If it's going to be re-opened at all, it should be done under a new name.

    As things stand, it's offering nothing to the C&H forum. If anything, it has been to the detriment of the forum from a traffic point of view. Also, much of what is said and discussed on the IRC channel would not be permissable under the C&H charter, so I'd rather the two were not associated by name.

    Probably should have one during the summer when everyone is (even more) bored.

    IRC was a terrible distraction from doing study so I kinda support its current closure. It's a noble decision to shut it down since it looks after my best interests. :)

    +1 on that. There wouldn't be a lot of us online past, say, midnight, what with people in school and college. And then, we're (I'm using this word in as nice a way as possible) restricted to certain threads. From my experience so far, it's really just people trying to get to know their fellow boardsies, cause it can get very messy in the Den.

    Okay, how about I open it between midnight and 5am? Call it Clearasil and Watersheds. Or the ONION club.

    But to back up my reason, I've been offline for less than 24 hours and the amount of threads with new posts has stretched to the second page and then den has about 10 pages of new posts. Point proven about detrimental traffic. I'll open it at midnight from now on, see how that works :)
