    I missed US Murph.

It's just so good to have the lads back. Great entertainement, I think it's their enthusiasm that makes it a better show than the other stale sports shows in Irish media.

First two podcasts are thoroughly enjoyable. Drico interview was great, I really enjoy sadliers bits. The GAA coverage was good in depth analysis. US Murph's return. All great

Not sure about Murph's Garden though :-)

Just wondering if its going to last, I'm not a sports fan but i used to dip in and out of OTB if was pottering about the kitchen at night....dont know if i'll be dijg the same with a podcast.

Looking at their soundcloud stats, you'd have to wonder...the first full show got 23K plays, thats after a week, compared to 40K listeners on Newstalk a night?

Thats just for soundcloud. The podcast has been number one in the itunes charts for the last nine days too.

~12,000 Soundcloud plays for Ep. 2 in 24 hours. Not bad. :)

Really enjoyed it. Great to have more of their regular contributors chipping, great to hear US Murph again.

I'd be worried if they have Richie Sadlier on every week though. I know he knows his stuff, but IMO they'd be better off to vary the pundits as much as possible.

Still no direct link for the .mp3 either, and the audio levels were dodgy in parts again, but these really are minor things.

That's true although I think they are doing reasonably well on the Pundit front so far, given some of their former contributors are still on Newstalk. I wonder if the pundits are appearing on the Podcast as a favour or would they be getting paid?

I think the Podcast is going well, great coup to get Brian O'Driscoll this week (giving his first interview since the 'one more year' decision. The download numbers seem to be healthy and I think they are getting the balance of different sports about right. It is difficult to cram a week of Sport into an hour but it sounds good to me.

I still hope they all get back on the Radio in a fulltime gig soon either together or separately. I don't think Podcasting to an Irish audience will pay many bills for five people. Even if they ultimately go their separate ways it is nice to have the Second Captains back for an encore after their abrupt departure.

I'm enjoying the podcasts, but for me they are really lacking a "Ken's newsround". Having Richie on every week eats into Ken's time. I would much rather have heard a Ken's newsround-type take on the pig's head story than Richie's scatalogical Millwall anecdotes. I like him, but there is only so may times that he can keep going back to that "when I was at Millwall" well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,116 ✭✭✭starviewadams

Think Richie's contributions are pretty good myself, fits in perfectly with the humour of the lads. Not much scope for a newsround style segment from Ken given the weekly nature of the show, especially now that the football season's over.

Not much of a rugby fan but thought the Brian O'Driscoll interview was excellent.

its an absolute load of ****e. not to mention the problems they are having with audio. Is there an iphone in the middle of the table using that voice record app?

heard a bit of saddler going on about the death of his dog and initially i thought he was talking about his aul lad. muppet. (just wanted to stick that in)

looks like they had a pretty good background/research team in newstalk which they didnt bring with them.

    brutal. dreadful. awful.

    big shame

I agree, I think Sadliers contributions have been very good so far. The bit in the first podcast about Frank was brilliant. A little marley and me moment...

I'd love to know the budgets they had on newstalk compared to now. I suppose it was due to how long they were away, but I think they are just as good if not better. The lack of ads, news breaks is great.

Loving it so far... Keep it up lads... Though I think they should have two shows a week. Monday review and Thursday preview show.

I haven't turned on the off the ball NT show for over a month at this stage. Can't see that changing anytime soon.

I wonder who the lads will have on the podcast to discuss England V Ireland

I prefer the humour of the newsround myself and think a weekly newsround would work prefectly well, but as you say it's a bit academic now since the season is all but over. It all depends on how permanent these podcasts are going to be.

Oh, at a guess - Richie. Normally it would be either either Dion Fanning or Daniel McDonnell, but as they are Indo journalists that's not going to happen. Maybe Emmet Malone.

Minor brush with fame there 10 minutes ago.

Ken Early behind me in the queue at Fresh, Camden St. Heard that unmistakable voice "eh, tweny marlburrow red please", turned around and there was the great man himself standing there.

The guy is a hero to me. I was going to say something supportive re the podcast but you know how it is when you go blank and the moment passes ........

(Felt I had to post that)

You would miss Ken, that reference to Zeus coming back to earth as a begger when talking about Mourinho was brilliant.

Just out of curiosity, would any of the hardcore OTB fans pay for the lads podcast? Say if they finished with the Irish Times at the end of the month or whatever, would people be that devoted to pay a few euro for a subscription?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,673 ✭✭✭Stavro Mueller

No chance unless it was very keenly priced. Even though I like podcasts in general I'd be very reluctant to pay for any of them. And I'm saying that as someone who does pay for music etc. Whereas an album I buy might end up being something I listen to for years to come, I consider a sports podcast to be very much in the here and now and will be mostly irrelevant in a short while.

Charging for it would kill it. Hardly anyone would pay for a radio show podcast.

Yes, it's like the paywalls that newspapers put up. People just go elsewhere for their news.

Unless the papers all jump and paywall together - the IT and Independent are both moving to a "soft" metered paywall system at the end of the year with free limited page views or general news and paying for higher usage or specialist/niche content.

The Second Captain's podcasts fit that strategy of providing enhanced digital content to entice subscription while keeping the lads in the radio "shop window" (ideally until 2FM comes to its senses and kills off that stale imitation tribute show).

And they will be screwed. If you only want the news you can find it in a matter of seconds on Google.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,673 ✭✭✭Stavro Mueller

That's it in a nutshell. There's nothing I want to read so badly behind a paywall that has had me reaching for the credit card. Much as I loved the original OTB, I can't see myself paying for the podcasts. Anyway, even if people did pay for them it'd not be financially viable.

Just finished the Eamon Dunphy interview, twas very good. The extra time they can dedicate to the interview without breaks makes the show far more interesting for me..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,444 ✭✭✭✭Skid X

Slightly awkward moment today when Eamon Dunphy asked them had they not heard about Johnny Giles being kicked out of School for playing Soccer.

You could almost hear Eoin thinking to himself "Did we talk to Gilesy about that? Should we mention an old Off The Ball Conversation?" ?

It was almost a 'Should we talk about things we said to John, now he's gone?" moment.
Ah well, nice to hear Dunphy talking to the lads. Another quality show.

Edit: That happened only in my head. It was Brady, not Giles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,116 ✭✭✭starviewadams

Best show so far imo, plenty of time to delve nice and deep with the guests.Dunphy interview was very interesting.

Was it not Liam Brady who got kicked out of school for refusing to play in a GAA friendly before his inter cert?

You are right, I appear to have swapped Giles for Brady there :o
I should really listen more carefully.

not sure what to make of dunphy and kinnear after hearing about how they felt about playing for ireland. why did they bother? it sounded like an inconvenience for dunphy anyway, having to leave liberal england for a few days.

I don't know, as uncomfortable as his words were to hear it was great to get a feel for his actual experience of playing for Ireland. To see how emotional he was about it is always good to hear. He isn't wrong either about the apartheid in Irish Sport. An apartheid that is still present today in places. It's Dunphy though, he is always gonna try be that bit sensationalist?

I don't think it's fair to dismiss Joe kinnear's commitment to his international career based on Dubphys words.

Podcast is getting better and better, yesterday was great. Looking forward to next weeks already.

I was surprised by what he was saying. From previous interviews, he always said he loved playing for Ireland but that the FAI were a shambles. And he always says the same for the current Irish team.

Great podcast again this week. The Eammon interview was very interesting, and i have a lot of time for Brian Kerr.

As for the GAA bit, really enjoyed that too. It's amazing how out of touch with the whole thing i've become since i stopped listening to OTB. Since very few of my friends are interested in it, the show was my main source of news/chat etc.

I still really miss both newsround bits though. It is definitely great to have the lads back, but the live element to the show is sorely missed.

That interview with Dunphy was fantastic.

It's a very interesting insight. I hope they can come back on the air full time soon.

As someone mentioned earlier in the thread why don't they do two in a week? A monday/tuesday "review" show and a thursday "preview" show. Seems to me like a good idea.

It looks like they have the time and they could then get more regular slots in like US Murph etc.... on a weekly basis aswell as doing the lions, gaa, racing and any other story that tickles their fancy.

I personally liked the random sports guests and stories that they picked up on and brought to life.

It's that time of the week again...
We tried... we tried so hard this week to get the show under a hour and a half. But we failed. And we're sorry. All we can offer by way of consolation is Richie Sadlier on Ireland against the Faroes, the very best GAA pundits in the land, Matt Williams on the Lions, and the return of the El Chuckle Brothers, Spanish based journalists Sid Lowe and Graham Hunter, on the return of Mourinho. We also welcome into studio one of the greatest hurlers of all-time, and the purveyor of one of worlds manliest handshakes, Nicky English. It's all in this week's Second Captains @ The Irish Times.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/sport/second-captains

    It's up on iTunes too.

It does alright. I've convinced myself that its going to be a 2fm gig. New 2fm boss starts today. @secondcaptains has recently started following the RTE archive, RTE's head of sport and various RTE sports reporters on twitter- even Des Cahill. The RTE archive was referenced on last weeks show.

interesting the richie sadlier seems to be the only contributor that has nailed himself to this podcast only. he hasn't been on off the ball since the beginning of march. even gerry thornley of the irish times is still doing rugby on wednesday evenings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,898 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

Another very good listen. Loved the bit at the start about all the young fellas being ripped these days, it's that sort of quirky stuff I missed when they weren't around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,283 ✭✭✭Deedsie

I really enjoyed it again, the trial by fire that is the Nicky English handshake was my favourite bit.

Does anyone have any guesses what the announcements might be? I think it might just be a second podcast each week. I think he said it was just big podcast related news. So I'd be amazed if it was anything to do with live radio.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,399 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

I listened to the show, very entertaining as always. I must say that the quality is improving w.r.t. caller quality, sound levels, etc (or so it seems to me at least).

Whoever is in charge of putting together their soundbites/clips is very good, I liked the Dunphy bit at the end. Plus their humour is great (e.g. Pierce Brosnan's Irish Emigrant Shout Out, Murph's 'Continuity' Country Pages) :D

Shows that the show as a whole (i.e. the 5 lads) works great, they can be transplanted anywhere as a team and provide great work.

Hopefully announcement is more podcasts or back to radio, we live in hope...

I dunno why they feel the need to apologize for the length of these. They seem to want to go an hour and a half but they have so much to cover in a week of sport. I doubt people are complaining that the shows are too long, considering it has to be the same listenership that listened to 3 hours nightly.

It's really good to know the quality is as high as ever. I could listen to Sadlier for days.

I haven't really seen a complain that it's too long. I like the 1.5 - 2 hour length, I split it up through an evening... I actually prefer the podcast format myself, it was rare I listened to OTB live (unless I happened to be in the car), was always via podcast...

They apologised on twitter for it being too long. I reckon they think that if its too long people will be put off listening to it. I personally skip the bits im not into.
