Yeah, I mean it's not like they hate Trek - it makes them a lot of money. However it does seem strange how they treat it. Star Trek is possibly the most famous franchise on TV. Everyone knows about it, even if they don't watch it.
It never has received the mainstream crossover that some genre shows have: The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Lost etc. But it still has a large following that generates a pretty large and reliable income.
Production costs are probably quite high for a station that has few genre shows. Their shows consist of comedy and cop shows (The Big Bang Theory, various NCIS shows etc). And the whole convoluted legality of movies etc certainly doesn't help. Especially as, while the movies do OK, they are never gonna be up there with the Superhero and Star Wars movies.

As someone said, the 50th anniversary passed last year with barely a blip. Sci-Fi has never been hotter and it would have been a perfect time to carpet bomb media with Trek updates: Movie, "New series starting TODAY!!!!!", reinvention/reboot. Retrospectives etc.

So, while I don't think the hate Trek, I do believe that they begrudge the costs involved for the revenue received. They'll keep it going in case it suddenly does go full-on mainstream but really they are just dabbling their feet.

As someone said, the 50th anniversary passed last year

That was two years ago now and getting nearer to three yeas ago now.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

The winged thingy could be a caduceus symbol - I'm re-watching Enterprise and it's prominently displayed in the sickbay there - maybe they are going to give us a story about a doctor.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators, Help & Feedback Category Moderators Posts: 25,504 CMod ✭✭✭✭Spear

To me the wings seemed more reminiscent of a phoenix symbol. Given how they tried to hide the twists last year, I doubt they'd be so on the nose as to announce any Romulan presence so blatantly.

  • Registered Users Posts: 262 ✭✭tromtipp

    maybe it's a phoenix-caduceus to symbolise a doctor risen from the ashes . . .

That possibility occurred to me too, since the casting was made public fairly early.

I wonder if they will address that spore that landed on Tillys Shoulder

That was very surprising, had thought they would at least keep that one secret. I do wonder what capacity he's back: I'm presuming it's just a continuation of Stamet's 'visions'.

Oh is the doctor back? In some capacity? That's good. I liked him as a character and actor and I liked their relationship. Thought his death was the typical American "Bury Your Gays" in that they tend to kill off any sympathetic gay character.

Star Trek: Discovery's Mary Wiseman introduces Short Treks

Was an ok first episode but didn't really add anything unless this is gonna be part of the second season - this is a totally new concept (at least never remember this brought up before) so could be an interesting storyline
But not complaining as it's still a bit of Trek to see us thru.

I thought it could not be viewed here. Have looked on sites myself and no luck yet in finding somewhere to view it. Did you use a streaming site or is there somewhere that has it where we can view it this site of the Atlantic?

Also maybe we could have a separate thread for these if we do have somewhere to view them.

    Season 2 trailer:

    Wooo!
Klingon hair! Proper Klingon battle cruiser!!! Presumably Pike's "Number One"! Spock!!

    Looks pretty good :)

Well that looks pretty good I must say, and the retconning seems in full swing. Klingons hairy once more n all.

"The red angel" though, that's a bit Mystery Box. Everything else has me enthusiastic though. Captain Pike could be a classic captain yet.

I'll use spoiler tags even though it's public info for some time.
Yup, that's explicitly Pike's Number One, from way back in the days of the original pilot.

I think I'd have preferred if they'd held back more stuff from the trailer such as
    the Empress
. Unless we're in for a major bait and switch like the first season.

Section 31 seem to use holographic disguises or similar, or at least they did in the post season/credits clip at the end of season 1.

Yeah, Pike is the big, happy surprise for me: I wasn't sure what to make of that announcement (beyond cynicism over the Enterprise link), and had doubts about Anson Mount for casting, but from what I've seen from the trailer he looks to be a 'true' Starfleet Captain - and if Discovery somehow manages to pad out Pike's backstory to make him into a bit of a hero or greater character than it'll be a happy case of a prequel doing good to the backstory for once.

    I’ll call it now.

I would be stunned if thought hasn’t been given to a new show showing the Pike Enterprise years.

We have a ship and three of its crew on discovery. I would dearly love to see it.

Is Pike going to be a regular now? I thought he was only supposed to be in a few episodes (I may have just misread that somewhere). 'Cos I certanly like the vibe he gives off in the trailers.

I really liked the looks of that trailer.

Series regular for S2 from what I have read.

Ah, OK. Cool. I'm assuming they'll say something like: "But what about your ship?" "Ah, I handed it over to some other fellah" Huh? Huh? Nudge nudge...

I suspect while Pike's away, 'Number 1' will be in charge; there's a brief clip of her, complete with TOS style uniform. I'm betting we'll get a 2-parter at the start, ending with Pike & Number 1 parting ways while the former takes temp. command of the Discovery. (Side bar, didn't realise Rebecca Romijn was playing Number 1).

Out of curiousity: wondering what Season 1 haters thought of that trailer? Seemed like there was enough division over that first season, but has this trailer done anything to tempt folks back?

I was going to watch season two anyway but I think the changes seen in the trailer are for the better. I'm not so sure about another season of guest captain instead of just promoting Saru. Promoting Saru and replacing Pike with a commodore would serve the same story purpose and if they absolutely must tie it to an existing character there's a few admirals from TOS they could have used Robert April might have been a good pick since he was already mentioned in STD.

Mostly because it was a different actor and they didn't really look alike.

Very disappointed with that trailer. Its just more of the same silly magic nonsense. I do not see what everyone is getting so hyped up about it over. Sure the is a k7 Klingon cruiser there but also all the other klingnot ships as well. Don't think it looks that great myself. Thinks its getting over hyped and ye will be in for a big disappointment when it does eventually air.

There is a reason they don't really care about the piracy of it - creates buzz, people still buy the blu-rays and most shows would never continue without the initial freebie viewing. When something is hard to get it becomes more of a commodity (isn't that how Apple works?)
Nothing is hard to get anymore, it doesn't make it more of a commodity. You either want to pay for it or you don't and as always, US TV firms haven't thought it through and lost out.

I didn't mean recast actors have to look exactly like the originals but in the case of the Menagerie having one Pike on screen in the footage from the Cage and another in the courtroom and them looking nothing alike would be an issue hence the disfigurement make up.

I got that, I was making the point i seen no one else making in that this guy seems to have been cast for no other reason than he looks like a younger version of Pike from JJ Abrahms movies.

Now maybe they picked the best actor and decided it was easier to go that route but I just thought it stank of a room of casters who'd never even seen TOS and/or the pilot

Just a thought so don't shoot - winged object and last Season 2 poster some mentioned Romulan design, soooooo could it be then the D7 cruiser is not Klingon but Romulan as there was an exchange of tech between the two factions with Romulan getting battlecruisers and Klingons gettings cloaking tech...... and as i type that i recall T'Kuvma having already used a cloak in Battle of binary stars..... hmmmm
