Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What I don't get with salads in Germany is that you get the salad before your meal, and most Germans eat it all first before the main course appears. I used to live there and I always loved the puzzled expression on the waiters' faces when they delivered the main course and the salad was there uneaten. They'll even sometimes go to take it away assuming you didn't want it!

They can't handle it, next time eat some cheese before the meal and watch their brain explode.

Its a vorspeise , an appetizer before a meal .I often still order a side salad as an appetizer here

And after all the pushing and shoving invariably you end up with a clown at the top.

Himself grew up there and from time to time we go there for family reasons, we both hate going there (not the family), I can only think of all the money I'm spending to get there when I could be spending it going somewhere I really like. The first time I went there it all felt very familiar, nothing exotic about it I'd seen it so many times on TV and films.

Not always, to be fair. It's ironic in a country that abhorred royalty and privilege where 'anyone' can be president, that 'anyone' has to be absolutely loaded to begin with or otherwise well funded to get anywhere in the race.

Made my first fondue in ages just last weekend as it happens! Used Gruyere and Emmenthal though.

Yeah that sounds good, there's loads of different combinations, I was in Switzerland last summer and they had five or different cheese variations in one restaurant, it's not touristy everyone eats it. The thing I don't get though is raclette, it's basically melted cheese scraped onto potatoes and pickles, like a cheat's fondue.

It can be a Vorspeise ordered separately, but often it's included as part of the meal but comes first anyway.

It's the Yanks, they destroy everything they get their hands on, they've done it to Hallow'een and are hell bent on doing the same to our national holiday and we just let them.

How would you suggest that the Irish dictate to the Americans how to celebrate a holiday? Do you really think anyone there cares for your opinion on the subject?

I was in a ski resort in the USA once and went to a fondue restaurant. They were surprised when I didn't want their "special" of cheese fondue for starter, meat fondue for main course and chocolate fondue for dessert. I think I would have exploded if I'd eaten all that!

I quite like raclette if done properly. The cheats way is to have an electric grill in the centre of the table with little pans that you melt the cheese in, but if done properly they'll have a whole cheese cut in two mounted in a special rack that's positioned in front of a crackling wood fire, and scraped off onto the plate for you. Very atmospheric in a nice cosy wooden alpine restaurant!

I was nearly knocked out but the hum of melting raclette in a restaurant in France. Luckily, I was finished eating before the melting started.

A kilo of melted, strong cheese, some cold meats and a few spuds, anyone??

I think a three course fondue would be a real gut buster, it's stodgy and great for keeping out the cold but not 3 helpings.

.. and the pickles, don't forget the pickles :D

Ah, it's good hearty mountain food, not something to eat every day I admit though.

What are your feelings on tartiflette?

Yeah, especially seeing as the resort was at nearly 3000m, which affects your appetite too.

I was confusing tartiflette and tarte flambé, the former sounds good, I'll definitely be trying that.

Reblochon can be tricky to find, but I recall someone in the food forum saying that Gubbeen is a decent substitution. Must try making it myself.

Theres a really good food store / cheesemongers here in Cork called Iago, I've seen reblochon there.

Why people buy pretty old houses and proceed to destroy all their character.

I also don't get people who resent books, reading, any kind of art and design and fashion.

I really don't get the idea of eating particular foods and nothing beyond them because that's what was served to you, growing up. Youre not going to be struck down for eating an 'exotic' furrin vegetable that isn't a potatoe!

The nice thing about being an adult is we have our own choices and the means for them.

Ivan Yates going to an Indian restaurant and having the temerity to ask for chips instead of rice.
Good Jesus that man is some boor. Having a go off of anything that isn't racing, business or sport as a waste of money.

There are a few different people on boards that I strongly suspect are the same person. They get into weird confrontations with each other.
Seen similar on youtube comments, two users arguing with each other for ages and for some reason you just think- that's one person. What a saddo.

There are foods I have no interest in trying but its not like I rigidly stuck with a basic list of foods. I just feel more drawn to some new foods than others.

People setting their work status as "full time mummy".
Don't understand the mindset in the slightest.

You didn't hand in a CV for it.
You didn't fill out an application form for it.
You don't have a contract for it.
You don't get a taxable salary for doing it.
It's not on any job website that I've seen.
You never see it advertised in shops or businesses, "Full Time Mummy Needed, Cash in Hand Contact 081111111 for More Info"

Obviously I'm being sarcastic but I still don't get why so many parents do it. Social media has become a very "look everyone, it's me!" platform.

Yes!! I have a friend who even if we're sitting in watching Netflix will apply a full face including heavy dark eye make up and lashes.

We were in the airport at 5am for a flight and it was the same.I have no idea what ungodly hour she woke up at to look like that then.

In a way fair play to her she takes pride in her appearance while I just washed my face and moisturised but I'm guessing it comes from a place of insecurity.

Yeah, what have Travellers ever done to anyone? It's a real mystery why people aren't fond of them, especially after everything they've contributed.

The grass is greener on the other side syndrome.

    I'll never understand it.

Valuing who and what I have comes easily.

Also the notion some people have that love is the same as infatuation and can just wear off. It gets deeper and mellower and richer and stronger. And the idea that you can only truly love one person or only share your life with one.

Its great, knowing everything and always being right :D

How exactly did this mad run on toilet paper get started? Was it triggered by something specific?
If it was a bad stomach bug going round where you would need a lot of extra tp I would understand it, but why tp and not bread like during the big snow?

In Ireland at least it's because they're all imported. If you remember during the snow they didn't have them back in stock for a few days.

    Nowhere in Ireland manufactures them.

Speaking of which I dont get people who cannot be fecked to tie their laces, tuck or button their shirts or make the slightest effort.

Also I REALLY don't understand what Im missing about this virus?
Sorry to drag it in, but what are people basing "the Spanish Flu and Ww2 of our generation" on? Projections of the next waves?

I was never on board the "its the flu!" dismissive bandwagon but I feel Ive missed something in between that and where we are now.

Id just like someone to précis it for me?
