Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

In fairness, Strava have a long history of adding updates that nobody asked for, while ignoring repeated and prolonged requests for certain features from users

It should be easy enough to have an IT team sitting somewhere with all the footage sent to them

My earlier spin uploaded from Garmin to Strava and I've no bother browsing Strava (on my phone) now.

The segments on the app now have the avg% gradient in them. On pc running my mouse over a few locally I think the avg is ok but saying to myself no f'n way does that road have 8,9 or 10% on it even for 10 meters.

How much is the gradient on strava to be believed? You know what I mean you can run your mouse over the segment and watch the numbers. Run this left to right on the profile graph you'll see number like -11% between 0 and .2km in the run to the climb

I wondered about that myself. I wonder it is people using watches to record their run/cycle. They momentarily lift their wrist to look at the watch, or wipe their brow, and the resultant effect is causing a gradient spike by distorting the altitude.

i think the gradient info on the segment is set by whoever created it, and carries with it the elevation info from their device, even if it's inaccurate.
it certainly used to be that way, i remember mad short steep segments which were clearly fictitious were more of a thing a couple of years ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,107 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

you can create a route in Strava (which uses the gradients from the map I think), or use RidewithGPS or MapMyRide to compare the gradients.

Some segments are obviously incorrect, but by and large I find them close enough.

Is there a way of flagging these segments? There is one near me that has a max gradient of 500% and an average of 31% and it is basically a flat road.

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators Posts: 40,297 Mod ✭✭✭✭Seth Brundle

If you're looking at the web page, there is a drop down in the top right labelled "Actions" which gives the opportunity to tell Strava about the segment.
On the app, there is a link to tell them at the bottom of the screen.

Strava segment data is mostly from the early days when GPS alt was king and we had no barometers. They've no process to fix it using the thousands or tens of thousands of runs over each segment.

    Another long standing feature request.

I have been really enjoying the Tour du Rwanda highlights over the last few days, some brutal climbs in there and its rainy season too so there is some 'edge of the seat' descending too. Super coverage.

Opinions on black shoes with black socks? No matter how much I try I feel like a priest on a bike.

Just to note on this, i hate the black shoes, white socks, black shorts combo looks awful

White shoes for me, then can either go white or black sock with most my shorts as they ae most likely black

Jesus! I'd say you had a small poo.

Yer man on the phone is my barber, nice lad, I'd have thumped the dope on the scooter.

I know this study is limited enough because its self reported data but I found it a bit surprising that 20 min power for A4 is over 4w/kg??

Looks like I've a long way to go fitness wise before I even consider lining up

I'd love to hear the conversation between the two of them.
I'd have been tempted to throw him under the bus.
    See what I did there?

    Yep.

No bigger bus to throw him under - that's a VT - the largest bus in the Dublin Bus fleet.

It seemed to me that the barber apologise, asked was he okay, from my perspective it looked like he landed nuts first on top of the bollards, but both just went their way.

I wouldn't read too much into, plenty get out of A4 with far less, tactics and either a good sprint or a lucky break are far more important.

My first thought watching the video was that the bus driver was very aware. My heart was in my mouth as it came into view. Great stuff on your driving.

do bus drivers get any training in observation?
of course we'll claim your reactions were due to being a cyclist.

agreed - 75kg A4 would need to be holding 300 watts for that 20 minutes, and (imho) there are very few who would be doing that. Most A4s wouldnt have that, and as Cram says, tactics and a good sprint are way more important.

of course we'll claim your reactions were due to being a cyclist.

when i was about 14 or 15, i was cycling along the malahide road, when a double decker (the 43 to swords) hit me in the ass. He kept driving. I was knocked into the grass verge, but mostly unhurt. I saw a few friends at a nearby shop, and was telling them about it, when a passenger of the bus came over to me - she and other passengers had see the incident and told the bus driver, who for whatever reason just continued on. Later, my father rang the garage, and overhead a conversation between the driver and the control room, where the driver said 'Yeah, I think I hit a bike on the way out'

From my perspective, i was lucky i wasnt killed or seriously injured, but looking back im always amazed that someone would continue on driving after knowing and being told they hit someone. I really hope they have changed their approach to training since then.

I guess it's like everything - good and bad
