Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Change your audio settings to output to hdmi.

Have you applied the HDMI drivers that came with the system? You'll get your display (up to 720) using standard Win 7 drivers but no sound. Applying the HDMI driver from the disc will let you go up to 1080 and route sound

Looking back through the thread and no one seems to be installing 8Gb of RAM.
Any particular reason? does it only recognise 4Gbs?

What are you going to do on a slow Atom nettop that requires 8GB ram?

Have installed all the drivers now :-)

    All ok.

Nothing special but has to pass the wife test so would like it to be as fast as possible. Just want to be sure that it will actually make some difference.

I know there's a lot of love for Openelec on this thread, but for a number of reasons my preference would be to install W7. I found the following on the Arctic website http://www.arctic.ac/en/p/living/entertainment-center/382/mc001-dvd.html

At €230.81 (€204.70 + €26.11 shipping), this would seem to be better value than buying the barebones + DVD model & adding memory, HDD & W7 OEM. However it looks like it is shipped from Hong Kong, so would this also potentially be subject to 23% Irish VAT? At this price are there better options out there for a cheap W7 HTPC? ..... Acer Revo & Zotac Z-box seem to be more expensive..... unless I go for 2nd hand on EBay....

Looks like the bare bones is gone up to €199 on amazon.de

    DVD one is still €119

However looking on the arctic site the MC001-N is now only €118.85 including postage to Ireland.

I bought the barebones one but i'm beginning to suspect that's correct!

Well DVD one would work out at about €135
so there's about €95 in the difference.

    4 Gbs ram(~€20)

    500Gb Drive(~€55)

So you've €20 left over for Win7. If you're going down that road it looks like a good option as long as 500gb is enough for you.

Having some problems installing openelc here guys
Dl'ed 2.99.2 from the site for theAtom processor
Put it on a usb stick and navigated thru the necessary instaler steps

Now openelec logo sits on my tv saying it cant open a /stogare/.xbmc file or directory and then /usr/bin/autoupdate has an error - integer expression expected

    Any help?
    Thanks!

Yes thats the problem you were looking the the CPU and forgot about the GPU.

Download the generic version not the Atom version.

There is no 'Atom' build. You are probably talking about the Ion build, in which case you've installed the wrong one. The Ion build is only for systems with a Nvidia Ion GPU. The MC001 has an ATI GPU, totally different.

Its the Generic build that you want (for now).

The barebones was the great deal for those of us running them as openelec xbmc clients pulling content off our network storage because we only needed ram and a USB stick. No one to my knowledge said they were a better deal than the other offers if you actually needed a DVD,HDD and W7

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,810 ✭✭✭Calibos

Fòr those only joining the thread now. If you want one of these for the reason I described for myself above, it's the MC001-E that you want on amazon now. The units those of us bought early in the thread for €99 the MC001-N, has now gone up to €199. Now ironically it's the unit with an added piece of hardware, the MC001-E with (DVD-rw) that is selling the cheapest at €115.

Someone already pointed this out earlier but it's a point worth repeating.

[EDIT].....and....... it's back down to €99 (as of 14th Feb)

Barebones MC001-N unit @ €99 is the one to buy once again if you will be using it for openelec xbmc with content on network storage.

    You are TOTALLY responsible ;)

I have ram/a HDD and a USB stick ready to rumble and a vanilla OPENELEC box was my initial intent.

I just had a weak moment thinking I needed to put W7 on it earlier. It has since faded :o

I'm pulling my hair out here. Want to do a hard power on/off but the remote at the moment will only soft power on/off from suspend which has issues. I need to go into the bios to disable EUP which will then let the remote power the unit on from cold and power it off too.

Holding delete while booting does nothing, the machine still boots into openelec. Same for all other F keys. Removing USB stick with openelec and then booting holding any of the aforementioned keys jut gets me a message to insert boot media.

    Any ideas?

Setup a static IP with you ssid and it should connect.

Wired is best for streaming tho!

It's best to reboot after any network settings changes.

    Wireless USB I.K.Y.S.

My brother has a wired USB. I'll borrow that for a test.

    I'll edit my post Do-More.

Deffo think I'll buy another 2 at that price. Loving my current 4 for openelec. Can use 5th in shop for sports on 1080p lotto screen till bro gets his new 1080p tv for his room in a few weeks/months whereupon it goes to his room.

I'm going to install HDD and DVD drive from dead laptop into one of my current ones to try Win 7 on and assuming its better than my 8 year old P4 dell I browse and do light tasks on, then I can use the sixth MC001 as a stopgap PC till I can afford to build myself a new i5 rig whereupon that sixth unit goes out to shop to replace 5th unit that eventually went to bro's room. Confused....So am I :D

Basically because I already own some I get to try before I buy again by installing Win 7 on current unit and this is not a hassle because they open up easy and no existing disc based OS to wipe and then have to reinstall because I run openelec off a USB stick.

Is there any advantage/disadvantage to running the OS off a USB stick like that?

My RAM arrived yesterday, so finally got to set mine up.

Clean installed Windows 8 32 bit on it which went very smoothly even activated Windows Media Centre with a free key even though that was advertised to expire on Feb. 1st. Happy days!

Windows seems to have got most things working with automatic updates, but not the TV tuner, will have to look at that later, hopefully just a question of manually installing drivers.

Installed "Jump" remote desktop app on my Android HP touchpad to use it as a remote control, but so far I can only get it working with the desktop displaying on one or other device at a time, will have to spend some more time to figure out if I can use it in dual display mode.

Also stuck XBMC Frodo on it all seems to be fine, but haven't had a chance to play around with it much yet, that will probably have to wait until the weekend.

[Edit] Figured out I need to set up Jump with VNC instead of RDP, just haven't had a chance to do it yet.

Got into Bios with Wired Keyboard and disabled EUP.

All MC001's now do full shut down and Boot from Cold with Harmony Remote power Toggle button.

Enabled Overheat Warning/Auto Shutdown while I was in the BIOS. 75ºc warning and 85ºc auto shutdown.

Installed a SSD and put Win 8 on it. XBMC playback is really choppy now. Was running openelec prior to this and all was perfect. Anyone any suggestions of settings may need to play with.

Update your ATI video drivers and make sure hardware acceleration (DXVA) is enabled in XBMC (under settings > video > playback)

Yeah tried both of those already but hasn't made any difference. Says the driver is up to date.

    I kinda regret buying it

Just find it very slow. Opening programs for example media player takes an age and controlling XBMC with the remote is awkward because of the damn delay and it hates the mouse full stop

What did you install and where did you install it?

    XBMC on Windows?
    XBMCuntu?
    Openelec?

    USB Thumbdrive?
    HDD?
    SSD?

    Using a NAS?
    Wired/Wireless?
All art etc stored on my NAS.

I have my kit wired to the router with Openelec on USB stick. Only real slowness is when the library updates on boot or I use the wrong skin.
Using Aeon Nox and it is okay,

    Playback is always 100%.
Running through the movie collection at speed sometimes stops for a sec after a few pages of scrolling.

    All controlled with Harmony Remote.

Am considering putting a HDD in it rather than a SSD as I don't want to fork out a load more cash on a fast SSD.

He mentions media player so I presume he's running windows.

I'll be installing Win7 on one of mine today to try out.

My 8 year old dell browsing/light duty pc is on its last legs. It's either a new mobo for a dead Vistro 1700 laptop for another 70 or 80 over the cost of an MC001-N that will admittedly be faster despite being over 4 years old, or its one of these for €99 that can be moved on to XBMC duty once I can afford a new build for my main PC.

Because I've been using the oil dell exclusively for the last year or so, even the MC001 with its D525 1.8ghz dual core Atom will probably feel snappy in comparison so I'm not sure I can give a valid opinion on these, though I will report back here on how it feels later.

On thing I will say is that I saw a YouTube vid of one of these running Windows 8 and then opening XBMC as an app and it looked pretty snappy in both. Whether that's the relativity colouring my opinion again coming from an 8 year old P4 Dell or the vid is a bit of a fake with something more powerful hidden away actually driving the screen, well one never knows.

Windows on an Atom is bound to be slow, its a very slow processor. That's why I thought people were nuts putting 8GB ram, SSDs, Win7, Bluray drives etc into this. The basic machine is inherently weak so putting a lot of money into it is not worthwhile (in my opinion).

The point of OpenElec is that it is an extremely stripped down OS and runs fast even on slow machines like this.

XBMC remotes for your phone are the right job for controlling XBMC.

On android im using yatse and I find it very good.

Yep. Having said that, I put one together for my sister with 2gig RAM and an old 500GB HDD and installed Win 7. It runs XBMC smooth even using the Transparency skin. Sure, you're not going to run photoshop and aftereffects on it and I'd have preferred to run openelec on it for her but she wants browser etc but, overall, it's doing it's job pretty freakin' sweetly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,748 ✭✭✭Do-more

A lot probably depends on what you are used to. Both my home and office desktops are ageing Dell Vostros (thanks to previous bargain alerts) with dual core pentium E2140 1.6GHz cpus which benchmark at 906 and have a Windows experience index of 3.7.

The Dual core Atom in the Arctic benchmarks at 711 and the Windows experience index is 3.5.

I run photoshop on my desktops daily and whilst I don't do any real complex stuff on them it happily works away.

Sure the Arctic is no powerhouse but I'll add very little else to it now that would cause it to slow down further and I find it runs Win8 and XBMC very nicely indeed.

Didn't cost a lot more than an OpenElec setup, 4 gigs RAM, a recycled 120Gb HDD that was sitting in the drawer and €15 for Win8.

Gives me a lot more versatility and the ability to use Netflix which I wanted all with an OS that I am familiar with so no tearing out of hair (yet anyway).

I possibly should try sticking OpeElec on a usb and booting from that to see how it compares but I and certainly happy enough with this machine running Windows.
