Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Because no channel wants to kill the post news schedule dead. If 9.01 was real the audience for whatever followed at 10 would suffer drastically. Its why ITV always has News at 10 as they know that post that slot there's only a few million watching TV.

    Just a note that
In 2009 rte had 17 presenters
    7 men and 10 women
In June 2018 they have 11
    2 men, 9 women
and lots of these would have been rare relief presenters
I wonder if there is a chance of any more presenters.
It would be good to see the likes of miriam and david from prime time presenting the news a bit

But I thought it was virtually impossible for women to succeed in the media in ireland such is the massive gender bias that exists.

Dee is making sure the women’s agenda is pushed home in every current affairs program.

You look at every single person who reads the news on RTE day to day male or female and they do it better and more naturally than the pairing on the 6 one how many months on ? It's clear they have the wrong people in the wrong roles here. Catriona Perry did an excellent job in Washington imo but put her in front of the auto queue and she's terrible.

Why are we surprised, they gave poor John Murray the 9 to 10 slot on radio.

To a dimwit like me it was obvious he was a square peg in a round hole after two or three months, not suited for the role but they persisted.

Ditto MsPerry, was good in DC but not suited to her current slot.

I was looking at the rte schedule for next week and on the news now channel it showed that there was live midday news from 12pm to 1pm on monday and live afternoon news on tuesday from 4pm to 4:30pm. Is this just a mistake or are they actually creating more news bulletins.

  • Registered Users Posts: 396 ✭✭Ireland trains

This isn't the first time two women have presented the news together.
Sharon Ní and Úna presentend six one on occasion together and even eileen whelan and eileen dunne.
Aengus and Una would have made a good six one team if they hadn't retired

This is the second week of perry not being on six one.
    Is this permanent

I didn't think that RTE News Now had any original programming. That it was just replays of News, Current Affairs and Nationwide from RTE One.

    And some World Cup matches.

Ray Kennedy on with Keelin Shanley again this week.He is excellent and should have replaced Bryan Dobson, much better to have him and Keelin Shanley together.

I thought Perry was just ok. Brian O'Donovan in Washington is that rare thing in RTE. He's animated, engaging and seems to have great energy. He's interesting and interested. Hes someoneceho had tge BBC style amd will probably find his way there eventually. So many dull as dishwater types floating around there-Eileen Dunne, E Whelan. Can't think of the others.

Agree re Washington guy - he is very good, but Perry was very good there too. Don’t watch 6 one as much as I used to. Think the two ladies dress like they are going to a wedding. Don’t get me started on the Weather forecasters ...

I've said before that the two Eileens and Sharon are more or less the last remaining members of the old guard.

Not sure I would say that the longest-serving newscasters are the dullest though. Anne Doyle was never dull... :D:);)

I can't believe they gave Perry the 6.1 job.

She is just terrible. The most obvious this is she has a lisp so how they see her as suitable to be on newsreading duties is strange.

Secondly she's just not a natural. Her body movements are as if she's trying to follow instructions the whole time. You'll see her move the position of her arms when sitting down and it just seems so fake and pre planned. She sometimes makes jokes too and it's just cringe.

Also she reads like our teacher told us how to read for our communion....taking a pause between each word making sure to pronounce each hard letter fully.

Ray Kennedy is by far the best presenter. A pure natural.

    Shanley is fine.

Even an amateur like me could see that Catriona Perry might struggle at the role.

Was great in the USA, in fairness,in my opinion , bombing badly on the 6.1

Unfortunately it seems like perry will be back on 6 one as shanley will be doing weekend radio for miriam.
Possibly eileen whelan might be on six one a bit soon as she hasnt been presenting the news for a while

Catriona and Eileen probably on holidays at present, also Six One will probably have one reader and finish at 6 30 during the, "silly season" in August.

They never have 2 on in August, also they go to 30 mins, due to the Oireachtas not sitting and no courts.

Anybody else out there who has started to watch the 6 One news again since Ray Kennedy started regular position with Keelin? I know if/when Perry returns I won't be tuning in. I could manage when she was on just as US correspondence but she's too difficult to watch for a whole hour.

    Soz caitriona nothing personal :/

    Ray Kennedy is a star.

Can't believe RTE succumbed to the SJW equality tripe by putting Perry in.

Perry gone for 3 weeks now
I assume she will be back soon (sadly)
Any idea on when the news revamp will take place

It a pleasure to watch without Caitriona Perry . Ray and Keelin are so relaxed and easy to listen to

Catriona is back tonight but with Ray Kennedy this time round. It looks like Keelin is gone on her holidays.

    What is this combo like?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,239 ✭✭✭Pussyhands

Perry just sounds like she's trying extra hard to pronounce everything perfectly. Not a natural at all.

Since the changes I rarely watch the 6.1 anymore and instead tend to tune in for the 9pm version which is usually Sharon or Eileen, both total pros. I still cant believe how Perry got that job, surely she had to do screen tests in the studio to see if she would be comfortable in it? Then again this is RTE so maybe not. Either way we are probably stuck with Perry on the 6.1 for years to come so for me its better to avoid it altogther rather than get myself annoyed watching it !

Doubtful. I'd say they just trawled through their female presenters/reporters and gave it to someone decently well known.

It was an appointment, not a competition for the job.

Those two were ‘appointed’ think they made a mistake.

Nothing personal but not a good combo.

Catriona interviewed Leo Varadkar who was in Kerry this evening, between a short time delay on the transmission and her long drawn out questions it was hard viewing.

Very harsh comments about Catriona, I don't see what the issue is.

The consensus is that she is not suitable to the role.

For me anyway she is too uptight , not relaxed , no charisma , no warmth . She seems robotic .

Yeah it's absolutely nothing personal to Catriona. I like her and was a big fan of her stint in Washington and she seemed to be enjoying her time there. I saw the first few times she did the news, and god love her she looked so nervous. I mean of course she was given the big seat she was taking over, but it seems the nerves are still there. I really hope she can become less nervous and just relax(easy for me to say I know) as as she showed in the washington correspondent, she has the talent.

I've no issue with Keelan and it's clear she is able to do it. Catriona just seems nervous or is trying too hard to not make a mistake which can come across as roboting and not natural.

Like all these jobs, basic background is what makes or breaks you.

It’s the innate learned knowledge of stuff which you just ‘know’ that usually carries the day.Gives you the confidence to appear in control and relaxed.

Unfortunately the younger punters in journalism don’t seem to have it, sure they can google stuff and that, sure they can present reports and stuff, but when forced to think on their feet and react to a moving target and pin down the relevant important information they seem to struggle.

They are not confident enough in their own background and are afraid to show themselves up with a major blooper.

That’s Catriona’s problem on 6.1 I feel , excellent at reportage from the US but I feel struggling to grapple with the totally different scenario of the 6.1 slot for the reasons outlined above.

€5 says were on for the hat-trick for the next person she interviews!!

There is a nasty, sexist edge to some aspects of the criticism of the two ladies here.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 907 ✭✭✭Under His Eye

The only sexist ones are RTE and their man hating style of management.

Catriona interviewed Leo Varadkar who was in Kerry this evening, between a short time delay on the transmission and her long drawn out questions it was hard viewing.

My sister mentioned that to me the other day and remarked about during Perrys incident with Donald Trump (when Leo was on the phone to him and Perry was in the Oval Office) that Leo told Trump to tell Perry "thanks for the newspapers"- this was in reference to Leo becoming Taoiseach and his face made the front page of a few American papers so Perry (like the good Head Girl she is) went out and bought them in Washington and posted them to Leo to help stroke his ego.

As my sister remarked the job of a journalist is to ask hard questions and hold power to account and you cant exactly do that when you are going around behaving like a lick arse to the Taoiseach of the day. The relationship between politicians and journalists is supposed to be adversarial- you could never imagine someone like Jeremy Paxman licking the hole of an MP as Paxman takes pride in his job at giving them a hard time on behalf of the taxpayers.

Its not just a criticism of Perry but more so of the state of journalism in this country- when the TV cameras are switched off all the political correspondents are buddy buddy with Ministers of the day and are often seen drinking pints with them in Leinster House. I think it was David Davin Power who was up drinking with Biffo and the FF crew till 3am the night before Biffo did that famous radio interview still pissed- Davin Power tried to keep a lid on the story and was saying there was nothing to see here until Ursula Halligan scooped him and reported what had actually being going on in the residents bar the night before. So on one hand you had the RTE political corresspondent (who is paid from our tv license money) trying to put a lid on a hot story while Halligan (who is paid by private TV3) actually reporting the truth and facts of the story.

[snipped the personal dig] there is something off with some of their outdoor broadcasts, there was even a partial white line between the presenter and the background, its distracting
