Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Except in English. Of every feasible variety.

Don't suppose you do IPA transcriptions, though. What does "some" rhyme with, for you?

Some.. and here’s the big surprise

    Sum rhymes with sum.

Who would have thunk that now?

BB not quite understanding the concept of "rhymes" there, methunks.

Maybe you've somehow managed to contract some sort of cultural cringe about the "short u" sound in one of these, but not the other. Odd, but there's no accounting for folk. Or for language being a virus from outer space.

Only thing ‘odd’ for me is a dude saying ‘munny’ instead of ‘money’.

    A la Mammy O ‘Rourke.

No accounting for ... what do they say....nowt as queer as folk.

As there's no such word as "munny", your meaning here is fairly opaque, but money does rhyme with funny, honey, etc. Unless you're, y'know, saying it "wrong". Like, I dunno, the painter?
    A la Mammy O ‘Rourke.
A la "speakers of English", pretty much!

Can only imagine you're doing that Dooblin thing where "short-u" gets merged with "short-oo". Except you're doing it inconsistently between a pair of homophones.

So reeling in the years is on at half 6 now and it seems like everyone who's had to fill the slot including Ray Kennedy who paired with the ladies while they had time off has done a better job at this than the two ladies imo.

Even the lad who normally does the sports did a better delivery this evening.

These "month of Sundays" programmes -- 30m slot, and much of the second part is sport -- don't do live interviews, so it's hardly any sort of demanding task. Unless they have a total meltdown "better job" is largely going to come down to "I likes me the look/sound of him/her", really.

I pretty much stopped watching the 6.1 because of Shanley. Can't stand her
Can she stay on holidays a bit longer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,542 ✭✭✭dublinman1990

Keelin Shanley actually is not on holidays. She has been filling in for a presenter on RTÉ Radio for this summer.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 3,829 ✭✭✭Cork Boy 53

Shanley and Perry will both be back together co-presenting two RTÉ 6.1 News hour long special editions on Saturday and Sunday. covering the Pope`s visit to Ireland.

Was watching the news tonight and one of the reporters (female) was holding a microphone that had an external handle and a frame. It looked like it was self leveling.
What was the craic with it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 400 ✭✭Ireland trains

The revamp is Supposed to be done 'early next year' with people saying January but if id its likley to be the 9th as it will be a decade since the last revamp.
Hopefully with the 2nd desk they might add sports presenter to 9 oclock.
Will probably also be used for interviewes on six one.

She has her critics, but I'd prefer her any time to the annoying cramped voice of Sharon Ni Bheolain.

They're getting a second desk? Does that mean we've reached peak "presenters standing aimlessly around different parts of the studio"? Or that they now need to stand around and shift between different desks, now that we're supposedly jaded with that?

On the 6’olock news, does anyone ever notice after the ad break is over the two in the studio pretend to be talking to eachother when in actual fact they’re just looking at eachother saying nothing.

I notice they do this with whoever the sports presenter does be to.

You sure about this? I'm fairly sure I've on occasion heard them talking, when the sound mixer guy (or whatever the correct job title is) messes up and leaves their mic live too long.

Maybe the rest of the time they're just silently mouthing 'has the langer in the booth killed the sound yet?' to each other, before they actually speak.

Does anyone who watches six one remember the shot at the left of the studio which showed the studio and virtual space that they used after breaks.
They used in for budget coverage but there was new lights on the ceiling. Is this part of the revamp

Something of a surprise on this October Bank Holiday, as Nuacht TG4 presenter Eibhlín Ní Choistealbha made the journey to Montrose to present the One O'Clock and the Six-One. ;)

    5zk6u0.jpg

It's probably unlikely that she'll be doing this on a regular basis, though.

Siún Nic Gearailt also used to present the occasional English-language bulletin - as well as the bilingual current affairs programme Seachtain in the mid-2000s - but these days concentrates on reading headlines as Gaeilge.

Why is it a surprise, all the regulars have the week off, certainly the BH

Nuacht TG4's presenters usually don't get called to Dublin to present English-language bulletins - even on bank holidays. :)

As I said, Siún used to present the occasional bulletin as Béarla, but doesn't do so these days.

TG4 presenters can and do regularly present RTE bulletins from Galway when required.

TG4 presenters can and do regularly present RTE bulletins from Galway when required.

The Nuacht bulletins on RTÉ1 have been broadcast from Baile na hAbhann for nearly a decade now (save for a few weeks earlier this year when they made a brief return to Dublin).

And now, of course, they use the same set and graphics as TG4's bulletins - and are even branded "Nuacht RTÉ le TG4". :);)

They should stand in front of a big screen the most time bar one on one interview beside a desk...

They are moving out of Studio 3 temporarily in Mid-December. New studio will be unveiled in late January.

The quoted update was not given to me. It was displayed on another forum.
"RTÉ is currently undertaking a major renovation of our News studio (Studio 3). TV News bulletins and related programming will be moving to other studios from mid December to allow for the work to take place. The new studio is due to be unveiled to viewers in late January. We will be announcing further details closer to the time. We hope you and others on the forums continue to keeping watching us over the period."

It will be pink, it's an all women affair now, even the guests and experts they interview are women. It's a bit contrived.

They have finally moved out of Studio 3, pesumably last night or this morning, to get the refit done for January. They debuted it on the 6.1 News this evening. It is not looking too bad. The backdrop is done on roller blind set up with a plasma screen being used for the sports & maybe the business news during the weekdays. The desk is an old one used from Prime Time a few years ago. What are everyone else's views on it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,542 ✭✭✭dublinman1990

Here is the current view of Studio 3 as of yesterday.

and we're on half measures a week before Christmas. Shocking slackness. If armed revolution took place in the United States they'd miss it.

Absolutely Henry, like they missed the tsumani back in the day.

Thousands killed and the stults were in Goggins horsing back the vino.

Crazy schidt that these overpaid scones are ‘pulling back’ already.

    Not good enough.

It is a joke they are on half an hours news 8 days before Xmas. But thats the civil servant mindset that pervades within RTE- "Show 'em Reeling in the Years, they'll be grand"

Being banging on about that for yonks Mu.

But as long as we tolerate being pissed down on by the folk in Montrose, that’s how we will be treated.

They would be brave people to even think of a license fee increase .....Dee... are you listening?

The same civil servants who get 2 days off over Christmas is it? Ridiculous statement almost as ridiculous as the news being half an hour long 8 days before Xmas.

When I was in the civil service I was forced to take leave over the Christmas.

The Sindo has it on their front page too but you have to register to read the article online. Something about Catriona Perry co-presenting the 9pm news from London on the night of Theresa Mays no confidence vote. Can someone post the article?

Seems like quite the spat, ni Bheolain not impressed about being told she was co-anchor with Catriona Perry for the 9pm news. niBheolain said she wasnt doing the 9pm news unless it was on her own. Head of News stood her down and got a replacement in and she hasnt presented the 9pm news since.
