Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. 20-7 I think. Lowry’s been the stand out. Some great offloads and a fantastic break from his own half to set up the try.

Great to hear. Having the ability to play 12 will be another string to his bow...but he would be seriously tested defensively there

I think it was more a case of just getting him on the field. Not sure there’s any 12’s in the Ulster academy - Moore and Hume might be able to though. For what it’s worth Lowry’s break for the try was from first receiver - dummy to Hume then broke the line

Curtis is a brilliant prospect at 12. Or has he been handed a senior contract now?

Got a development contract (alongside Tom O'Toole) just this week with a full contract following next season

Although the Curtis playing today for the Ulster Development side was his younger brother Graham.

    How'd younger Curtis go?
Scary to think we could have most of our backline nailed down for the next decade and their all under 25:
    • 9. Curtis jnr
    • 10. Lowry/McPhilips?Burns
    • 12. Curtis Snr
    • 13. Stewart
    • 11/14. Sexton?

Curtis jr has a great pass, and he was a very strong tackler. The kicking was mostly left to Houston, so I can’t remember how his box kicking was. He got moved onto the wing in the second half.

Went well - nothing spectacular, but no real mistakes from what I remember. He has quite a big boot on him. Had to make a few in goal clearance kicks that found good touch. He was a good defender - which is to be expected, because I’m certain he’s a few kilos over 90. Thought he generally moved the back line well, but they weren’t getting consistent phases together, so its hard to tell what his running game is like.

It should be a fun battle between him, hawkshaw and Byrne for the u20 squad. Munster have a fairly well rated 10 as well don’t they?

Is that Harry Byrne? I didn't realise he had another year to go.

It's good for Ulster to have a couple of out half prospects coming through. I'd be interested to hear how Thomas Armstrong goes for the Ulster U19s today. He impressed me as a 5th year (assume it's the same guy) in the Schools Cup final a couple of years ago.

Ben Healy from glenstal , quite possibly the best of the lot

Possibly. Has best kicking game IMO of the lot.
Developed a lot in Nenagh with top coach Pat Whelan there.

Personally I didn't think he looked that great in u20's but I wasn't keen on the 15 either whereas others were raving about him. No doubt I'm way off.

Byrne had just turned 19 for the rwc iirc. He was 18 during the 6 nations. Quite impressive.

Yeah Silvester is solid at best

Sam Dardis playing 1s with Terenure this year it seems. Imagine Adam La Grue will push too to be involved with them.

Will probably impact their Prem 1 team.

Aye but that's what u19 means - turning 18 that year. So playing 1 year up. Super.

Right, but he only 18 during the 6nations. He's eligible again next season.

Yeah but thats what being an u19 is.... you turn 19 in calender year of the end of the season.

What's the consensus on which 10's to take to the next tournament? There's four good players knocking about so I could see the value of leaving out Byrne out during the 6 nations as he's a more known quantity, and if Healy/Houston/Hawkshaw aren't quite up to then bring him back in. Might upset team cohesion though...

Only way he wouldnt play 6 nations is if playing to a higher level and he wont be doing that i imagine.

Probably right. I’d imagine Hawkshaw will be brought as he could double as a a 10/12. So that leaves Healy and Houston to fiight it out.

Houston could play 12. He is a big boy and can carry hard plus the usual stuff.

It will be interesting to see the selection. Great news for Irish rugby. 4 possible quality 10's.

21-0 to Ulster in the u19’s against Connacht at halftime. Standouts for me are probably David McCann and Ryan O’Neil. They aren’t the biggest backrowers ever, but they’ve carried very well and dominated a few tackles.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,340 ✭✭✭Locke_Lamora

    Ended 33-17

  • Registered Users Posts: 569 ✭✭✭Hands Like Flippers

    How did the 9 look?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,340 ✭✭✭Locke_Lamora

Finlay? Really sharp pass and decent box kick, but he messed up a loop twice with the 10 off the scrum - although I'm not sure if it was the pass or the running line that was off. Looks very small, but he's obviously a good player regardless.

So next weeks 19s games Ulster v Leinster in Newforge, Munster v Connacht in Thomond Park
Leinster 2 wins from 2 so favourites to win title. Ulster and Munster are one win each and level on points difference with Connacht last.

Quite a few friendlies in Prem 1/2 comp over the weekend - not that it means much in the grand scheme of things

    Lansdowne beat Old Wesley
    Clontarf beat Trinity
    Barnhall beat Terenure

Yeah far too early to guess anything about season. Think Munster sides have played some friendlies but nothing in league qualifiers for a few weeks

For sure, but I did hear Clontarf look extremely strong.

Zach Satar CBC came off bench for Tarf seniors in their 31-5 victory over Trinity last thursday. Will be playing for Tarf 20s no doubt. Good backrow player.

Mick Noone ex CBC is captain of Tarf seniors this year as well as ex CBC and Trinity Captain Michael Courtney

what? on the bench for Leinster A?

If that meant a lot then Richard Dunne and Max Kearney would have gotten 20's appearances last season, neither did.

Watters might play 20's but it's hardly a guarantee.

I'd probably agree with most of that. What do you think are the most contested positions? There's a couple more back three players who should be challenging for a starting spot - James McCarthy played u20 last year, then there's Conor Philips, and Liam Turner (if he's not focusing on centre).
