My bad; we didn't play Waterford in the championship this year. I have corrected my post.

Incidentally, I did a bit of research there and looked at the starting line-ups of the 1999 and 2004 Cork senior All-Ireland winning teams. In brackets are the ones who won All-Ireland medals at U-21 grade (as it was called then) or/and minor.

If there are any mistakes there feel free to point them out.

    CORK 1999

    1 Donal Óg Cusack (1997 and 1998 U-21 and 1995 Minor)

    2 Fergal Ryan

    3 Diarmuid O'Sullivan (1997 and 1998 U-21 )

    4 John Browne (1997 U-21)

    5 Wayne Sherlock (1997 and 1998 U-21)

    6 Brian Corcoran

    7 Seán Óg Ó hAilpín (1997 and 1998 U-21 and 1995 Minor)

    8 Mark Landers (c)

    9 Mickey O'Connell (1997 and 1998 U-21 and 1995 Minor)

    10 Timmy McCarthy (1997 and 1998 U-21 and 1995 Minor)

    11 Fergal McCormack

    12 Seanie McGrath

    13 Ben O'Connor

    14 Neil Ronan (1997 and 1998 U-21)

    15 Joe Deane (1997 and 1998 U-21 and 1995 Minor)

Well yes between Cork Kilkenny Waterford Galway Clare and Tipp it's fairly even. You could possibly add Wexford to that as well. It depends on which team, will break out from that group of teams, and eventually knock Limerick off their perch.

    This is a excellent post.

The more you go back on it the more the small little things were all simply wrong.

Hindsight is wonderful but more I think about it the more the game was up before even before a ball was thrown. So disappointing when look back at it.

What makes it disappointing from management point of view is the experience of Kingston, O Sullivan and Cunningham in all Ireland Finals. And yet all the little things that can at least settle a team were so badly thought out before.

It was the recipe for the disaster to come. Would we have won anyway? No, but could of least made it a game.

I think this will set us back. Our time I feel will come but its another 3+ years yet and after Sunday it has a bit more doubt about it now.(which might not be a totally bad thing if it keeps us focused to learn from the mistakes)

Yeah, whoever steers Cork through the next few years really has to find a way to develop a conveyor built of 4-5 U20s going to Senior so that by the time the U17 Wonder team graduate from U20 they'll be ready to light up the Championship.

It would be a terrible terrible mistake to deprive some of them of a crack at U20. Barret and Connolly should not have been poached.. they should have been allowed to experience that success with the players they have been with since U14. I'm sure Limerick were tempted to look at the likes of Finn and Lynch in 2017 but that team were allowed to experience an U20 where they more or less blitzed everyone. It puts the comments about Eddie Brennan at the time into context... he was laughed at for his failure to get a hold of the game but now looking back we know why. This can be Cork's future too if you take your time.

Dublin supporters will perhaps not be surprised given Cunningham's involvement - his view in Dublin seemed to be "just go out and play and no need to think about any tactics or how the opposition will set up"; good coach but not much of a strategist

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 802 ✭✭✭Rebel1977

We have Diarmuid, Cunningham and OGrady is the backroom team all defensive players in their day and yet we produced a shambolic defensive performance made no effort to switch or move players around. Damien Cahalane should been brought on surely he could have man marked Cian lynch as Mark Coleman is not that type of a player. But hats off to Limerick they improved upon every game this year and peaked when it mattered. Roll on the round robin next year. Rebels abu.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,076 ✭✭✭lukin

Damien Cahalane was shown on TV laughing at half-time with the referee and linesman.

If your footballers get their act together they should have as good a chance of landing an All Ireland as the hurlers. Dublin in decline and jury still out on Kerry/Mayo/Tyrone to be serial winners where as Limerick look very good for a few more titles in the next 5 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 802 ✭✭✭Rebel1977

Wow never knew that from what I have seen Jack looks like being the best of the Cahalanes equally good at football and hurling

That's more so trying to get on the good books with Fergal Horgan than anything else. I've been very critical of Damien's performances in the past but one thing that cannot be faulted is his heart and commitment to Cork.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,076 ✭✭✭lukin

It still didn't look good though to be laughing with your team 13 points down in an All-Ireland final.

Regardless of the result last week, I cant wait for new season to start already,

I think this change to U-20 grade can be a big problem for some counties if not managed properly. That extra year to U-21 with your peers really helped alot of lads, you can do alot of developing between the ages of 19 and 20 and if your not good enough to be involved with a senior squad but are overage for U-20 some players can get lost.

To drive forward cork need a serious manager who is allowed to bring in a top notch backroom team, and have a plan to properly integrate the underage talent that might be at the right level. Thats alot easier said than done, Limerick wouldn't be where they are without Paul Kennerick, Caroline Curihid etc. but of course that only works because Kiely recognised he needed them, created an environment for them to do their best work in and kept it fresh.

Its so hard now, when you think about it, most inter county setups are an enterprise of about 60 people, all with their own views, personalities and ambitions. Keeping everyone rowing in the same direction to achieve success is very difficult and thats presuming there is a supportive, non interfering county board backing it all. If there isnt then its 10 times more difficult.

Good start by Cork, 3 points to 2 up at the water break.

Cork are impressive with their blocking and aggression shown.

Our half backs and in particular Hannah Looney are doing very well.

Chloe Sigerson leading the way up front ably assisted by O'Connor, sees us on 10 v 5 up at ht.

1-01 in 2 minutes has helped Kilkenny to be only a point behind at the se ond water break.

    Should be a great finish!

    And what a finish!

Orla Cronin saw red after she swung back with the Hurley- I thought she was pulled down for a penalty first.

We dug deep and Thoroughly Deserved to beat the champions .!

Watched the first half of the minor A Camogie Final

Its Cork 0-4 Kilkenny 1-5 at half time

The ref is one of the worst I have ever seen. Gives Kilkenny a free every few seconds. Cork player got fouled close to goal and he gave a free out. Cork started well but you can see them get deflated with every free given and Kilkenny have grown in confidence. The women's games have some of the worst refs unfortunately. Kilkenny got a very good goal though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,563 ✭✭✭The White Feather

It finished Cork 0-12 Kilkenny 2-12

A very enjoyable game but for the first half refereeing. Second half he seemed to be less whistle happy. Kilkenny took their scores very well and got a great 2nd goal. Corks general play seemed better but the forwards were very poor. Lots of wides and dropped shots. You could see the confidence drain in the first half with all the frees given against them. Kilkenny forwards were very good though when they got the ball. They really need to have better refs in these games.

Breaking: Ronan McCarthy steps down as Cork football manager

They should look to get a new appointment in soon so that he can get a full view of the Cork club championships with a view on next year. Good news for Cork football I think.

Tickets go through the competing clubs with excess sold online AFAIK

DRA give an interim stay on the 3 match ban so Orla Cronin is free to play in All Ireland camogie final for Cork. Been a tough week mentally now, presuming she starts, who misses out? And how does that impact them? Remember whoever it is, she will be prepped for it but tough
