Also just to stress that TrueMotion is *not* a selling point - it’s the feature you turn off immediately as the very first thing you do when you boot up your new TV :pac:

I actually have it set to a VERY low level (I have 3 different sliders for it on my TV and they're all set between 1-3 out of 10). For some reason the Witcher on Netflix looked a little bit juddery in some scenes but that subtly smoothed it out. I'm very senstive to soap opera effect but I found a very very slight amount can be beneficial.

I def wouldn't seek it out though, especially on a cheaper set.

We have two 4K TVs in the house, one cost €1400 and one cost €400. The pricier one is OLED, the cheaper one is LED. They're both HDMI 2.0b so they have broadly the same features on paper but there is absolutely no contest between the picture quality and colours etc on the OLED. I'd take that over a higher framerate any day. The number of games running in full native 4K/120 is going to be quite low for a long time, you're better off planning for the best 4k/60 experience you can get because that's going to affect more of the games you play over the next few years IMO

    Have you any recommendations?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,834 ✭✭✭Captain Flaps

I'm afraid not, I haven't looked at any TVs in this price bracket. It might be worth popping down to your local harvey norman and checking them out in person, it's very hard to recommend something based on spec sheets. I had an idea of a few I was interested in but I ruled them out withing a few seconds of seeing them in person because blacks or viewing angles were horrific etc.

    Hi All,

Just reading through ,the LG BX seems to be quite popular here.
Not a clue what the difference is between OLED and QLED or tvs in general :pac:
But seems the best bang for buck, where would people say it the best place to get it?

    Thanks

Best bet is to wait until April/May for clearance sales. I picked up the B9 OLED last year for €1100 and absolutely love it. I’d say you could get the next step up CX for around that this year and I’d highly recommend.

QLED is just marketing BS for LCD with a layer of quantum dots for increased colour volume. They suffer all the drawbacks of LCDs that are never fully mitigated even by top tier FALD LCDs.

I have the 55" B7 and I'm still regularly blown away by the image, even though I got it in 2018 and it was almost a year on the market at that point. OLED tvs really are an incredible investment. FWIW I believe QLEDs get brighter so are better in bright environments than OLED, but otherwise there's very little to recommend them IMO

Hi all. Looking for a cheapish option, about 27". What would be acceptable for about 300 euros.
I realise I won't get 4K or hdmi 2.1 but for a younger user so don't want to splurge too much.
    Many thanks

Look for a monitor at that size. You should get 4K 60Hz for around €300.

I went for a rummage and 27" TVs seem to be rare, 32 is now the standard 'small' screen.

Off topic but who in their right mind is buying a 'HD Ready' TV in 2020!? 720p only screens were a bad investment in 2007 when the xbox 360 and PS3 were new on the scene, seeing them still available new for a few hundred euro is mind boggling.

    Quick update...

I bought the 49" LG Nanocell86 from Richer Sounds for €730 and it arrived last week. Great TV so far, although in truth I don't have a PS5 yet to try it in, nor do I have another 4K TV to compare it too. But in terms of picture quality it is fantastic for the money and comes with a 120Hz panel and HDMI 2.1. The smaller form factor was a big reason for me choosing this model.

My only small gripe is the poor local dimming. A vertical band of light appears around a bright colour on a black background if you have it set to high or medium. But switching it off removes the issue.

I was ready to take the plunge on a LG CX 48 this week but you are making me have second thoughts! Do you reckon there would be a good saving if I wait a while? Currently going for €1450

I can recommend this monitor I purchased. Keep an eye across Amazon Europe stores - I picked it up for €260 plus an EU plug adapter. One drawback is it lacks speakers but I play with a headset.

LG display is going to output more of the smaller 48" screens. They used to make the 2 48" along with the 2 77" from each sheet, so they only ever had as many 48" as they had 77" so not many. Apparently they only made 220k 48" TVs in 2020. This is why 48" cost so much compared to the 55" especially.

They're going to start a production run now with 8 48" per sheet starting from March and expect to have over 1m 48" displays produced in 2021.

This is all apparently with a focus on gaming at this size, and will help a lot of people who want a smaller size in general.

Nice. Hopefully it'll bring the prices down too. It just doesn't sit well paying more for a 48" screen than a 55"!!

The 48" was cheaper than the 55" at launch but the discounts hit the 55" a lot better due to scale.

For the CX the 55" launched at 2300 while the 48" was 1800, and now the C1 is 2000 & 1650. But there's a few more difference this year for OLEDs.

You won't be disappointed. Wanted this but ended up getting the CX 55 as it was cheaper. It is slightly too big for my room, but in terms of quality, I have been super impressed.

PS5 looks amazing on it and I expect that will improve as more content is released. Movies and TV picture is also excellent as you'd expect.

Nice one! I would have went 55 but it was just that bit too big for the room. Cant wait to give it a go with the PS5 :)

Any burn in issues with LG Oleds from the guys that own them?My Kids never seem to turn off Netflix, consoles so screen could be on for an hour with the same image.

Not so far but I only have mine 2/3 months and it is never on the same image for too long, I would be anal enough when and for how long the same image might be on it!

I got one recently and the screensaver seems to kick in fairly quickly on netflix. Would need to be a bit more careful with the consoles I'd say though.

How big is the room if you don't mind me asking? I was thinking of wall mounting a 55" tv in the spare room but its only 11ft wide and 8ft high.

12ft x 13ft and 8ft high. You get used to the size and it doesn't dominant the room, but I think 48" would have been a better fit.

Mine isn't wall mounted though and I think that would help.

Haven't noticed any issues and have had it a few months. Screensaver comes on quick for Netflix etc.

Need to be careful if gaming though and avoid leaving it on the same screen. I also make sure to turn it off every couple of hours or so if I am gaming a lot that day.

Has anyone hung their CX on the wall? Wondering what wall mount to go for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,553 ✭✭✭✭Varik

    Most current OLED are fine.

When they talk about varying content it's mostly means not have it 24hrs a day on a news or static images.

Only thing that is suggested that people do is make sure you leave the TV in standby and not turn it off fully, the TV run a refresh when in standby and they obviously can't do that when off. Subtitles can be a worry to and having those black with a white shadow rather than the other way which is the norm is better. Not much to worry about anymore.

While LEDs have come a long way and for movies and TV they can do a great job and get a lot brighter than a OLED, one issue with discreet backlights and local dimming is that the TV has to analyse the image to best do it and this is hindered when you've a TV in game mode. If anyone is ever looking at reviews or ratings, there's a big difference between a TV that scores high in HDR for movies and one that scores high in HDR for gaming. OLED don't have this issue so are practically the same in game modes.

Do they come with wall plugs out of curiosity? I bought myself a stud scanner recently, not sure if its any use yet as it didn't come with battery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,620 ✭✭✭Graham_B18C

Yeah it came with big plugs but they'd only work on a solid wall. It recommended drilling a 10mm hole from memory. I used regular rawl plugs and 2" screws for mine. It didn't come with any plasterboard anchors or anything like that. You should try hit a stud with at least 2 of your fixings, then maybe 2 or 4 wall anchors.

Someone above mentioned the grip it fixings, while they're decent enough, they can fail pretty often (the wings don't come out inside the wall). Personally the only plasterboard fixings I'd trust are these:

You wouldn't notice a glitch, and to be honest most games won't run at 4k120fps so it doesn't matter that much if you're playing 4k for everything.

Honestly, having experience with 144fps gaming on a monitor the high frame rate makes a huge difference, as does input lag when you're playing FPS games.

It's not that 1 port is only 120 or the others are 60, the 2 ports that can do 4k@60 are the full bandwidth HDMI 2.0 ports.

You should use those ports in general, or the console/PC/whatever could default to using subsampling.

We're 5 weeks away from April at this stage, is this a good tip? Who has these sales? Are they online or in shops?

Also are you getting a bargain here or good it be reasonably argued that you're simply paying too for older technology?!

    Thanks.

Top end OLEDs improved a lot with the 2021 models, but the mid/high end didn't too much.
Same for LED, top end improved but midrange didn't too much.
Only caveat here is some HDMI 2.1 and other features that some 2020 TV were lacking.

I think April is probably pushing it, the clearance starts earlier in February/January dependant on release schedule and as stock disappears it get's a lot harder to find it and prices do increase.
For current year stuff the price drops start off in June, and then continue slowly until the weeks leading up to black Friday.

Releases are a bit off with covid.

Really depends on which TV you're looking at or what's the price range.

Thanks Varik - My head is spinning a bit form the various options, angles and pricing tiers!!!

What's your best recommendation as of now please?

    - Also, since theres a few people on this thread that really know their TVs - I have 2 X 4k HDR Sony Bravia Android TVs at home.

TV No.1 - Scratched by Child A flinging a plastic stick-shaped toy with a rough edge around. (Have begged for more care and consideration since!)
TV No.2 - Scratched by Child B unplugging a USB cable from a tablet and glancing the metal edge off the screen. (Have moved chargers to other side of room!)

Sonys specs say these are trilumionous screen technology - Just wondering if there's much of a difference in how susceptible the various screens are to damage depending on the manufacturer or particular technology involved?

My older TVs have the odd screen scratch here and there - None of which are visible then when the TV is on - These new ones leave little white backlit dots though and they are horribly distracting in dark scenes as they show quite clearly and your eye is drawn to them.

I'm not expecting miracles here - But if for example OLED screens tended to be even slightly more durable due to the surface they are finished in then that would make my mind up right away.

    Thanks all.

Older LCD have a single light source in the rear and more space between the screen surface and the light, modern ones there's multiple LEDs and they're closer to the screen so can be damaged easier. OLED being self emissive it's the same, they take a bang and either can get dim/bright spots or can go entirely.

None of them are really inherently durable, most now have coatings on the screen so you've to be extra careful in what you use to clean them.

There's giant screen protectors but now sure how good any of those would be and they all look stupid.

I just bought a ps5 but I'm playing it on an old Samsung.
I need to upgrade to a 4k TV. I can only fit a 50 inch tv in my room.

I play mostly single player games and some warzone/COD with friends. I'm reading a lot about 4k 120 FPS/VRR/HDMI 2.1 and it's a bit overwhelming.
There's so many options out there it's hard to narrow down .

    Budget is €1000 or £850.

I would like to buy a TV that is future proof.

    Thanks.

You could get the 49 inch version of the nano86.
They have it on Littlewoods for 650.
It has 120fps on 2 of the 4 ports ie. HDMI 2.1.
You might want to turn off local dimming though as it can cause issues
Maybe others can comment that have it.
