Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Realistically, what measures can gyms put in place? Screens between benches? Socially distanced queues for using equipment? Disinfecting everything before and after using?

Going to be very difficult to implement.

Yeah, no way social distancing can realistically be 100% achieved and I really don't know how they'll manage the logistics of ensuring certain members in at certain times, and tailoring memberships and so on.

Even if they just come up with a loose enough policy of like 30/50 in at a time, there'll be well over 100 people queuing outside a popular Flyefit between 6 and 7pm on a week day evening. Many members actually won't be able to attend outside these times so if they can't access at these times that may lead to many lost members

You could have situations where the limited crowd inside are mainly all looking to do cardio/core work and the weights section ends up being basically empty

In some gyms will they segregate the 'core' area, the cardio area and the weights area (like in Flyefit george's street for example) and have separate memberships for each? The whole thing just sounds like a logistical nightmare no matter what they come up with

I usually go to the gym before work but if they had to limit numbers would you have to book? I'd be raging turning up at 6am only to be turned away as its full.

They will have to roll back some of the restrictions soon enough. They can’t keep the economy shut down forever. I wouldn’t be surprised to see gyms opened at the end of April or early May but with the expectation that social distancing and hygiene protocols will be put in place.

Whether members will be happy to return is the other thing. Some will, but I think it is going to devastate memberships in a lot of gyms

Not at all they look like there gonna stay closed as long as needs be to beat the virus they ve committed now, some businesses are just gonna be casualties of the effort unfortunately.

Alot of people are investing in home equipment aswell, so that ll prob be further loss for gyms when they reopen.

    Order from China

Which site have you used? I'm looking at AliExpress etc but not sure on where else there might be to get it from?

Are you sure they were being serious ? The price of weights have gone through the roof everywhere, can’t you get a few power bands and kettlebells to tide you over ?

It's 30 day delivery from China at the moment, and there's a large shipment due in early June it seems as all the sites are listing that as their restock date.

I was looking at cutting the middle man and found a site in China selling 'Rogue' calibrated plates, but have my doubts over their legitimacy. They'd show up as 'Rouge' plates or something!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,101 ✭✭✭brianblaze

I know what they are, they're made in the US and not made from rubber! Ha. I was making the joke that they were clearly knock offs by saying 'Rouge' plates...

You didn’t mention the part about them being rubber

My bad. I thought the 'Rouge' joke and them being made in China was enough

    My bad.

Anyways moral of the story, they're fake

Your Gym might be open by the time a potential order might arrive!

30 days delivery from China at the moment even with the lockdown. (China to Ireland anyway, not sure about once it gets here!)

That's in 'normal' conditions. An Post are not accepting or receiving post from certain countries at the moment.

Re gyms and clubs, interesting article in the Business Post today (behind a pay wall so can't post). Quotes monthly costs to keep a pool ticking over even when a club is closed as €5-10k.

I had my eyes on August 10th myself to be honest.

I'd love to have a membership to an adult playground that I could lift heavy stuff in....

Wow, I was looking forward to doing classes in my old gym while home for June/July.

To give you an idea of the restrictions that will be in place here in Abu Dhabi. We've not been given a date yet.

    Phase 3, regarding sports:

"Sporting activities and events can resume “behind closed doors”, where arrangements are in place to enable participants to maintain social distancing."

They're shoe-horning themselves into that but gyms are specifically referenced as being included in phase 5.

If it's a cross-fit gym they may be trying to classify themselves as being a "sporting activity".

You could, for small gyms, frame yourself as a small "powerlifting club\ team" and classify every time you go as a training session for team members

Possibly. But the poster mentioned their gym so if it is a gym, then they're chancing their arm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 220 ✭✭Acey10

yes it's a gym. time will tell how they work it. from what I can gather you have a limited amount of time and have to book slots, which is not ideal if you only have a certain time in the day you can go and cant get a slot.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,293 ✭✭✭billybonkers

I don't see why small studios could not open. The type where a trainer works with 1 person only.

Ensure everything is cleaned appropriately after each session, no hanging around in and out job, maintain 2 metres, no changing facilities, windows open

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,123 ✭✭✭✭Gael23

Gyms with open memberships can’t operate under proposed conditions. You can’t charge memberships and then give someone an allotted time to train.
The only way gyms can operates is for classes or 1:1/small group training

Classes/small groups at an allotted time? Is that not the same?

What I mean is the smaller PT studios where you book for a 1 on 1 with a trainer. Why can't they open with distancing and cleaning everything down?

I 100% see this being a real option - and perhaps some commercial gyms maybe even switching to a more PT-based / small group training model with much higher fees. I would say some people would pay it initially at least.

Gym I go to operated like this already, essentially you are booking a rack for an hour and there are a couple of instructors there at all times, it’s quite expensive but I like being able to walk straight in and no waiting for equipment etc. In theory you should be able to maintain social distancing using this model.

The problem of course is that if you give any leeway at all in the sector every business will jump on it whether they can implement it properly or not, and enforcement is impossible. It’s much easier for authorities to leave the blanket closure in place, they won’t want the hassle of drawing up guidelines to allow a small number of gyms to open.

Gyms are never going to fully open in the way they were before. If at all.

Are you willing to touch machines touched by many others and cleaned by a member of gym staff?

Exercising in a closed space means no people will be limited. I don't know how people will wear masks doing cardio etc.

Also changing rooms won't be open.

The fitness industry is going to be very damaged and very different going forward.

Quite extreme, especially if/when there is a vaccine.

Agreed and the fact they have said they can open in phase 5 and sports training can resume early than that. I don't think people will need to wear masks doing cardio sure they aren't even in supermarkets etc at the moment. The mask thing is a bit of a joke, why recommend it now in phase 1 for some instances, two months since this all started also.

Most countries that have mandated it have done so when the country was opening up as opposed to mid-lockdown.

Way over the top. At some point, regular life has to resume. Waiting for a vaccine isn't a realistic timeframe for that to happen.

Id have no issue with being in the gym, using the spin studio or picking up weights. Ill wipe my bike down before and after and wash my hands before I leave like I always have.
Its vitally important to the physical and mental wellbeing of society as a whole.
