Sky's coverage of Indycar today was nothing short of diabolical.

Apart from not covering FP2 because F1 overran , they then missed qualifying because of an unscheduled repeat of F1 !

The Indy car coverage which had been switched to Sky Sports Mix without any communication then didn't record properly with the end being missed because the programme time on the EPG was wrong !!

Hopefully tomorrows coverage is better with a great battle ahead between the Andretti, Ganassi , Penske and Mclaren teams

Delighted to see Rossi get the pole and he deserves it after the close run last week. He finally has a car. It's going to be an insane race though when you look behind him. I mean like Newgarden, Palou, Ericsson, O'Ward and Grosjean is a crazy lineup to have behind you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,044 ✭✭✭Ohmeha

Rossi is something else he is on form hopefully he pulls a win off today to firmly enter the title hunt

NBC commentators yesterday seemed to think personnel changes on his car has sparked him into life again. At the start of the season when I heard Brian Barnhart of all people was going to be his chief strategist I thought that was the last rights for Rossi

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,934 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Unbelievable start to this, not sure we've had two green flag laps out of 11 so far.

    Hertha charging through the field.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,934 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Rossi got screwed in the pits, lost the lead to Newgarden and then Ericsson got ahead of him too but he got by him. He was closing on Newgarden until they ran into backmarkers and lost time again then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,934 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Rossi ends up third, he just has no luck at all.

Newgarden wins it and that means he gets one million dollars to share between a couple of charities which is very nice. I wasn't aware of that before the race. Ericsson finished second.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,044 ✭✭✭Ohmeha

That was another fun race despite Newgarden controlling most it

Palou let his nice guy mask slip off big time with those salty delusional comments about Ericsson when it was a perfectly fair overtake

Good race for Penske and Ganassi , Mclaughlin in control leading home Palou and Power who put in an amazing recovery drive after spinning off on lap one.

Disaster for McLaren with engine issues whole Andretti Honda in absolute disarray with Rossi taking out Grosjean and DeFramcesco and Grosjean taking out Herta.

Herta leading until Andretti missed a pit call....

Some team radio has been released including Grosjean threatening to punch Rossi (twice) , and DeFramcesco race engineer telling him to let Grosjean through because he is being a D##k .

Grosjean started an interview calling Rossi an absolute idiot before the interview was interrupted with Grosjean been called to a team meeting.

It has to be mentioned that Rossi has been very critical of Andretti over recent weeks , his driving today was ridiculous imho

I thought I heard the NBC commentators on Friday or Saturday briefly mentioning something about Rossi and Grosjean not getting along which wouldn't surprise you as both are different types of strong personalities. I didn't see that toxic blow up all across that four car team yesterday they are an underforming mess with Herta's and Rossi's title aspirations almost certainly ending yesterday

Good on Scotty Mac pulling off that commanding win after a ropey recent run he's back in with an outside shout for title again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,934 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Mcloughlin did a great job and I don't think he had the best car but used his push to pass sparingly and had plenty at the end when he needed it. Palou is so consistent, it's like he's a clone of Scott Dixon.

Breaking news, Alex Palou has signed a contract for 2023 with McLaren.

Earlier it had been reported by Ganassi that he had resigned for them !

It's not confirmed if Alex will drive forthem in Indycar - he has a Super licence.

Pretty clear from their press release its the Indycar team.

"Alongside his racing duties next year, Palou will also test with the McLaren F1 Team as part of its 2021 MCL35M F1 car testing program with fellow drivers Pato O’Ward and Colton Herta."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,704 ✭✭✭Infoanon

The initial press release was from McLaren F1 and welcomed Alex to the 'family' and went on to say that decisions on drivers and which formula they would race in would be made at a later date.

Either way McLaren now have a driver that can replace Danny Ric in F1 if they so wished.

Pato O Ward, Alex Rossi and Alex Palou is one heck of a Super team .

Rinus Veekay is the early favourite to go to Chip Ganassi but is not allowed to talk to other teams until August 1st

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,704 ✭✭✭Infoanon

There is increasing talk of Tony Kanann being in the #10 at Toronto this weekend such is the breakdown in Chip Ganassis relationship with Alex Palou.

Wait and see - also no word yet on of #11 will be at Toronto after major issue ie missed payments from Rokit for Tatiana Calderón to continue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,672 ✭✭✭TheChrisD

Well... that was a fun bombshell to drop just after midnight last night. Almost immediately the r/INDYCAR reddit traffic quadrupled over our usual load...

The press release is just as ambiguous as Rosenqvist's was. He could still do an old car test and theoretically join the F1 grid since he has the Super Licence points... Similarly, he could just as easily be shipped off to Formula E. While neither are likely to happen, you can't say it's not theoretically possible.

Tony has debunked that theory already - he will be in Missouri for race 5 of the SRX season this Saturday: https://twitter.com/TonyKanaan/status/1547194250726879234

The #11 car is already confirmed to be off the entry list: https://racer.com/2022/07/11/foyt-parks-no-11-entry-for-toronto-due-to-late-sponsorship-payments/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,704 ✭✭✭Infoanon

As an aside, kudos to Joe Saward who reported Palou to McLaren for '23 joining Pato & Rossi on his F1 blog last week (July 7th) , and stuck to it when contradicted.

    Pity about Foyt & Rokit

Palou move is the top story on Autosport so some good publicity for Indycar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,704 ✭✭✭Infoanon

Confirmation now from Chip Ganassi racing that Alex Palou will continue in the #10 this weekend with all indications that Palou will see out the season with Ganassi.

The possibility of replacing Palou is believed to have been looked at with Tony Kanann and Ryan Hunter Reay top of the list. ( Srx commitments would not have prevented this). Sebastian Bourdais was also an option.

Watch out for a war of words if ,as expected, Zak Brown turns up in Toronto. Chip and Zak disliked each other before the Palou move !

The vague announcement a couple weeks back that Felix Rosenqvist had re-signed for McLaren not specifically Arrow McLaren SP Indycar team makes alot more sense now, clearly Felix was going to be fallback option for the team's 3rd car if there was going to be an issue getting Palou out of Gannasi's option on him for 2023, worse case scenario for Felix he ends up in their Formula E car

Pretty much every time I've seen in sports a dispute over a contract the party who made the initial announcement usually are correct I've no doubt Ganassi has Palou under a contract option for 2023 and Palou/Arrow McLaren are playing whatever hardball they have to to get him out of it with inevitable compensation coming down the line, after all these years everyone should know Chip is no idiot just going to be very difficult to manage one of your two mid-season serious title contenders departing like this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,044 ✭✭✭Ohmeha

Colton is the only serious contender for a McLaren F1 seat, Pato is in the McLaren family until 2025 but has been placed in an Indycar celling and Palou would want to win either/both Indy 500 and championship in 2023 if he has a shot at replacing Ricciardo

Veekay should be a certainty to replace Palou at Ganassi, if it wasn't for this Palou mess I think he would still be with ECR for a one year extension for 2023. If Veekay goes to Ganassi I would think Ferrucci or Ilott would be the two obvious contenders for that seat

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,704 ✭✭✭Infoanon

Colton Herta is the clear favourite for an F1 promotion but Colton is still prone to errors and the 'hooligan ' tag still sticks.

Palou has the all important 'super licence ' and now had the opportunity to fight it out with Colton AND Pato for the McLaren F1 seat in 2024.

Veekay to Ganassi is not as clear cut as first seemed - Illot and other potential F2 refugees maybe in the mix as Veekay may decide to wait a year for a potential opening at Penske (noting Penske could easily add a fourth car in 23 if required ) .

Exciting times on and off track.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,044 ✭✭✭Ohmeha

I'd definitely agree that Colton is not ready right now for driving for McLaren in F1 maybe he will by 2024, he needs to iron out these pattern of errors because everything else with him ticks all McLaren's boxes, all indications from his latest test that he performed really well

I feel for Palou is some respects its clearly an ugly situation for him. He obviously was signed by Ganassi in 2021 on a minimal salary and now he was a better financial offer with F1 test/opportunities with McLaren but is locked with Ganassi's option that has now been exercised because Zak Brown thinks he can avoid paying Chip compensation and doesn't like him. I don't think Palou has the raw electric driving of Colton or Pato but he is the most measured for the three in terms of F1 which could suit McLaren for a solid number 2 to Lando, Colton being a young American driver it's his opportunity to lose for 2024. The only other scenario I can see is that Ricciardo is already gone for 2023 and Palou may be an interim option for McLaren in 2023 with his super license

If Palou does leave for Arrow McLaren in 2023 I just can't see Chip not making make his move for Veekay because Penske, Andretti and Arrow McLaren are not in the window to sign Rinus for 2023 unless Penske pulls out the 4th car again which he has done before. Chip regularly over the years has gone leftfield you couldn't rule out Ilott or an F2 driver but with Dixon not having age on his side Chip needs that fast young foundation driver prepped to take over that lead role in the team which was going to be Palou

  • Site Banned Posts: 12,341 ✭✭✭✭Faugheen

I'm sorry but you can't say Palou needs to win a championship (which he already has) AND the Indy 500 to be in contention, when the error-strewn Colton Herta (for all of his talent) has won neither, but yet is in contention...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 485 ✭✭guyfo

What are you smoking.... The only serious contender is the lad that actually meets the requirements to get on the grid.

In reality Pato needs 4th or higher this and next season to qualify for a seat in 2023 or 2024

Colton has it even tougher, he needs to finish 3rd to qualify for a 2023 licence (looks pretty unlikely at the moment) leaving him on 48 points, but he drops 20 of those before the start of 2024 so would again need to finish in the top 3 next year.

Meanwhile Palou can jump into a F1 car and race next weekend if needed, and will keep those points until the end of 2024....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,541 ✭✭✭✭cj maxx

The cars seem to jump a lot on this track.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,704 ✭✭✭Infoanon

Some great on board camera coverage - the drivers hands are very busy - Rossi looked like he was on the verge of hitting the wall on every corner.

Disasterous qualifying for Pato ,Power and Palou but Scotty and Colton deservedly front row with Malukas best rookie by a mile today.

Some great racing in race one , almost forgot Newgarden was leading such were the overtakes going on in the background - Jimmy Johnson being the star for the first 200 laps despite spinning ! and comfortably leading , he overcooked his tyres on the last restart and fell back which allowed others including Grosjean to move forward.

Race 2 tonight - Newgarden must start favourite; but Power and Veekay should be there , Chevys seemed to have the edge over the Hondas but Ganassi and the Rahal letterman Hondas looked strong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,934 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Newgarden loves the place. I think it was race 2 he won last year and the only race the year before.

Hertha starting third in this one could be a danger and obviously Power from pole. Power will want to make up for a lacklustre performance yesterday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,672 ✭✭✭TheChrisD

That's a nope on the Colton starting third: https://twitter.com/By_NathanBrown/status/1551218094697320449

Engine #5, which is over the yearly limit, so he must take a grid penalty (nine spots on ovals)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,934 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

This is insane, just over a third of the way in and there's only five cars left on the lead lap.

The way it's going there'll be only three cars on the lead lap by halfway.

ROUND 13 — GALLAGHER GRAND PRIX AT IMS ROAD COURSE

uuuuuuuuuugh, we're getting bumped hard by Hungary...

Currently we're set to miss the first hour of the GP because of the F2 Sprint race, and the bumbling buffoon that is Ted Kravitz. Haven't heard yet if it will be on the SSF1 red button; or if they can somehow shuffle the rest of the Sports schedule to squeeze us in somewhere.

    Friday 29th July

    • 2:30pm — INDYCAR Practice {streaming; late join 3pm SS Arena}
    • 6pm — INDYCAR Qualifying {SS Action, or streaming; tape-delay SSF1 8pm}

    Saturday 23rd July

    • 1:15pm — INDYCAR Warmup {streaming only}
    • 5pm — Gallagher Grand Prix {SSF1 Red Button}
      • 5:30pm — Green flag
    • 9pm — Sky Sports F1 tape-delay replay

EDIT: Bad news, the race has now been bumped entirely to the Red Button, with only a tape-delay replay later that night.

Newgarden has had more than a lucky escape after that crash, he's thankfully ok now but after he went back to his motorhome he collapsed, hit his head and was taken to hospital for overnight evaluation now discharged

His condition will be reviewed on Thursday but Ferrucci is on standby to replace him for Saturday's race if he is not cleared. It would be some disaster from that dominant position in Race 2 to then miss the Indy race which would likely kill off his championship ambitions

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,934 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Well if he fell and hit his head then it looks like somebody didn't do their job, he shouldn't have been released to go home.

It'll be a disaster for him if he doesn't make Indy. I hope he does. I really do feel that Will Powers name will be on that trophy though.

Thankfully I have NBC so I'll see the whole race.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,044 ✭✭✭Ohmeha

Ganassi has now filed a lawsuit against Palou, but he is still racing for them this weekend and for the rest of the season... awkward

With Palou 44 points behind Ericsson if he has a bad result this weekend and loses any significant ground it won't be a shock if Ganassi stands him down with Ryan Hunter Reay signed as standby to focus on Ericsson and Dixon for the run-in

Scott McLaughlin was very lucky, a yellow when he was about 500 from his pitstop. He fought his way back up to second but the late yellows gave him very little chance to get past Dixon.

"Crashville" is definitely the most polarising track on the calendar. Too much of track is a disaster in the tight sections, the weather there also a major problem this weekend but location is awesome and it was an entertaining race last night in all the wrong ways. I think Indycar will try to persist with it beyond 2023
