Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Are any of the apps on PS4 worth downloading.

Bit more than the average colour change for limited editions

Think you've covered all your bases there. Maybe Spotify? And PSNow if that's of any interest to you.

Has anyone any recommendations for a HDMI switch that works with the PS4? Ideally it'd have 4 or 5 inputs.....

I got one form Argos years ago, still works perfectly. Don't think any make/model would makew a blind bit of difference to their function.

I picked a Betron one up off of Amazon for about a tenner and had no issues.

Is HDR comparability required, will you use a PC on it where you'd need/want higher refresh rates at 1440+ resolution or want it a bit future proof.

I got an unpowered one with 3 ports in Tesco. Even had a wee remote, One4All brand I think.Ran a ps4 slim, One X and PC on it. Served me well until I upgraded to a 4k monitor in recent times. PS4 will still work if I disable HDR in it's settings but no good for PC and One X in 4k. Reminds me I need to look for one with 4k support to replace it as I hate having to use the input toggle on the monitor.

I'm still having loud fan issues on PS4 Pro(too lazy to try cleaning/moving it yet) but there is a faint clicking noise now when the fan starts getting faster and also when it starts slowing down. Definitely gonna clean it and move it to an open space today. Weird thing, I can get the fans going mad when I open the menu in Trials Rising. Close the menu back to a race and they slow down, very weird.

    Anyone had clicking fans before?

Not even all Sony androids. Had an old Z3 compact for years that could use remote play, then bought a newer Xperia handset but presumably because its not in the flagship tier it can't use it even though it has better specs.

You never use it anyway to be honest, tiny screen and some input lag means the novelty wears off fast.

God bless the ol Hoover! Between that and leaving it rest on top of the TV unit rather than sitting in the shelf, it made a HUGE difference. Didn't even sound like PS4 was running. Tried a game that kills the fans and before, I would have labelled the sound levels low, medium and high, stressing the fans now never got them above low. No more clicking either. Hopefully it stays like that but the Hoover will be brought out sooner next time.

I definitely think positioning is far more important this gen than last. I'm getting the jumbo jet fans myself, even though I have it at least 1ft away from the wall behind it. Even at that, the wall gets hot, so I'm sure the heat is bouncing back to the PS4 causing this. Must test it myself by putting it somewhere else. Have 4 days off next weekend to play World Seeker, so will do a bit of testing around then.

Same as you though, menus cause the fans to go mad, especially map menus. In AC Odyssey, I could be in the middle of a fort causing mayhem, no really loud fans. Go into the map and after a few seconds it takes off. Same if I go back to the main loading screen, fans go mental. Happens in nearly every game with a map, RDR2, GoW, etc.

Pretty sick of seeing 4K attached to the pro, practically none of the games that have patches run at 4K. Its nearly all 1440p mostly.

It does feel like it even struggles at that resolution sometimes. Ultimately i thought the pro was better on my old 1080p TV with supersampling and boost mode than it has been with a newish 4K TV.

The console is underpowered massively for 4K.

It was never pitched as a true 4K console though, even by Sony who expalined how it works. Most people just see 4K and believe it.

The PS4 Pro does checkerboard 4K for most of the time it does 4K at all.
I think onlt 1 game runs at true 4k on it.

You will have to wait till next gen for true 4K gaming, no console on the market is powerful enough to handle it at playable frame rates.

The Pro is mainly for increased frame rates at 1080p and 1440p at 30fps as you rightly say.

I noticed pretty much zero difference between the standard PS4 and the Pro on my 4k TV but then my TV doesn't have HDR.

It doesnt even manage improved framerates all that much either in my experience, same CPU as base PS4 just overclocked. I just find it an underwhelming experience really. I found the benfits it does provide work much better on a 1080p TV.

The 1X does actually manage 4K reasonably well. Its more of a true upgrade over base consoles id say. In saying that i wouldnt buy one,it would be nice to have but theres no Xbox exclusives worth shelling for for me.

Is Dragon Age Inquisition any use?
See its on sale cheap and tempted to try as a fan of older Bioware games

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,282 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

The first Dragon Age didn't click with me at all. But I went back to it about a year after release and absolutely loved it. Thoroughly enjoyed DA2 also. But, I just could not get into Inquisition. I think I played about 25 hours and lost interest. I was tempted to pick it up again myself, pretty sure I saw that and Mass Effect: Andromeda on sale together for cheap (I did, €15.99 for teh 2), and I would possibly give ME:A a go again. One of my mates has DA:I and loves it.

I'm actually looking for an RPG to fill the void left by AC: Odyssey since I finished it. I may pick it up again. The GOTY edition is €7, quite tempting... If you are picking it up, don't forget there are 3 free DLCs (minor things I think, and something to do with MP?!).

I love episodic games like Until Dawn, Detroit: Becoming Human, Life Is Strange. However, due to my fine motor skill issues I find games with QTEs difficult (see Until Dawn and Becoming Human) and are there any similar games to these that haven't any QTEs like the Life Is Strange series?

You could try the likes of What Remains of Edith Finch, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Firewatch, Unfinished Swan, Tacoma and Oxenfree - none of them really has QTE's from what I remember but they're all games I enjoyed to varying degrees -particularly the first four.

A lot of focus on VR.

I'll keep an eye on Concrete Genie.

I'll probably pick up Days Gone at some point but I'm starting to see what people mean when they say Sony third person games look similar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,627 ✭✭✭Gamer Bhoy 89

Yeah so far I'm not very satisfied with what has been shown thus far. Not very impressed by their first episode

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,286 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

I thought the format was grand, but if I was to compare it to the Directs, the VR stuff was basically the 3DS games. Some people may be interested but I think the majority of people want to see games they can play on the PS4 without add ons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,553 ✭✭✭✭Varik

Depends on how much and how expansive it is but Iron Man VR looks good, will at least be interesting.

That State of Play was terrible. They tried to copy Nintendo's Direct formula, but this came across as very clinical and sterile, mostly bland uninteresting VR games. Day's Gone was the only good game they showed, no surprises.

Sony should go back to being themselves, they are far better at doing the big E3 style presentations, rather than a poor Nintendo Direct clone.

Didn't see anything there that was worth the time it took to watch. Still not convinced on the VR stuff. Iron Man looked okay, but not showing 'Actual Game Footage' was a mistake.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,611 ✭✭✭✭ERG89

I enjoyed the more story driven Days Gone trailer but on a whole State of Play just felt a bit fumbled together, for a first time effort it didn't feel like it was noteworthy enough.

Anyway I saw Path of Exiles is out today on PS4.

The people complaining about the VR stuff, do ye have VR? I didn't watch live (I don't watch anything live anymore tbh), but having a look at the few videos the games looked interesting from a VR standpoint. No Mans Sky VR will be amazing, but people are going to brush it off because they're still annoyed the game didn't live up to their expectations on launch (lived up to my expectations and more). Iron Man VR, wonder if it's going to be free movement or on the rails, but looks interesting too.

Concrete Genie seems interesting, will keep an eye on it. No interest in Days Gone, so I will pick that up on sale down the line.

Personally, I don't have it, simply because I was never convinced by it. While I have seen some interesting looking titles, they've been too few and far between for me to adopt VR in it's still birthing phase. I would be quite happy to be proven wrong in my assesment.

Depends on what you want from it. I don't think VR will ever become the only way to play, and yes the games are a bit thin on the ground at the moment, but I think there's plenty already out to justify the cost, AstroBot, Superhot VR, Wipeout (if you can get past the motion sickness), Creed: Rise to Glory, Beat Saber and there's more and more coming every day.

I play maybe an hour or two of VR, game depending, and then back to the normal gaming. For that, it's definitely worth the money. But, the VR on the PS5 will be the one to bring it to mainstream masses, they definitely need new controllers for better movement in game, and the patents above show that's the way it's heading.
