In additional test cricket should have lead to increased ICC funding and this hasn't happened to the level it should have, were still getting half of what Zimbabwe gets according to the CI statement

TBF, I think a lot of that is revisionism. To quote the late Brian Lenihan "We all partied", we all wanted Test Cricket, we all had the optimism to believe Ireland could be a reasonably successful test cricket team. To have a test team that didn't get trounced every time it played, to not lose our best players to England, to have a decent domestic game here etc. Those were and still are the aims.

There's two issues I can see here in terms of future funding.
    1) Government funding. I'm not sure what it is at the level of funding is atm, but could it be more? The participation has increased massively over the last decade or so, has funding increased in line with that? Can the government help us with a national stadium, facilities for the domestic game, or a subsidy to the national team to allow men and women and boys and girls team to tour and play at an elite level?

    2) A European cricket league. We need a strong domestic game. We need this Euro T20 slam to go ahead. We need it to go broader than that. We need to take the 6 teams that were due to play in it and make a 4-day league where they play each other home and away, and then a one day game where they play a 50 over game, as well as the T20 tournament. Sell TV rights to sky, to Australian TV networks, to sub-continent TV networks. Try sell sponsorship deals. At least this way we could organically raise money for the 3 European nations, apart from England, as well as having tournaments where the elite play the elite on a regular basis.

Sorry, it's not revisionism. I never thought test status was a good idea. We were not far enough along in the development of the game here. The finances weren't there and the other formats would suffer. I'd have much rather focused on making the limited overs teams successful so that in 10-15 years, if test cricket was still going, we'd be in a position to be instantly successful. Everything I thought would happen has happened, our ODI and T20i teams have plummeted and no one wants to play us in a test. It was ego and snobbyness from the suits that wanted to be rubbing shoulders with Lords and Ladies at lunch of a Lords test.

The other issue is that the ICC have no interest in spreading the game. If they did they could mandate more tests between the new nations and the established ones and, more importantly, have a fairer share of the monies so that the countries who need the most investment get more money, not the least. Can't see the Indians or English agreeing to that though...

The ICC run the game for 3 countries, that's it. Even among those India effectively call the shots. World cups are now designed to eliminate the chance any upstart knocks out a mega team. If the ICC wanted Ireland, Holland and Scotland are primed for development, but they have no interest because that would cost not make money.

Some good news on two fronts today.

    https://www.cricketeurope.com/DATABASE/ARTICLES2020/articles/000001/000122.shtml?464

The Irish Wolves will head to Namibia for 8 games later this year. With money from the Afganistan test being cancelled the money will be pumped back in to the Wolves. Hopefully another tour happens later in the year too, maybe around the winter. South Africa A might also be involved to make it a triangular series. That'll be great experience for the lads on the cusp of the squad. S Doheny, J Tector, H Tector, D Delany, N Rock, JJ Garth, J Little, T Kane, S Getkate etc. Namibia are no mugs so it'll be a huge experience for the lads.

    Secondly,
    https://www.cricketeurope.com/DATABASE/ARTICLES2020/articles/000001/000116.shtml

Ireland will head to India in March for 3 T20is against Afghanistan. With lots of fixtures in jeopardy there was a big gap, potentially Jan-May roughly, so this will keep the lads ticking over. Hopefully we play a test away to Zimbabwe in April along with a few ODIs and T20is and all of a sudden the fixtures for the year is pretty good with lots of cricket at a high level.

No tests in 2020 as it stands. Zimbabwe one gone now too

Have to say that getting Test status has ultimately been a disaster for Ireland.

The costs of hosting Pakistan were immense and hosting another test at home seems a long way, away. Since Ireland have taken test status, the players have had to choose between county cricket and playing for Ireland and you feel for them as they are now earning less and ultimately playing less.

I had hoped that the ICC would have given us much greater funds to develop the game in the country but that doesn't seem to be the case. Hard to see how the game grows in this country.

Squad announced for Ireland Wolves' tour to Namibia in February.

    T20 Squad*
Gareth Delany, Stephen Doheny, Jonathan Garth, Shane Getkate, Tyrone Kane, Josh Little, Nathan McGuire, Jacob Mulder, Neil Rock, Harry Tector, Stuart Thompson, Lorcan Tucker, Craig Young.

    50-over Squad*
James Cameron-Dow, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Stephen Doheny, Shane Getkate, Tyrone Kane, Josh Little, James McCollum, Neil Rock, Harry Tector, Jack Tector, Gary Wilson, Craig Young.

    * One player is still to be added to the squads.

Lots of young talent there mixed with players on the fringes of the first team who need some game time. Hopefully everyone gets a good amount of playing time over the 8 games. Namibia are no mugs either, this will be a good runout, they're also in the T20 WC later this year.

Alistair campbell interview..,ex captain of Zimbabwe. He would be like many of his era adamant that test cricket is the ultimate but he is damning of it regarding mainly his home side but also towards the newbies.

I recommend it as a read, the players like playing tests, but ultimately with money tight is it's hard to justify spending a bulk of your money on a format which for the lesser lights is the one they are weakest in.

Also what is the long term objective of test cricket for the associates?

They won't be competitive playing a test match now and then,,but obviously financially that is not an option.

Wolves win the second T20 by 23 runs

Doheny 63 not out and Gareth Delany 69 off 36 the top scorers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,314 ✭✭✭BOHtox

Good to have Tector, Doheny and Delany all get scores in the games so far. Three players with scary amounts of potential. Hopefully they keep it up. All cricket to these lads at this stage of their career is absolutely vital for their development.

Ireland make 196/5 in the third t20

Doheny 58, campher 45, Delaney 38 the highest scorers

Namibia made 182/5 today. Ireland 40/2 in the 6th over in reply

103/2 now in the 11th over. Tector currently 63 off 31 balls.

Tector out 91 off 47. Pity he fell just short of the ton.

Ireland 152/3 in the 16th. Delaney on 43no

Seven wicket win in the end with 11 balls to spare. Delaney made 58no

Good 4-1 win away to Namibia for the Wolves. Lots of players really making a case to be included in future Ireland squads or even cement their place. Delany, Doheny, Campher and Tector in particular.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,314 ✭✭✭BOHtox

The One Dayers start tomorrow. Few new lads called up for this. Wonder can Jack Tector and James McCollum push on. If players like Campher, Tector, Doheny and Delany all bat and Little bowls well, then there's first team positions up for grabs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,578 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Ireland 108/6 in the 30th over. Not the best of starts to the 50 over series

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,578 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

228/8 in the end, something of a recovery largely thanks to dockrell (55) and campher (54)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,578 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Ireland bowled out for just 149 in the second 50 over game. This despite a Tector 72.

Well the afgan series starts tomorrow

Hoping to see Doheny get himself a few runs, highly looking forward to this

Balbirnie is seriously getting away with it here. He’s not timing it at all. Go big or go home skipper

    96/1 after 11

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,234 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Lost by 11 runs by DLS, due to rain.

Similar I guess to the West Indies tour in that Stirling and O'Brien got them off to a flyer, but the innings stalled a bit once they got out. It was a pitch that made 200 a par score so defending 172 was always going to be tough. Harry Tector had a lovely cameo at the end.

As for the bowling, Simi Singh was fantastic and was keeping Ireland in the game until Shinwari and Zadran built a partnership which ultimately won the game, albeit with the rain spoiling it.

    Next game Sunday.

So Ireland does not have enough quality pitches (with Clontarf undergoing renovations) that it cannot host all it's "home" fixtures!

This year's T20 series against Bangladesh is therefore relocating to England

    <Pedantry alert>
Technically it's grounds of sufficient standard - cricket grounds have to be rated to hold ODIs/T20Is, and Ireland only has 4. Stormont in Belfast, Bready in the NW, Malahide and Clontarf in Dublin. Malahide costs a fortune to put a match on in, while Tarf is technically too small (it received it's rating before the minimum pitch dimensions were brought in).
