Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Martello Tower Drummanagh Rush

This was taken this week on an outing with Rush Library Camera Group using a torch and the light trails were achieved using wire wool packed into ordinary kitchen whisks which were tied to lengths of wire and 2 lads swinging them. The sparks from the wool gave us the trails of light from behind the tower. It was my first attempt and a good bit of fun.
There are similar photos in our exhibition in Rush Library from Monday 3rd of October. Images from Fingal, inc Rush, Skerries Loughshinny Balbriggan Howth Portrane and various shots from Dublin city. Pop in and take a look.0 -

Was up in Baldungan church on Thursday night as it was nice and clear and I wanted to get a moody moon shot with headstone or a cross in it when suddenly she appeared. !!!!!

Out tricking about with lights this week on North Beach in Rush where there is very little light polution. This is supposed to be a heart!!! With no strings attached

Both of these were done with Fairly lights from Halloween that had a switch and one person hand painted the shapes. Its a bit hit and miss but a good bit of crack. Id say rumours were all over the place the next day about strange lights over at the cliffs0 -

I am sure if anyone was out walking along the Rush to Loughshinny road last night at St Catherines they would have seen some strange goings on in Kenure Graveyard. Well it was just a few from Rush Library Cmera Group who went out to try a few "different" night shots. Cloaks, skulls torchs and a bit of smoke!!!!

Two litttle outings this past week
1) Went to Skerries last Sunday. Like brewers droop it rose briefly but then vanished, the sun that is!!

Not quite the normal picture we post here but over the next few weeks there are a number of Hunter trials on and its a good day out. You can get right up close to the action 3 or 4 feet in some spots. It cost only €5 per car so good value and fresh air

Walked fro Rogerstown back along south beach and the dunes today. Easily passed 150 people out walking. Lovely light and here are 2 images from the walk

Had an hour to spare today so I ended up in Balrothery and headed up to The old workhouse. Eerie feeling yet peaceful. The field has a nice little bed of Daffodils in the corner. In Loving memory??

Dont know if I have ever been in a more spookey place. It was very quiet with only a few crows breaking the silence. It felt cold despite the nice day.
The workhouse was introduced into Ireland as part of the English Paw Law system in 1838. The British government saw the system as the most cost effective way of tackling the desperate state of poverty in Ireland. At that time the population of Ireland was approximately twice the population of today and many of those eight million inhabitants were suffering from disease and starvation.
By 1845, 123 workhouses had been built, formed into a series of districts or Poor Law Unions, each Poor Law Union containing at least one workhouse. The cost of poor relief was met by the payment of rates by owners of land and property in that district. Each union was over seen by a Board of Guardians which consisted of elected members, magistrates and justices of the peace. Conditions of entry into the workhouse were strict and entry was seen as the very last resort of a destitute person.
Once inside the inmates were forced to work, food was poor, and accommodation cold, damp and cramped.
This is a workhouse which was in use up to 1925. It is on the Old Dublin to Belfast Rd between Swords and Balbriggan in the Baroney of Balrothery. In the corner of the field there are a few beds of Daffodis, In loving memory

Changed tack yesterday and headed inland a little. Knew there was some fields of rape seed to be seen from Nags head but ended up in Hollywood Garveyard. So peaceful.

Waiting to pick someone up from train I had a few spare minutes and took this of Balbriggan harbour. Used a N.D filter to get a slow shotter speed to blur the water a little, but not quite enough

This is my favourite picture at the moment. It shows Danny Byrne scoring a goal for St. Maurs in their Div 1 clash with Ballyboden St. Endas in Rush. Danny was on the Dublin team that won All-Ireland U/21 TITLE earlier in the year. Boden would have been red hot favourites win this match but The Parish came good to record a great win. St. Maurs 1..9 Ballyboden 0..2

Last time I saw Skerries lose a game was about 1979/80. Willie Duggan was playing for Lansdowne or Wanderers and Shay McGuinness, Jim Glennon were playing for Skerries. I believe this is Jim Glennons son Joe.
With my record they should pay me to come to games. Anyway HB in case you are snowed in this was a good win for Skerries. 3 good tries and in particular an excellent one from Sherlock the ful back0 -

Jim's son, Joe, is the team captain, but that's not him in the pic. That's Tomas O'Hare. His dad used to be club chairman or president, one or the other. The number 4 is Rick O Mahoney. Not very clear who the other guy is lifting but it is either Joe or Kev McConnell0 -

I cant seem to find the full-size one sorry.
They look like Shorts Sunderlands, first introduced to the RAF in 1938 possibly sheltering from an incoming storm although the weather looks clear enough.
as ireland was effectively maintaining a non involvement state with either the allies or with the UK during the war i would speculate the photo is from 38 or early 39 or else post ww2 as otherwise the sunderlands would've been in camoflage color schemes....
actually i think ive narrowed it down even further!! this photo was most likely taken the very DAY that Britain declared war on Germany!!!THERE’S still a few people around that probably know more about an incident that took place on the very day that Britain declared war on Nazi Germany - September 3, 1939.
It was not a nice day - all round - with heavy rain and wind making life difficult for aircraft. At one stage an RAF twin engined Saunders Roe Lerwick flying boat landed at Dun Laoighaire, only to take off a few hours later.
Up the coast, at Skerries, a four-engined Short Sunderland flying-boat, a pretty big beast they say, landed off the Fingal beautyspot.
I believe Squadron Leader Michael Collins was the pilot and he would have put out his dingy and rowed to shore in the howling storm.
There, local sergeant Pat Glynn would have greeted him and he was escorted to a warm building.
Now, here’s the story. Some reports say the plane that had landed in Dun Laoighaire came to Skerries to render any assistance he could to Collins. It was around then that somebody told the lads they were at war with Germany and, Ireland being neutral, they could have had their planes impounded for the duration of the war.
They quickly left Skerries, again a report stating with a barrel of Guinness in the boot!, and headed home.
So one could say Skerries was invaded by the British Army during WW2 and who could argue!!!!
