Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

As far as I know it’s different content on that compared to the UK site.

I know, what I'm saying is the phone app is smart enough to distinguish between the UK and Irish versions where as the TV app doesn't seem to be.

Are you sure the TV app on the shield doesn't work with Irish version? I'm almost sure it did from what I remember. Maybe I just browsed the titles and didn't actually attempt to play anything.

No because the content is geoblocked so no box will do that without a VPN

A DNS service is a far better choice for region switching when you are using something like a Shield. You can put the DNS info in your router or directly in the shield by disabling DHCP mode in the network settings and switching to a static IP. That menu offers the option of adding a manual DNS.

Has there been any talk of a possible new version being released after Christmas? I've held off buying one this long, I'd hate to finally give in and see a new model a few weeks later.

I highly doubt it. Maybe in 2019.

Strictly speaking a new version came out earlier this year. But in reality it is much the same as the older one (in some ways the older one is better) and the older one gets all the same updates.

No comparison with the new and old controller, new one is really sleek and comfortable, parents have the old one and it feels so clunky compared to it.

The Shield runs the Nvidia Tegra X1 chip, it's not going to be out dated any time soon. It's a very ample quad core Arm CPU with a 256 core GPU. The same chip is in the latest Nintendo Switch console

Do mean remote or game pad?

I use a lovely Logitech Ultimate remote with mine and I don't game on it, so I wouldn't have noticed.

The game pad is much improved.

Ah, fair enough, I don't game on it. I assume you could just buy the new gamepad for the old one and have the same experience. Given that I paid just £99 for mine, even with buying the new pad it would still be cheaper then the current price for the new one!

The point anyway is that I wouldn't be expecting a big update for a few years.

The 2017 Shield uses 6-8 watts in standby / sleep. Legislation says it cannot use more than 0.5 watt in standby. It's a wonder they are allow sell it at all.

What's the power consumption like on the older model?

I wonder is the old Shield really the bargain alert? Where are people getting them, what's the price?

Why do people quote legislation without actually reading it? A quick google brings back this:

Specific requirements for network-connected standby devices were introduced in 2013. Since January 2017 networked standby devices must not consume more than 3 to 12 Watts depending on the product.

Tempting to buy my 3rd one at that price. My 2015 model controller seems unresponsive and the kids need a second one. Makes more sense to buy the full package than £60 for just the gamepad.....

yes you locked in that price and will get it shipped to you once it's back in stock. I might do the same... cheapest it's ever been on Amazon Uk has been £169.99 or €193 at today's exchange rate.
would take the angst out of black friday

Just placed the order (I convinced myself with the post above!).
before you confirm the order it states:

Commandez maintenant et nous vous informerons par e-mail dès que nous aurons une date estimée de livraison pour cet article.

Something along the lines of: order today and we'll inform you by email when we'll have an estimated delivery date.

    Vive la France! ;-)

Cheers again SuckIt for flagging the good bargain

Look on YouTube if you want to see what it does. It does a lot more than what a smart TV does.

Just got set up on my shield from Amazon France last night, great piece of kit.

Even comes with EU and Irish plugs, so don't need an adaptor like I thought I would.

Thanks again for the spot, @Suckit.

Which version of this kit would ye recommend to a chap just to stream stuff on? No games or any of that would be used (for now at least!)

You'd be better off (money wise) with a Xiaomi Mibox. The Shield is top of the line but that's because of the game aspect. The Mibox would handle your streaming needs no problem. The only potential issue is that it doesn't have a built-in ethernet port. If that's not a problem for you, it's a much cheaper way of getting what you're after.
