Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Having some issues with Getflix today, first time in a long time. Try changing your DNS locations, works for me.

Do you mind me asking , with Getflix , is there an app where you can switch DNS locations or do you have to enter location manually , switch to static IP etc ?

I tried Blockr DNS today an totally confused by it - worked out when I manually changed the DNS settings , but it also came with an app which doesn’t seem to do anything

    Really? Worked fine for me.

Though BBC Player was crashing for me on Shield so had to cast it.. will look into it a bit more.

Damn maybe I was a bit hasty .. but yeah tried all three Uk locations and no joy. Their customer service wasn’t great , told me to try an older version of the app . I actually tried that too but no luck . Ps they advised Detroit was best option for USA

Getflix works fine for everything except Netflix for me. Netflix gives proxy error, detects DNS. Any idea?

With a fritzbox (and only setting getflix dns on the shield not the router) I had to to enable static routes on the router to block google and some other public dns.

Same, thought twas me had it a few weeks ago,I'm cursed tried a few ,none worked and when I finally got what looked a decent one, BBC looked for licence details FFS

Is it still impossible to get Netflix to work on the shield with NordVPN, without paying for another service?

It’s not easy is it ! I use Ezpress vpn which expires this week . It works great but it’s pricey

Perhaps I should have been more specific.

Has anyone got the downgrade approach working? i.e. Downgrading the Netflix package to a previous version. I tried it a few months ago, without success.

Are their specific NordVPN servers that are more likely to work. Obfuscation does not seem to be an option with the Android package.

Am I missing some other network configuration/shield setting that will allow my to legitimately watch Netflix behind my NordVPN enabled router? I'm currently split-tunneling on the Shield, but I would prefer to be able to manage everything on my router.

I just set up getflix, and it works fine for Netflix, however for BBC Iplayer everytime I try to play a programme I get a "Something went wrong" error. Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm not sure it's wise to do VPN on your router. Besides the loss of bandwidth you are sending ALL your data through some unknown network. Do it on the device

With Getflix , do you just use their dashboard / app to change DNS locations or do you have to do it manually each time via the Wifi connection settings ?

I bought a VPN router to encrypt all my data, and so the router's CPU takes the brunt of the encryption process.

I don't want to derail the thread, by discussing the potential security/privacy breach implications of trusting an ISP that does capture logs, and doesn't encrypt data in transit, vs. another company that says it doesn't capture logs, and encrypts everything (Dubious). You pick one approach and you hope for the best :o

Question is really just about the possibility to run Netflix with NordVPN on the Shield, without paying for an additional service....I spent some time trying to make it work a while back unsuccessfully.

For Netflix I sometimes toggle off the USA library depending what I want to watch, I have the app on my phone for this

Couldn't get into USA Netflix this morning via Geflix, BBC and Disney were fine though, will give Netflix a go again later, but as you say turning it off is easy via the phone.

Wish I had taken more notice of you lads using geflix sooner, it's much much handier than having to flute about with vpns.

Likewise. Their android TV app is terrible so I just gave up. Used it successfully through a laptop a few years ago but haven't tried since.
I think the advice was to connect through a computer, test the connection to Netflix and then manually search for that server through the app. Completely unusable day to day but might let you see if it works at all.

Changed the batteries in the remote recently and ever since then ithe remove randomly stops working.

I've tried disconnecting / reconnecting the remote but it still intermittently stops working.

Anyone else ever have this issue/know how to resolve it?

I had a problem with that remote once, but Nvidia replaced it tbf, I just bought a new remote a few weeks ago and it's a world away from the old one.

Changing those CR2032 batteries in the 2017 model was like life-or-death..

.. 50% of the time service would resume as normal, and the other 50% of the time would involve pairing, forgetting, restarting etc. Was convinced one time my remote was dead after changing batteries, went back a day later and just started working again.

Horror stories around the Nvidia forums with similar issues.

I've been having a few minor issues with the new remote on my 2017 Shield. Every time I restart the Shield (not often mind, but have done it once or twice in the last month), the remote is unresponsive and need to hold down back/home til backlight flashes (2-3 seconds at most) and it'll be repaired then.

It's a pity they moved away from rechargeable remotes but the new remote is a huge upgrade .

Playing the division 2 in ultra settings on geforce now. Runs lovely but geforce now resets the settings to medium so you have to tweak settings to ultra every time you launch. Man what a game! The graphics are amazing on my 60' TV.

I got the below advice from nvidea support.
It's too early to say that it has fixed the issue but it hasn't reoccurred since.

May help some others here with the same problem.

Please try the below steps and check if that helps.

    1. First, un-pair the remote from the Shield by going to Shield remote and accessories > forget remote.

    2. Then go to Settings > Apps > System applications and clear the data and cache for the applications Android TV remote services and also the Bluetooth service.

    3. Press and hold the back and home buttons on the remote for about 15-20 seconds to reset the device.

    4. Restart the shield device and then try to connect the remote to the device.

After preaching about Getflix for years, I'm having an awful time with it the last week :D

Maybe a massive increase in users because of the discounted deal?

Everything "works" but constant buffering every few mins on iPlayer, Hulu / HBO etc. Internet connection is fine, so it's a problem on their end.

Which DNS locations are people using? I've tried a couple and they all have the same issue, some are better though.

Shagging Brits and their bloody Geo blocking grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

If it was a VPN, yes then it would be the providers fault.
With Smart DNS tho, it's unlikely to due to the provider as your actual traffic isn't being routed over their network it's far more likely to be bandwidth issues at the video provider.

All your Smart DNS is doing is serving a spoofed IP address to the iPlayer/Netflix server.
After that the actual traffic runs over the normal net.

This is the biggest capacity test the internet backhaul has ever faced, bandwidth is far more likely to cause a buffering issue at present than anything else.

    More than likely your isp
Who are you with and have you run a speed test ?
I’m normally on 100mbps but I’ve been dropped to 35mbps in Vodafone but everything via getflix is fine, as banie01 said the idea of smart dns is it doesn’t have the same problems a vpn does because it’s not redirecting traffic

With Siro etc bandwidth shouldn't happen yet any VPN etc I tested it slowed everything down big-time

Yeah vpn slows speed down along with using WiFi
Smart dns and hardwired is the way to go

    On a separate

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,933 ✭✭✭✭banie01

On a separate but kinda connected topic ( noticed my IPTV throttling big-time of late)

Its very much related. Smart DNS won't really cause a drop in speed, but any VPN will.
The service will either connect you to your chosen provider as appearing from your region of choice, or it will throw up a region error.

IPTV, Video providers, Youtube, porn sites are all struggling with their bandwidth as more and more users are trying to log in.

Lots of the IPTV providers particular if wholesaling via panel and remote servers are struggling to keep their bandwidth up to scratch and serve current demand.

Hi- do you know if when changing iP Settings to Static and then the new DNS setting is it supposed to then stay as static ? I have noticed on my Shield that after restart the setting reverts back to DHCP

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,365 ✭✭✭✭McMurphy

I have my settings tweaked so the TV no longer goes off when the shield sleeps which was resulting in the other half tuning into get her TV fix, the shield then going to sleep say ten minutes later and the TV being powered off during her show.

Only, tweaking the setting has changed nothing, it's still doing it.

    Anyone?

It should keep the route/setting you set up as static on your internal network.
I've not encountered any issue with my shields reverting to DHCP.

Set your static address, and be sure to update the wan IP via your getflix (or whichever provider you use) dashboard.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,297 ✭✭✭Gooey Looey

Why do you want a static IP on the Shield? A static local IP on the Shield will not make any difference to a VPN or smart Dns as that's only concerned with the public IP on your router

Edit, just realised you will need to set static IP if you want to do static DNS. Make sure that static IP is either reserved or outside the DHCP pool

Gooey I appreciate the advice but I’ll be honest with you - I have no clue about most of what you just said . I’m really not up to speed on the tech side of this . I just noticed it reverts back to DHCP and I don’t know if the Smart DNS is therefore still active as I changed that under Static settings

On a side note I have just realized their is no App for Getflix on the Shield . Do people just use web access for the dashboard ?

When you pick a static IP for the Shield, you need to pick an address outside the pool of addresses your router is assigning from our else your router could assign it to another device. Either that or you need to reserve it on the router so that the root knows not to give it out.

Tell us what router you got and someone will advise what the standard DHCP pool is on that model so we can advise you on what IP to use that won't be a double up

Just install the app on your phone. As long as it's on the same network as your shield, i.e sharing the same WAN it will update.

If phone is on WiFi and shield is wired it won't matter.
Unless you are subnetting, and let's be honest without meaning to sound like a dick ;) if you what that was you wouldn't be asking how to run a smart DNS.

Ok, the default IP to login to that router is 192.168.8.1. login and look for DHCP in the LAN section, you should see the range the router is giving out from. It will be will be something like 192.168.8.x-192.168.8.y

Most routers allow you to set a static IP based on the MAC address of the device, do it this way that way if you ever decide to bring your box somewhere else or get a new broadband provider you won't wreck your head getting it back online.
