Note: You'll have to take my word that this is one of the Shield's recommended USB drives because they seem to have removed that article :/

Android Central got you covered ;)

nVidia only deleted their article on recommended drives within the last week because I used it to buy this very drive.

    https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4025/kw/How%20to%20Increase%20Your%20Internal%20Storage%20on%20SHIELD%20TV

Links from that article are now dead. I'd always prefer to go with the manufacturer's recommended one over a third party.

What I was saying was Android Central also recommended that same drive, bottom of the list.

I see that an update to Kodi 18.0 is available from the Playstore - has anyone updated this on their Shield and how are they finding it? Worth the update or stick with 17.6?

(We won't go into the add on talk though, as per Post #1).

I've been running the beta and release candidate with the Emby for kodi add-on without any issues but I don't have many other add-ons. That would be the main issue, do the add-ons you use support it yet

Thanks for the heads up re the new kodi.

The problem I have after every major update of either kodi or the shield itself is I have to change the audio sync settings with the little ball that bounces in the setting on the shield, also kodi audio offset and on my soundbar for it to be totally perfect. After the last big shield update it knocked my sync off, I have it nearly perfect again but the remote off my soundbar is out of batteries so can't fine tune it. No doubt after this update I'll have to mess around with the sync again.

I've no idea to be honest, I would presume so. I only use a few and they are loads of similar ones that can be installed to replace them if they don't. Obviously, we can't name any of them here though. I was more interested in how it performs, does it crash, is it stable etc. or if there are problems and I should stay on my current version. Good to hear that it's working fine for you though, fingers crossed that is the popular opinion!

I have never had any problems like that on any device that I used Kodi on, or any release back as far as Kodi 12, so I've no idea what the story is with your set up to be honest! confused.png

I'm using the 2015 version of the shield and had this issue from the very first day. I didn't have a sound bar back when I got the shield either so no complicated setup whatsoever. I set the audio sync with the ball hitting the bar and all my stuff on Kodi was off. Initially I had to set the offset to minus within the kodi audio settings, and now it's ahead after all the updates with kodi and the shield. Once I have the correct sync, I just select 'set as default' and everything is perfect.

I've been using Kodi with the Emby for Kodi add-on as I've the Emby app setup with a restricted kids profile. I don't use Kodi for anything else. Kodi has the best audio and video format support of any player available, it's up there with VLC. Everything in Emby direct plays using Kodi while the same files can direct stream or transcode using the Emby app depending on the format.

I think from a previous post that he bought the Shield with a load of crap pre installed. The crappy add ons are probably busted.

That would make sense, although I have no idea why anyone would buy a device (of any kind) with a lot of crap pre-installed....

@corksfinest: Would you not uninstall Kodi completely, then re-install it fresh and set it up to your own custom needs? It's the only way to do it really...

Agreed, Some of the newer plug ins Seren and 13 Clowns in particular are fantastic!

Yeah, see this a lot. I know a guy who is convinced that when a plug in dies that either his supplier fix it! Or he buys a new box!
Rather than spend a little time learning how to actually use and update what he has.

I had planned to un-install kyrpton last night from the shield and install leia via a fresh install. I sat down to do it and and I must have had auto update on as it was fully updated to leia and its fast as fuk I have to say and didn't creat any audio sync issues for me.

With the previous versions of kodi, when I clicked the exit/off button it would take a few seconds to exit kodi, it's instant now. I find it very snappy, plays all the content instantly from multiple NAS solutions. I don't really use it for addons, just local stuff but to me it seems the fastest release of kodi so far, very nice.

I used to use Kodi a lot a few years ago before I got a Shield but always found it a horrible interface to use. Once set up, particularly for playing local NAS content it did in fairness play everything you could throw at it but like many others once all the dodgy add on's started to fade and once I discovered Plex and dedicated IPTV players I dropped Kodi all together.

I still have playback problems with Plex on my Shield (it randomly fast forwards) so I re-installed Kodi (the latest Leia version) and intend to use it as the client for playing NAS content only and whilst I still find the interface to be clunky it is much faster to open and in particular shut down.

Kodi is pretty much a blank canvas that ships with a skin that has lots of stuff enabled by default showcasing what it can do. If you want a cleaner experience just install a minimalist skin. I'm using the Embruary skin and it pretty much disables everything to make it look just like Emby.

There is a couple of reasons I never went down the plex route. One is my current internet is useless and I have a decent hd library I want to share with family. The second is my 'main pc' these day's is not the best. I built it back in 2011 and it's only an i3 and 8gb of ram so not really suitable for plex.

I'm due the FTTH next week so things will change dramatically for me. I'm currently looking at some nice machines on the dell website. After I get a decent set up, I'll definitely check out plex.

But in regards kodi, back in the day I did use it for it's addons in conjunction with real debrid and I have to say I found it pretty good. But as you said when IPTV became more and more there was 'less' use for kodi. As I said in my previous post, I just don't use the addons anymore as I have a decent local library of media that I just want to watch without issues. But you're dead right, kodi will play anything thrown at it. For me I find it perfect and I'm really happy with it. I will definitely try out plex in the hopefully not so distant future.

Try Emby first, it's far better than Plex these days. Plex are changing their focus from local media to online content providers. Every update brings new stuff the community doesn't have any interest in (podcasts, news, VR and Tidal) or removes support for stuff they use (plugins).

Thanks so much for this post, has completly changed my experience.

Plex is just not for me and I love Emby, but the emby client on the Shield keeps randomly stopping/pausing. It's a known issue affecting some users and the 'fix' it to transcode all media, disabling directplay.

Now to uninstall PLex & Emby client.

Yes I have this issue also but have no issue with Kodi. I've been posting on a thread on the Emby forum about it.

Is anyone else finding a big input lag when playing emulators through kodi 18? Tried some snes games on the Internet Archive ROM Launcher and I found it awful to play. I'm hoping it's just the fact that I didn't tweak anything yet if there's any settings that can be tweaked for better performance

Yeah I've found it terrible and half the games don't load. Lucky I have 30k games from a network drive in Retrox so don't need to bother with it.

Having a few small issues post update to Kodi 18.....some streams are stuttering, others are fine. Have another shield connected to a different TV and the same stream is fine, ditto a fire tv. Quite a few more settings in Leia so expect it's something to do with the refresh rate. Anyone else having issues?
