Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'll believe it when I see it. The NZ rugby media are pretty sensational.

Will the other fanzone's be open to watch matches in other cities?

Yes, like the WRC will refund €11 million worth of tickets on a whim. It will be played. 6 a.m next day maybe, but it would need to catastrophic to just cancel.

It won't be played again. The tournament rules don't allow it.

Schmidt mentioned there could well be torrential rain but say it would want to be pretty bad ro cancel outright. Probably too early to know what weather would be like but hopefully it's just NZ media stirring things..

You are booking too early prices will drop. Use booking .com to hold rooms with no payment up front, then use agoda, priceline, expedia or kayak to get better prices closer to event. I am travelling with my wife and 13yr old son and the price per night is 100.00 on average.

You won't get a room during the Olympics for anything near that. Unless you are staying in some other place over 2 hours away. The Olympics is on a different level to the Rugby.

Anyone know with the JR pass can you just hop on the next train back to Tokyo after the Scotland game or do you need to book a specific train?

Just hop on (apart from the express Shinkansen which you can't use).

yes also if you book a specific train but end up taking a different train for whatever reason you can still use that ticket on other trains but must use the unreserved seats

Given we'll all be over here any of you fancy going for a few pints beforehand? Even if it's just on the day of the match! Like the first game, Ireland v Scotland.

Is there much there from the day before for the nz south Africa game that's not going to it and going to the fan zone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,478 ✭✭✭finbarrk

I'll be there on Friday afternoon. I'm not overly keen on fan zones. Prefer pubs.

I'll be in Yokohama Friday afternoon too. I just thought the Fanzone might have a bigger collection of locals for the Japan v Russia game. If we could find a good sports bar though I'd be up for that!

Has anyone managed to find any pictures of the fan zones? Wondering would they be the best bet to watch Saturday's games

Britt/Irish/Ozzy pubs will show them. Heading down to Yokohama early on Saturday to watch the matches before going to NZ v Sth A match.

Heading out next week - just on the JR rail booking process, is there a handy app seats can be reserved through or must you do it at an actual train station?

We'll be doing something similar alright.

I can't imagine it'll be hard to find them on in the aforementioned venues.

Also, I would say they'll be on in and around the stadium before NZ-SA.

I can't actually believe I'm heading on Thursday!

Morning all, heading over tomorrow, anybody in Tokyo at moment could comment on the weather?
I see on the weather apps it’s in the mid 20’s, i recall form my travels back in the day that sometimes 20’s in Asia can be a bit deceptive and not as warm compared to 20’s at home if you follow me... are we talking shorts and tee shirts folks? Have kids with me so trying to get the clothing right - unfortunately won’t be able to hide in bars from the heat or rain..
Looks like weather is clearing a bit for Sunday’s game.
    Thanks.

Here now. It’s mild and wet. Definitely pack rain jackets. And lots of light layers. Fan zones look alright (if a bit small). Pack shorts and sweatshirts. Maybe a couple of pairs of tracksuits.

On rain jackets, you can get decent light ones in the hundred yen stores.

    Howya.

Yeah went in and got the 7 day there and then at lunchtime.

It cost me €255. It's not much more expensive than some of the online yokes. But handy all the same if you left it last minute like me.

Only arduous task was the stairs to the top floor.

    Wheres An Solas?

Can you just walk in and get one or do you need to send them over any information in advance? Would there be an issue getting on for someone else to do you think?

Also going to go the 7 day option. Makes more sense as I'll be spending a few days in Tokyo at either end. Can't wait!

    jrpass.com

a 7 day ordinary pass is 243 but there is a FedEx fee of 11

so a saving of around €30 with delivery within 2 days

(plus a free eBook on Japan)

Travelling out on my own for the Scotland game as my mate can’t get there in time. Got a wedding at home tomorrow and flight Friday, so will arrive late Saturday night then straight to the game.

Staying in Tokyo but hoping to meet people out there. Where is everyone thinking being before the game on Sunday?

Imagine I will end up in an Irish bar at some point as I’ll want to watch the other games and these seem the best place to do it from what I’ve read. Not too sure on what the fan zones will be like but will check them out as well.

The question asked how much are you paying for the trip now not what do you expect to pay for olympics. Booking a year ahead will involve paying rack rates. I stand by my advice

Can't recommend An Solas enough. I was in there twice last week. Great pub. It's an actual Irish pub in that it's owned by a lad from Tipp (with two other Japanese ladies). Great atmosphere, real mix of locals and tourists and they have geared up for the WC. I'll be heading back when I get back to Tokyo, maybe for the Japan v Ireland game.

yes they are a pass for unlimited travel on certain Japan Rail services

once you are travelling about on trains around the country they become worth it

we are going to the Samoa game in Fukouka and making our way to Tokyo over a week stopping at a couple of cities so it is worth it

if you are just around Tokyo it is not worth it but there is a card for the subway like a leap card that you can get for travelling around metros. you can buy them over there at stations and ticket machines

Nah Yokohama is basically an extension of Tokyo and only a short distance away. does not cost a lot
