Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Katie
Article about suicide in Irish Times.

Violent downs syndrome guy from yesterday.

Dog on restricted list might be taken to the pound.

Children being shouted at at sports.

Should pupils be penalised for not attending religion classes?

A little ditty to celebrate the new thread title

Every time I make a run
Dee she turn around and cry,
    I ax myself why-o-why

    See you must understand, I can’t work a 9 to 5.
So I’ll be gone, til November,

Said I’ll be gone til November I’ll be gone til November,
Yo tell Katie I’ll be gone til November,
Alicante in Summer, Bordeaux in September
I’ll be gone til November I’ll be gone til November
Praise be to Allah I’ll be gone til November
Working class hero on millionaire pay,
I see you cryin’ I get off on dismay,
I'll be gone til November I'll be gone til November
    Any death? How’s your mother?

Is that my coat on the lawn?

I've said this before but I feel the need to say it again.

I do not and never will understand why people draw attention to things they disapprove of.

I would never have bothered with this article but now my curiosity has been stoked.

There's a bizarre contrast between this item on suicide and the one one they did last week where callers were claiming the right to commit suicide.
Are we to judge between those who should have the right to take their own lives and those who shouldn't?

How can you grant someone the right to commit suicide?

It's impossible. Someone can end their own life at anytime and will most likely lt do it alone. That can't be stopped.

Assisted suicide is a different matter entirely.

I'm glad it's not illegal any more.
I mean, I'd be really pissed off if I tried to top mesel' and got arrested for it. Feckin' cheek, when you think of it.

Courage in suicide ?!?!?!? That's what we are listening to on RTE now

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 342 ✭✭daveorourke77

I kind of agree that it takes courage in a sense.

The logic may seem perverse but I know what she's getting at

How is this conversation helping anyone?
I wonder could saying "it takes tremendous courage to take your own life" have ticked a box for someone listening and edged them nearer to the rope or to the river

I agree - thought it was a very dangerous assertion to let go more or less unchallenged by the host.

    To call it out?

It'd be different if this were some Facebook post or a tweet by someone with ten followers, but McGarry wrote this in a national broadsheet.

I don't think suicide is selfish but I can see why someone would say that. However what really got my convinced that McGarry was talking shïte was the insertion of the word "thoughtless". That's worse than selfishness, where you put your needs above others, that's actually not even considering the effect on others, or not thinking of any consequences at all.

That's an obviously stupid statement, a crass generalisation.

What I meant originally was that if it needs to be called out is it worth reading in the first place.

I knew a young lad, 23yo, who committed suicide. When I spoke to his mother the first thing she said was "How could he do this to us?".
    I was disgusted!
