I might have to turn this off.

If I wasn't entirely depressed before this came on, I'll definitely be after it.

How is this conversation helping anyone?
I wonder could saying "it takes tremendous courage to take your own life" have ticked a box for someone listening

I agree - thought it was a very dangerous assertion to let go more or less unchallenged by the host.

    Yes. On Thursday

I do not and never will understand why people draw attention to things they disapprove of.
    To call it out?

It'd be different if this were some Facebook post or a tweet by someone with ten followers, but McGarry wrote this in a national broadsheet.

I don't think suicide is selfish but I can see why someone would say that. However what really got my convinced that McGarry was talking shïte was the insertion of the word "thoughtless". That's worse than selfishness, where you put your needs above others, that's actually not even considering the effect on others, or not thinking of any consequences at all.

That's an obviously stupid statement, a crass generalisation.

I wonder could saying "it takes tremendous courage to take your own life" have ticked a box for someone listening and edged them nearer to the rope or to the river

Is writing an article calling tham thoughtless and selfish going to stop them?

What I meant originally was that if it needs to be called out is it worth reading in the first place.

I knew a young lad, 23yo, who committed suicide. When I spoke to his mother the first thing she said was "How could he do this to us?".
    I was disgusted!

    Ah; this is bollocks.
    I'm off.
I leave the rope to someone else.

This woman clearly hasnt gone through the mental health system.

If it was that simple nobody would die by suicide.

It's like saying if you have cancer then you wont die if you see a cancer specialist.

I wouldn't blame her for the initial anger, it's part of grief, but I'm pretty sure that eventually passed. I hope so. Lifelong anger is a grim pit to fall into.

Lets see how many people bereaved by suicide in their nuclear family will call those people "selfish" and "thoughtless" on today's programme? I imagine most of that brigade, like Catherine, will have very limited experience.

Thankfully ive no direct experience of mental illness but this one hasnt a clue. I dont know how the other caller can keep their calm, sure with the opinion that a walk would cure them what hope do they have in this one's view.
