Anyone get an incompatible version error on the save games today?

Best RPG of all time according to PCGamer.

I've played most of Larian's games and thoroughly enjoyed them and will certainly get around to this eventually. I'm sure it is an excellent game but good lord journalists need to get a grip. Only time (and a lot of it) determines what can be called one of the best games of all time.

You'd have to wait until the end of time to decide what the best games of all time are. 😁

Except Super Metroid, which is unarguably the greatest game of all time.

Is there a demo for this? My CPU is pretty ancient (i5 3570k)

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 9,012 Mod ✭✭✭✭mewso

I agree. Gothic 2 is clearly the greatest game of all time.

Not a fan of turn based, but even my interest is piqued here. Hopefully there's a demo on PS5 and I'll give it a whirl.

I know before release I was very reluctant to pay €60 for the game but after putting in a about 25 hours and still being on the first act, Baldurs Gate 3 is very impressive if you are a fan of the genre... Best game I've played in along time, I'm totally hooked on it at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,403 ✭✭✭✭Vicxas

I love this game, I managed to break into a basement, 5 mins rummage around i reckon. Turns out i found a way into a massive underground section. I've been there for 6 hours.

    10/10

I do have a problem with save scumming tho. Need to try and stop myself

Its saved my ass so many times.

This game is excellent, but the things people have being saying about questlines setting up a spaghetti hell of bugs and broken interactions in act 3 has me putting my playthrough on hiatus for at least a few months I'd say

Just takes me out of it, thinking that doing quests now is going to set up a bedrock of bullcrap that causes the backside to fall out of the end of it later on

    Definitive Edition will be ace.

BG3 coming to Xbox this year after all. They've had to get rid of splitscreen co-op for the Series S which seems to have been what was holding it back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,684 ✭✭✭Glebee

10/10 reviews all round for BG3, still an act 1 after about 30 hours, im never actually going to the city of Baldurs Gate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,187 ✭✭✭McFly85

The correct call in fairness. Split screen co op is nice to have but shouldn’t be at the expense of the whole release.

I wonder if we’ll see more of these parity exceptions as the generation goes on. With BG3 being a massive hit, MS policy on the series S essentially gave Sony a free timed exclusive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,009 ✭✭✭✭titan18

I feel like splitscreen co-op is pretty niche as a feature even now and most people won't use it, so makes sense to scrap it in order to release

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,278 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

100% agree. but it is interesting none the less.

Xbox have previously been fairly strong on parity between X and S, and were strong on that messaging when selling the S. They were clear there would be visual differences - resolution, FPS, Ray Tracing being the tradeoffs for the lower cost entry point. Spencer quoted yesterday (or day before) saying differences between the consoles aren't new, I think in either reaction to this news or to get out ahead of it - and that first party titles have had differences, but he used Ray Tracing as the example. To me, ray tracing and split screen are completely different types of feature. One is gameplay, and it is far harder to accept a gameplay feature difference, given their previous messaging.

Don't get me wrong, I think this is the right call. It would be insane for Xbox to miss out on Baldurs Gate 3 on both consoles cause SplitScreen is proving difficult on the S. If given the choice I would assume 100% of S players would say 'give us the option to play BG3 without split screen rather than not at all', but where do Xbox draw the line now? What are acceptable features to drop?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,226 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah it's unfortunate but somewhat inevitable that disparity in features beyond resolution/framerate are required between the Series S and X. The Series S is a great machine by all accounts, but it was always going to become the bottleneck for this gen, and there have been previous reports of developers not being happy with the Series S and trying to get that uniformity between it and the Series X.

So it does become the question of what do or don't Xbox allow? They seem to have been pushing for that parity in BG3 until the game suddenly became a huge success and they realised they needed to get it out on Xbox as quickly as possible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,187 ✭✭✭McFly85

I think they need to accept that there may be some instances for third party games where there may not be feature parity(I think first party should still strive to offer this).

It looks unlikely that there’ll be a mid-gen refresh from MS, asking devs to develop to 3 different specs seems a bit much. But we will probably see a PS5 pro, so as devs start to develop for increased specs there’s a chance that there’ll be more challenges developing for the S - better to allow features to be excluded than be continually releasing games after the PS5.

Can be a slippery slope. Series S makes up a large enough portion of the xbox playerbase so Microsoft rowing back a lot on feature parity would be a disaster for them I think. I've a Series S and I don't mind lower graphics or maybe niche features like split screen co-op being removed but if larger items started getting dropped for Series S, that would be annoying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,107 ✭✭✭El Gato De Negocios

Where can I preorder this for ps5? None of the usuals seem to have it available and I don't buy games digitally.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 29,724 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

The game is only being released digitally, at least for now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,553 ✭✭✭✭Varik

Time wise I doubt many will play much splitscreen but being able to just drop into a game and join someone on the couch is a great feature for how social D&D is.

However minor this disparity between X & S version is, it's only going to get worse as devs try to get more out of the systems and the likely release of a PRO / X^2 mid gen.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,843 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I very much think this will be an exception. The original was made with PC as the only platform which is very rare these days. Most games will enter development for all hardware so will take into account the S.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 387 ✭✭Iguarantee

I’m about 20 hours in and I think it’s really good.

    I've never played the series.

    The voice acting is excellent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,107 ✭✭✭El Gato De Negocios

    It's available for predownload now.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,213 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

I'm glad i'm planning to wait to dive into this, due to a lack of time. Act 3 seems like it needs a bit of work, which is already happening with the latest patches, and will continue over the next few weeks i'm sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,553 ✭✭✭✭Varik

    Patch 2 out too.

Can play a mp game and then not be stuck with coop players character in your party, can go back to SP and then MP again later. So no negative for starting with a MP game.

I'm not going to play it immediately as there will undoubtedly be bugs but I recently picked up Diablo 4 so will bang away at that for a couple of weeks til a few updates / patches come through.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,107 ✭✭✭El Gato De Negocios

Couldn't resist the early access and played a bit. The combat will take a bit of getting used to and it feels massive scale wise. So far, no bugs or glitches and it looks absolutely stunning. I can see this being a real black hole.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,187 ✭✭✭McFly85

Played a bit this morning, runs pretty well but had to stop because of a bug(screen froze on speech selection so I didn’t know what was happening!), hopefully they can be sorted quick enough.

But I enjoyed what I did play, I can see putting a serious amount of time into it.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 29,724 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

I’d planned to play it on PC but have some friends on PS5 keen to play multiplayer. So settled on that, but was hoping it would translate well.

Thankfully it does. First hour or two of play is very satisfying, and most impressive is that it runs so smoothly. I know the performance issues come later in the game, but seems like a pretty rock solid 60 in the opening stages at least. The controller stuff takes a little bit of time to get used to but I think they’ve largely done a good job translating such a PC-centric game to a controller.

The game itself is wonderfully dense so far - definitely a vast and deep RPG on an entirely different scale to almost everything else out there at the moment. But very early so far - many hours of gameplay ahead before any kind of robust opinion can be formed!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,411 ✭✭✭Icyseanfitz

I play the game solely with controller tbh, I play PC/steam deck, it's very good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,226 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Only got a short burst last night and spent most of my time creating my character, eventually going with a human sorcerer charlatan type of build. So only got one quick fight in.

But considering my party currently includes me, a fighter I met, and a walking talking brain I carved out of someone's skull, I'm enjoying the game so far anyway.

Anyone know how to get rid of the '!' Speech bubble above one of your group. Cannot get it to go away. Tried talking to them, very quest items, etc nothing works.

Game really doesn't hold back from allowing you to get yourself killed. I've died in 2 different conversations by failing a bunch of dice rolls.

Other games a failure might put you at a disadvantage for a fight at worst but nope here's it's death.

Game really needs an easier way to swap out character,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 387 ✭✭Iguarantee

You can manually select whichever character you want before starting the conversation and the conversation is then based on your selected characters strengths and weaknesses.

For example: it’s easier to intimidate someone if you use a barbarian than a wizard.

What’s the issue you’ve encountered with character swapping?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,553 ✭✭✭✭Varik

One of the conversation def didn't allow you to choose, not sure about the other.

Character selection needing to go to camp, talk to someone to remove them, and then go talk to the other person to add.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 29,724 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

Character swapping in terms of switching characters in and out of the party? Going to camp doesn’t seem like such an onerous task… although trying to find out how to actually get to camp in the first place is not best explained in the PS5 version anyway 😂

Absolutely loving the scope of the first act. Kind of a thrill diving into a game with this level of sheer RPG depth. Well let’s just see how it holds up given the reports from PC about act three!

How has the experience been on the PS5? I have it on Steam but the idea of sitting on my couch is quite appealing.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 29,724 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

Mostly excellent so far, with around four hours played. Very solid performance (big step up from FF16 😅), decent controller mapping etc… Had one crash when trying to start the game yesterday, but no issues in-game other than a passing graphical or sound quirk here and there, and a few interface bits that I’m not sure whether are platform specific or not (had to go back and fetch my companions once or twice as they didn’t seem to want to move of their own accord). I have seen some videos suggesting Act 3 has the same performance challenges as have been reported on PC, but so far so (mostly) good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,403 ✭✭✭✭Vicxas

How has the radial been? I played it for a bit on Steam Deck but its a big step up to the PS5. I wish they kinda kept it similar to what Divinity OS II had.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,226 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Personally I'm only about 2 hours in on PS5, but no complaints so far in terms of controls or performance, particularly where combat is turn-based and so you're not trying to cycle through different radial menus trying to find the right icon in a panic. From a video I watched it's definitely a bit more input required to do some simple options (like moving inventory items from one character to another on PC looks like it's just drag and drop, whereas on PS5 you have to highlight the item, open Actions sub-menu, then send to the character you want).I haven't gotten too deep into figuring out the best ways to do things though. There's not a lot of tutorials or hints when you're doing things for the first time, I think there's an actual tutorials menu/log you have to go through yourself.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 29,724 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

Mostly fine! In combat it’s grand since it’s turn-based. Most confusing part was trying to find the radial menu in the map where short rest, camp, quick save etc are located… Fine when you know it’s there, but took an hour or two of play to find out it was there in the first place 😅

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,474 ✭✭✭Niska

Haven't played much on PS5 yet, but keep getting a (known) sound bug. Theres a workaround (turn off 3d sound) until patched.

Played through the prologue three times, trying to find class I like the feel of. Thought it would be Warlock, but didn't click.

Probably try a couple more before getting on with the rest of the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,226 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Speaking of a lack of tutorials, either they left something very important for you to figure out yourself, or I missed the popup saying you have to manually raise your characters levels once they get enough XP. Was really struggling with a fight to the point of having to reload my save a few times (because I knew there was something that had to be wrong), until I discovered I had to manually level the characters up which pretty much doubled their HP and made them stronger. Got through the fight no problem then.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 29,724 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

I don’t think there was a level up tutorial but there is a big exclamation mark on the character portraits when they can level up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,226 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah that was what flagged it for me. But also wasn't sure if that was always there, is it new, what's it for etc.

Not a huge issue, just would have liked maybe a pop-up saying "Hey d*ckhead, look at this! Important sh*t right there!"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,553 ✭✭✭✭Varik

Been selling the same 3 spears to a shifty merchant and stealing them back and then repeating.

Stole a set of gloves that give advantage for sleight of hand first, but they do realize they've been robbed a short bit after and if you're caught you get one of those pop up saves where you don't see the dice. Depending on the area and if it's the thief or not or if your just looking shifty the response is different from being attacked or having to bribe them.

First few times as I'd them in separate group with main party to the side, and when the guard ran up to them since the thief was gone I could answer honestly that I didn't have it.

Now I'm having 3 member party cast stuff on thief and then go to camp, while thief stays behind and once he's done stealing he does a couple of double rouge dashes to get away, you pretty much have to play fully in turn based for a lot of stealth stuff to be safe.
