Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    I agree about the difference in auctioneers and how some can make much harder work of selling stock than others. As for the idea of price manipulation I'm sure it's no more rampant than any other industry and you'll always have a few controlling figures in any market place.

    The manager or auctioneer should have a reasonable understanding of prices but it's still hard to know exactly what the stock are worth atm. I hope I'm wrong but I can see the cattle trade collapsing in the short term, confidence is still at an all time low and beef prices are frankly dismal. The latest pandemic has injected even more uncertainty into the equation and I fail to see how we can have any great positive outcome from everything that's happened so far.

    Is it only dealers who are allowed in to view the cattle, are farmers allowed in also. If they’re not then it’s going to be a waste of time.

    This has been my point from when the first restrictions were imposed prior to the shutdown of marts. Limiting the number of potential buyers was always borderline anti competitive imo and was never going to do anything only drive down the price. Competition is the life of trade and that's in every industry.

    I don't know if the buying process is restricted to dealer's or if other interested parties are given the opportunity to bid. If only dealer's or other agents are present to bid then I can only see one outcome and it's not a positive one. Once you start restricting trade your distorting it and I think we're seeing that currently with live cattle and sheep. I don't see how the proposed solutions I've read will be implemented without massively impacting the livestock trade for the worse.

    Just thinking out loud but I wonder could you see a situation where the people interested in say buying In calf cows go to Mart at an allotted hour and view the Animals.
    The Sellers of said Cattle then Stand 2m apart in a cordoned off area in Mart....prospective buyers then say price they would give for each lot to the seller of said lot across a distance of say 10 metres.
    Would be more transparent than this thing of writing down bids etc.

    I won't say it can't be done but I'm skeptical as too how the process will actually work in the real world. If I'm proven wrong then all the better although I foresee a lot of teething troubles and disappointed buyer's at least at first.

    Was talking to a mart manager yesterday, most potential buyers are very cautious and mostly looking for short keep stock,

    (that's his story anyhow)

    I meant to tune in for a look but got stuck into some fencing and totally forgot. It's hard to judge without seeing the stock but any bullock under 450 kg seemed a good enough trade imo. This is probably due to demand from summer grazers where as the heavier shorter keep cattle are well back from what I see of those prices.

    I commend any mart that's prepared to try and implement a system to work around the current restrictions but I'm dubious as to how well it will work out in the long run. It's not something I'd be interested in and tbh I think that would be the opinion of many of the more regular buyer's.

    Hi Cavanjack, Carnaross would be my local mart and the one thing about Jim Fox who sells the bullocks is he is very fair, takes no messing and everyone know that and respected it. Looking at it on line for a few minutes yesterday it does look very transparent and could do away with auctioneers taking bids from the rafters.
    It will be interesting to see how it will work when normality returns.. You could have a seller in the box bidding on the phone which would undermine confidence in it a bit.

    The lad in the heifers ring now is good.. actually I would say Carnaross is a good enough spot to sell heifers in now.. Devlin used to always be a better mart for heifers but Carnaross is on par with sine the new lad started. Larry is ok but he would take €100 off you in the sucker cow ring in a second...

    He's more of an agent than a dealer imo and is always looking for an opportunity to promote his business (not that's there's anything wrong with that). I know a few lads that have bought stock off him and he has a serious yard and setup. He buys all types of cattle and you can go to the yard and pick out what you want or he'll assemble a bunch for you if you wish. I'm fairly sure he shows you the mart sheet and you pay €30 a head along with with whatever the animal cost but I've never dealt with him although I've collected stock from him for other's. It might suit certain lads that are away working, he seems honest and it's up to you as to what you want to buy off him.

    He's supposed to be a tough nut in the ring according to a few farmers I know that go to Balla. He always seems to have nice even bundles of stock. his setup is based on the crowd in Moate. Bought a few lumps on DD last night and the farmer was giving out about him.

    He could well be as I've said I only know the man to talk to him on occasion. A lot of his stock seem to come out of the Clare/Galway direction. I've no connection to him or his business but he does seem to deal in nice bundles of stock to meet all budget's. By the crowd in Moate I assume you mean Clarehill?     Bought 5 through Mart today. €/kg agreed beforehand and cattle then weighed. Seller dropped em home for me so happy with cattle and the service

    He was bidding against replacement heifers. Your man was probably trying to fill an order and there was no beating him to the animal.

    I'm assuming if he was that fit around the ring it was for an order, I wouldn't fancy trying to sell the like of them again after putting your own expenses on them. I've never been able to find the customers some of those agents seem to have. Give a right good price for stock in the first place, add your commission and haulage and send them on to some other lad who doesn't pass any heed on the final price.

    The few people I get looking for cattle want store's at the price of sucks. There's one lad in particular and I think if you told him you got bullocks for free he'd say someone else would have gotten money to take them.

    HE, LM off dairy. 1.3-1.4/kg
    Average Continentals 1.5/kg
    Quality Conttinental sub 2/kg (unlikely to be that light)

    I had rang my 2 local marts about 10 days ago to say I was in the market for cattle. Auctioneer rang me last Tuesday to say he had a lad looking to sell the 5. One of his own lads had seen them already on farm and said they were good and straight. 4 BBx and a CHx. average weight 532kg x €2/kg. If it was regular mart the blues would be entitled to more. I'm happy.

    If you've customers that don't really know the value of stock and you can just put 30 euros fees on top and show the price on the sheet then you can't lose.

    A friend of mine sold ten yellow Charolais heifers off Limousin and Saler cows, average weight about 380kgs, 12 months old for €950 each out of the yard this week. They were real nice heifers.

    You do not buy. If factory prices drop or remain as is rumoured at a base if 3.3/kgthem a

    FR bullock O- 350 kgs will leave about 1100 euro
    AA/HE Heifer O=/+ 280kgs 945-960ruro
    HE/AA bullock O+ 340kgd DW 1150
    Cont Bullock. R+ 380Kgs DW. 1350 euro
    Continental Bullock U- 450kgs DW 1530. Kepak 20c/kg weight penalty

    That a general idea of what factory prices may look like. Facing into winter take 400-500+ off them prices to get an idea of store prices for cattle ready for finishing. For cattle being over wintered to go back to grass 600+

    I've a good bit bought the last few weeks. DD is my mart. Havent set foot in any mart in 3 years. Trend I'm seeing is the grass is for lambs and this year's calves. Last year's weanlings that weren't sold last back end are more or less in the way, same for lads that sell stores they are all mad to buy younger stock for the grass.

    I can't see many being sold out of yards at them prices all the same. lads will likely hold em rightly or wrongly only time would tell.

    I am not buying at present always buy my stock from mid summer to autumn. If cattle are at 3.8 of a base I will pay more but if present factory prices remain for the summer it will not be pretty in the autumn.

    Lads going into yards have to realise that there is no real idea of market value at present. No marts to see impact of present factory prices on finished stock moving through the mart. You have to judge yourself. I can only point out the way the market looks.

    Generally a 50c/kg drop take about 6-8weejs minimum to happen we have seen it in 30days, price rise of that amount takes 6-12 month's to happen if it happens at all

    Well to be be fair I would not expect for guys to sell light AA for 1.3kg but I will not pay the €2 or €2.30 I am be quoted on DD. Thats another thing why are guys not saying the price on there add. I rang a couple off guys over the last few days that were within a reasonable distance from me all were a bit rich for me. As well as they thinking I am a time waster. If they had the price I would not ring if the price was not in my my budget kinda wasting my time too. Do they want time guys calling. I think I will be holding of buying at this rate. Still in shock from yesterday after been quoted €750 for black white heads bullocks that were suppose to be in or around 350kgs. Keep them for a year at least and try turn a few euros.

    I had an ape in the yard a few weeks ago quoting me €700 a head for 6 over age ,non QA , AAX and FRX bullocks. Told him “I’ll think about it”.
    Took them off to the mart the following week made between €900 to €1050. Heavy Bullocks 615 to 680kg. But very much O and P grade.
