No one has tickets yet. So no one has any to sell. So you're paying for nothing. [We've all paid for them but nothing has been allocated to us yet]

If you plan on going, get your flights and accommodation sorted as these are only gonna get harder to find and more expensive as the days countdown.

Tickets will be pretty easy to come by as we get nearer. Even in our group there seems to be 2 spare QF and a spare Scotland ticket.

So I can't imagine we're the only ones who are in this position.

Relax your cacks and under no circumstances go to a 3rd party site.

Tickets only issued from July afaik. Probably sorting out seating plans once last general sake is over

Exactly. So anyone using touts or tout sites is an eejit.

If you have 2 spare QF tickets I will take them if there no other interested party.

Be aware that you're going to need a transit visa to leave the airport to go into Moscow

+1 Flew Dublin to Beijing via Moscow with Aeroflot this month.
They're absolutely fine. New B777-300 plane, in-flight service good. Same aircraft type used on Tokyo route.
Only complaint, no alcohol served, but there are plenty of watering holes in Moscow airport and I'm told the vodka is good.;)
The Duty Free Transit area is massive.

Skytrax rating for Aeroflot same as Aer Lingus (and Finnair).
Be aware that you're going to need a transit visa to leave the airport to go into Moscow
Fares showing around €610 for my QF dates - with Visas, still under €700.

I understand that's only for certain flights (China / Thailand etc) and doesn't include Tokyo. It better not, because I'm going with Aeroflot too!

I'm also flying through Moscow but a much shorter layover. I presume I won't need any VISA if I'll be hanging around the airport?

That's correct, no Visa needed if you're just international transit.
    Its an impressive airport (Sheremetyevo).

Is anyone staying in Yokohama for weekend of potential Ireland semi-final, 26th and 27th October there? Already staying in Tokyo for qf so was thinking of staying in Yokohama for sfs but accommodation seems very limited and quite expensive. Don't have a huge issue with staying in Tokyo again if it comes to it. Think it's only 1hr 30 mins by train or something anyways..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 498 ✭✭BobbyBobberson

Like yourself we just booked accom in Tokyo for Yokohama games, there was very little around and according to Google maps door to door from stadium to hostel was 55 mins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,201 ✭✭✭troyzer

Managed to get a hotel right next to the stadium for the night of our semi final on the way to greatness.

    Chuffed.

we booked Tokyo for the SF weekend but then I also booked a capsule hotel for the Saturday night in Yokohama in case we ended up at both SFs. it would be better than travelling both days

Stayed in 9 Hours Kyoto capsule hotel previously and it was very cool. And surreal!

Yeah saw one there on booking.com Business Inn or something like that which seemed fine for the price. There's another one which looks a bit better but close to price of hotels so don't think it's worth it. At the end of the day it's a bed for the night so I'm sure capsule would be grand too if it came to it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 498 ✭✭BobbyBobberson

Exactly, its not for the bed you are going there. Cannot wait to get over!

We're looking at doing Disney for a few days between the semi final and final. It's meant to be unreal.

Thats a great shout, might do that too. We went to Universal in Osaka around Halloween and it was unreal. Place was rammed I should add, everyone dressed head to toe in fancy dress and this was only October 20th.

We've both been to Orlando quite a few times and Disney as well but never to Disneyland Tokyo.

We were initially thinking about Universal but it seems to be a copy and paste of the Orlando one whereas apparently the Japanese is privately owned by a Japanese company which licenses the Disney branding.

Apparently it is absolutely mental. A cross between Disney on speed and Takeshi's Castle. Can't wait.

    Yeah.

So our plan is we're getting there late on the Friday before our semi final. We're going to stay in the airport hotel for the night.

    Saturday, all day in Tokyo.

Sunday, most of the day in Tokyo and then head up for the match.

Then we're spending two days in Disney, three days in Kyoto and then back to Tokyo for the final if we can get tickets/Ireland are in it.

Then we're spending a week on the beach in Okinawa.

    I. Can't. ****ing. Wait.

It's about 45 mins train outside Tokyo. I was there last year and would recommend it.
I'd advise buying every express ticket they offer though as lines were crazy.
I was there on a random November Tuesday and average waiting times for pretty much anything were 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 hours.
Also did Universal in Osaka, which i thought was arguably better.

Right finally sorted for Japan although tickets I've got in ballot arent what I'd wanted due to dates I'm there.

Landing 2nd to the 16th possible few day extension but need to extend within 7 days of booking so looking for.

3 X Russia & Samoa with our first knockout.
Will swap 3x for Scotland and Japan and purchase the knockout.

I can be there for the games I have due to work and didn't wanna refuse them in the ballot.

If anyone can help will be eternally grateful.

    Hi All,

I'm heading out to the QF and SF and I'm finding it difficult to get my head around where to stay in Tokyo. Somewhere close to stadium would be great. We'll probably end up booking similar for the SF weekends as it's a short trip to Yokohama.

Can anyone offer any advice on areas which would be best to stay in?

    Thanks

We booked the Tokyo Prince cheap. Had friends stay in it before and said it's fine.

No need to overthink it, Google the different areas of Tokyo , once you've found a place you are interested in, check out booking.com to find something in those areas.
If it was me I would go with Shibuya or Shinjuku. I wouldn't bother getting a place in Yokohama, you can get a train there within an hour.

Anyone else looking at Airbnb? I have a couple of places picked out in Yokohama that are coming out around €30-€60 per night, more towards the lower end if I'll have someone going with me. Shinjuku is a bit more expensive on there but I'm being tempted by its location

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 614 ✭✭✭random_banter

There is a chain called "The B" hotels that seem decent enough, you can get great discounts with reservation on booking.com. It seems there is a minimum standard in Japan where nearly all rooms at all * ratings will be very very clean, if a little cosy. The transport in Tokyo is so good you could nearly stay anywhere.

Have looked at Airbnbs for Tokyo but they seem to be very small for the same price as a small hotel room so have gone with hotels so far. Maybe in some countryside areas we'll look for nice Airbnb's.

Has anyone made any plans for seeing Japan in between games?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,201 ✭✭✭troyzer

The big thing to look out for here is that Japanese double beds are really small, they're only slightly bigger than western singles, just be careful with that. We're looking at twins for the most part just to be safe. Some hotels will make a distinction between small double and double, but not all.

We've rejigged our Japan plans again and dropped Disney and Universal. We're just doing the classic Tokyo-Kyoto-Hiroshima axis with a few days in Okinawa-Ishigaki at the end.

Had an AirBnB in Tokyo before and thought it was great, though I believe AirBnB are under stricter rules now? I would stay in Shinjuku and commute to Yokohama. Train will be a bit of a buzz with other fans too.

In terms of in between matches, not sure yet. I dont have loads of tickets so not overly committed to a schedule. Do people know if there will be fan zones?

I have not been to Hiroshima so I think I will go for that, I also didn't see enough of Tokyo the last time.

They changed the laws around AirBnB so they all had to be registered. But if they're on the website now, it's legit. There was a period there last year where loads of bookings were being cancelled as properties were delisted while undergoing registration.

Sweet, finally got our flights booked yesterday, 18th of September to the 30th so will get the first two group stages.

Wouldn't be able to get any more time off work so will have to see what I can do with my tickets for the 2nd two qualifier matches.

An interesting way of making it over there (cheapest on skyscanner, €690 return) was to fly with Aeroflot and have a layover in Moscow on the way there and back.

There is 4 of us going, from looking at this thread, Airbnb seems to be a decent option. Really looking forward to it.

We booked a place on Airbnb, paid a deposit, the balance is due a few weeks before we arrive. The house has now disappeared off Airbnb. I've been in touch with the host and he assured me that the booking is still fine and there's nothing to worry about but I've been having visions of the 10 of us sleeping in a Tokyo train station!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,720 ✭✭✭✭AdamD

This is why I'd be wary of Airbnb for large events, if your host cancels late on you'll be left in a bad situation probably needing to pay over the odds for alternative accommodation.

This very thing happened me in London for the 2015 RWC. Host only told me it was cancelled the morning I was arriving. I think the reason was they got a better price for the accommodation elsewhere. It was great value for 6 of us when we booked it about 4 months in advance.

I've used AirBnB about 6 times now and that was the only negative experience. in fairness to AirBnB they were very helpful in helping find alternative accommodation and gave us a credit of 10% or 20% on top of our original cost.

Thats decent from AirBnB, we had our AirBnB for NYE in Sydney cancelled too, utter pain in the arse. Never thought to contact AirBnB in the ensuing panic!

AirBnB was always risky for busy events that are booked well in advance. But so are apartments booked through Booking.com. It’s safer to book hotels through Boking.com for big events.

how hot will it be in japan come sept?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 498 ✭✭BobbyBobberson

Well depends where you go as its quite a long country. Sapporo is close to Russia, while Okinawa is on the same line of latitude as Miami!

Was in Japan in Sept/Oct a few years ago, Sapporo was chilly in mid October, northerly winds that would cut you. Main Island with the likes of Tokyo and Osaka were mild with them peaking at 20 degrees.
