    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 13 to 19 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will average 1 to 2 deg above normal, cooling gradually after Monday.

-- Rainfall will average 60 to 90 per cent of normal values, most of this will occur from Tuesday onwards.

-- Sunshine will average between 75 and 100 per cent of normal values, or about 4 to 6 hours a day on average.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will start out rather cloudy with sunshine gradually developing across parts of Munster this morning and spreading into some parts of Connacht and Leinster by early to mid afternoon. Ulster may remain rather cloudy, however. With light winds it may feel a bit muggy, and with any prolonged sunshine it could get as warm as 24 C in some parts of the inland south, but 20 C may be the top reading in cloudier locations.

TONIGHT will have some clear intervals and widespread mist leading to fog patches especially in valleys. Lows 8 to 12 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy to sunny from north to south, and quite warm especially inland from the east and north coasts which will have weak sea breezes cooling shoreline areas. Highs will range from about 19 C in some coastal locations to 25 C further inland and towards the west coast.

MONDAY will be another rather warm day with sunshine at first, some increase in cloud by afternoon, and scattered outbreaks of light rain by evening. Lows near 12 C and highs near 24 C.

TUESDAY will feature passing showers and slight risk of thunder, with lows near 15 C and highs near 22 C.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY will be more unsettled with frequent showers, possibly adding up to 10 or even 15 mm of rain in some areas, and it will become rather breezy from the south to southwest at 30 to 50 km/hr. Lows near 15 C and highs near 19 or 20 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK calls for some improvements briefly around Friday-Saturday then a return to these more unsettled conditions of midweek by Sunday. Highs will remain close to late July normal values of 19 to 22 C.

My local weather on Friday was overcast with brief glimpses of the sun, but it has cleared nicely this evening, giving a good view of Jupiter and the adjacent almost full Moon -- if you have a chance tonight, you'll find the moon very close to Jupiter in the sky, and Saturn off to their left (looking south to southeast around 11 p.m.).

Barry seems to be approaching hurricane intensity and will make a gradual landfall later today into Sunday morning; the main problem continues to be locally heavy rain and storm surge potential, the wind speeds should peak at cat-1 (roughly 80-130 km/hr).

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 14 to 20 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will average 1 to 2 deg above normal, cooling gradually after Monday.

-- Rainfall will average 60 to 90 per cent of normal values, most of this will occur from Tuesday onwards.

-- Sunshine will average between 75 and 100 per cent of normal values, or about 4 to 6 hours a day on average.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly to mostly sunny from north to south, and quite warm especially inland from the east and north coasts which will have weak sea breezes cooling shoreline areas. Highs will range from about 19 C in some coastal locations to 25 C further inland and towards the west coast. The east coast cooling will probably be restricted to first 2-5 kms inland south of Dublin but may extend further inland in Meath, but it should be a very fine day for most anyway. Cloud over parts of Ulster could take a few hours to disperse.

TONIGHT will be generally clear with occasional cloud in the southwest, lows 8 to 12 C.

WEDNESDAY will be more unsettled with frequent showers, possibly adding up to 10 or even 15 mm of rain in some areas, and it will become rather breezy from the south to southwest at 30 to 50 km/hr. Lows near 15 C and highs near 19 or 20 C.

THURSDAY will see a few more showers, less frequent than Wednesday's outbreak, and highs near 18 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK calls for some improvements briefly around Friday-Saturday and now it looks like that could extend well into Sunday before a return to the more unsettled conditions of midweek by Sunday night and Monday. Highs will remain close to late July normal values of 19 to 22 C or possibly a few degrees higher in parts of the south and east.

My local weather on Saturday was partly cloudy and warm with a high near 27 C. Barry has moved inland but rain continues to feed in from the Gulf of Mexico. The remnants will take several days to break up over the lower Mississippi valley.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 15 to 21 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will average 0.5 to 1.5 deg above normal.
-- Rainfall will average near normal values, perhaps a little heavier in south (if Friday system tracks as expected)
-- Sunshine will average a bit below normal after today in particular.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be sunny with increasing cloud by afternoon in western counties, followed by isolated showers there by late afternoon. Warm with highs 20 to 24 C.

TONIGHT will be overcast with a few showers, 2 to 5 mm rainfall potential, lows 12 to 15 C.

TUESDAY will be partly cloudy with showers, highs near 23 C, and winds southwest 30 to 50 km/hr.

WEDNESDAY will be overcast with frequent showers, some heavy, and 10-15 mm rainfall potential. Lows near 12 C and highs near 19 C.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy and cooler with a few showers and moderate westerly breezes, lows near 8 C and highs near 17 C.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast in the north with chance of showers, highs near 18 C, and overcast with outbreaks of rain across the south, highs near 16 C.

OUTLOOK for weekend of 20th-21st is for gradually clearing skies Saturday and some sunshine at times on Sunday, relatively warm again with highs back into the low 20s. The following week is now looking rather warm as well with highs possibly reaching mid 20s.

My local weather on Sunday was partly cloudy to overcast, a few rumbles of thunder mid-afternoon although the heavier storm went south along the international border, and it was about 21 C for a high.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for week of 16 to 22 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will average near normal, perhaps 1.0 above normal in some northern counties.
-- Rainfall will average near normal, to 25% above normal in the south.
-- Sunshine will average about 70 to 90 per cent of normal values, higher in the north central counties.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy with showers, highs near 19 C north to 22 C south, and winds southwest 30 to 50 km/hr.

WEDNESDAY will be overcast with frequent showers, some heavy, and 10-15 mm rainfall potential. Lows near 12 C and highs near 19 C. Winds rather blustery at times, south to southwest 40 to 60 km/hr.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy and cooler with a few showers and moderate westerly breezes, lows near 8 C and highs near 17 C. Showers may be more frequent in Ulster and north Connacht than further south.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast in the north with chance of showers, highs near 18 C, and overcast with outbreaks of rain across the south where as much as 20 mm could fall, highs near 16 C. Light east to northeast breezes in most regions.

OUTLOOK for weekend of 20th-21st is for gradually clearing skies Saturday and some sunshine at times on Sunday, relatively warm again with highs back into the low 20s for the south and east, 17-19 C in west and north. There may be a few showers skirting the north and northwest coastal counties at times. Moderate south to southwest winds could become gusty at times in Ulster and Connacht. The following week is now looking rather warm as well with highs possibly reaching mid 20s.

My local weather on Monday was overcast with a touch of mid-day drizzle but essentially dry conditions, rather humid and around 19 C.

Full moon occurs later today but in Ireland there may be too much cloud to see it very often or at all, but if you do get a break in the cloud cover, you'll see Saturn very close to the full moon and brighter Jupiter off to their right if you're looking south around 11 p.m. to midnight.

SUNDAY will become quite breezy to windy in Ulster and Connacht, winds south to southwest 50 to 80 km/hr by afternoon. Friday, 19 July, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

    TRENDS

-- Temperatures will average 2 to 4 deg above normal. Monday and Tuesday will be warmest.
-- Rainfall will average near normal to perhaps 50% above normal in some western counties.
-- Sunshine will average 75 to 100 per cent of normal, best in the southeast.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will feature some outbreaks of heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms. The track of the first wave of heavy showers will run from west Munster northeast into the midlands and north Leinster by early afternoon, east Ulster by late afternoon. Some places will see 20 to 30 mm of rain from this and gusty southwest to west winds 50 to 80 km/hr will set in near the south coast (but are not likely to make much progress further inland). A second wave will track a bit further north through Connacht into south central Ulster later today and overnight. This one could bring 10 to 20 mm rainfalls. Away from the heavier rainfall areas, some light showers and partly to mostly cloudy skies, warm and humid in the south and east with highs near 21 C, somewhat cooler in Connacht and Ulster with highs about 17 C. Except for the windy south coast, a lot of places may have rather light and variable winds for much of the day.

TONIGHT will see the rain more concentrated in the east before drifting away towards Scotland and the Irish Sea. Some partial clearing will develop in the southwest and later in most of Connacht. Lows near 14 C. It will become rather breezy from west to east overnight, westerly 40 to 60 km/hr at times.

SATURDAY will become partly cloudy and breezy with winds northwest 40 to 60 km/hr. Showers will become isolated before ending completely for the latter part of the day and evening. Highs 17 to 21 C from north to south.

SUNDAY will be warmer and quite humid, with outbreaks of heavy rain possible in Connacht and Ulster by late morning. Winds will be rather strong at times near Atlantic coasts (50 to 70 km/hr) and moderate southerly elsewhere (30 to 50 km/hr). Highs will reach 23 C in some parts of the inland south, midlands and Leinster, aided by some hazy sunshine at times, but 18 C in areas closer to the cloud and rain.

MONDAY will continue very warm and humid with southerly winds, a chance of heavy showers or thunderstorms mainly in western counties, and highs 21 to 26 C.

TUESDAY will also be very warm and humid but with more widespread showers and thunderstorms developing, highs 20 to 24 C.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY look unsettled with a gradual drop in temperatures as fronts move west to east, with further outbreaks of heavy showers at times. Highs will fall back to about 20 C.

The further outlook calls for a reload of the warm, humid pattern for another go round by the following weekend (27th-28th).

My local weather on Thursday was partly cloudy in the morning and sunny by afternoon with brisk northwest winds at times, highs about 19 degrees. Severe heat is spreading east from the plains states where it was near 40 C in places.

-- Sunshine will average 75 to 100 per cent of normal, best in the southeast.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will become partly cloudy and breezy with winds northwest 40 to 60 km/hr. Showers will become isolated before ending completely for the latter part of the day and evening. Highs 17 to 21 C from north to south.

TONIGHT will see increasing cloud with some outbreaks of rain in northwestern counties, otherwise dry, and quite mild with lows 11 to 14 C.

There may be a more widespread interval of thundery rain at least reaching central counties late in the afternoon and early evening.

MONDAY will continue very warm and humid with southerly winds, a chance of heavy showers or thunderstorms mainly in western counties, although this may stay just offshore, with lows 15 to 18 C and highs 21 to 26 C.

TUESDAY will also be very warm and humid but with more widespread showers and thunderstorms developing, lows 15 to 18 C and highs 20 to 24 C.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY look unsettled with a gradual drop in temperatures as fronts move west to east, with further outbreaks of heavy showers at times. Highs will fall back to about 20 C. There could be some locally heavy rainfalls in the western counties and parts of the north, especially Donegal, Mayo, west Galway and Kerry.

The further outlook continues to change and now looks less likely to return to warm, humid conditions, rather staying partly cloudy to overcast and near normal in temperatures through the weekend of 27th-28th, with some showers at times.

My local weather on Friday was partly to mostly cloudy with one brief shower around mid-afternoon. The high was about 19 C. We are now expecting some warmer and sunny weather for a few days and could reach 30 C by mid-week here.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 21 to 27 July

-- Temperatures will average 2 to 4 deg above normal. Monday and Tuesday will be warmest.
-- Rainfall will average 25 to 50 per cent above normal. Wednesday and Thursday will be the wettest days.
-- Sunshine will average 75 to 100 per cent of normal, best in the southeast.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be rather warm and quite humid, with outbreaks of heavy rain possible in Connacht and Ulster by later this morning. Rain will continue there with brief breaks until late tonight. Less frequent outbreaks of rain will extend to other regions during the day. Amounts will range from about 15 mm in parts of the north and west, to 5 mm in the southeast. Winds will be rather strong at times near Atlantic coasts (50 to 70 km/hr) and moderate southerly elsewhere (30 to 50 km/hr). Highs will reach 23 C in some parts of the inland south, midlands and Leinster, aided by some brighter intervals, possibly even some hazy sunshine at times, but temperatures will be steady 16 to 18 C in areas receiving the steady rain. There may be a some intervals of thundery rain by afternoon and evening.

TONIGHT will be warm and humid, with the last of any rain in the north gradually ending, lows 15 to 18 C, winds south to southwest 40 to 60 km/hr.

MONDAY will continue very warm and humid with southerly winds, a slight chance of heavy showers or thunderstorms mainly in western counties, although this may stay just offshore or near outer headlands on the Atlantic coast, with highs 21 to 26 C.

TUESDAY will also be very warm and humid but with more widespread showers and thunderstorms developing in western counties late in the day, lows 15 to 18 C and highs 20 to 25 C. Moderate to strong southerly winds will continue especially near coasts.

WEDNESDAY will have some morning showers or thunderstorms, following by partial clearing, and sunny breaks by afternoon, with moderate south to southwest winds, lows 13 to 16 C and highs 19 to 23 C.

THURSDAY will bring spells of heavy rain and risk of thunderstorms, 20 to 40 mm rain could fall, with temperatures steady around 17 C.

FRIDAY will see the rain tapering off to showers followed by partly cloudy skies and fresher, less humid conditions, lows near 10 C and highs near 17 C.

OUTLOOK for next weekend and the following few days calls for a gradual warming trend and it could return to the mid 20s briefly around the last two days of the month.

My local weather on Saturday was partly cloudy with brief showers, rather cool with highs around 18 C. Severe heat and humidity hit the larger cities of the eastern U.S. and southern Ontario, highs were well into the 30s with very high humidex readings 40 to 45 C. There were a few heavy storms here and there in this hot air mass bringing some relief at least temporarily.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 22 to 28 July

-- Temperatures will average 2 to 4 deg above normal, but the first three days will produce most of the warmth, it will be near normal after mid-week.
-- Rainfall will average 25 to 50 per cent above normal, much of this will fall on Thursday.
-- Sunshine will average 60 to 80 per cent of normal values, possibly near normal in parts of the southeast, cloudier in Connacht and Ulster.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be very warm and humid with blustery south to southwest winds 50 to 80 km/hr near some coasts, 30 to 50 km/hr inland. Highs will reach 24 or 25 C away from south and west coasts which will have some persistent low cloud and perhaps drizzle, temperatures about 19 or 20 C.

TONIGHT will be muggy and partly cloudy with lows only falling to 17 C on average.

TUESDAY will be partly cloudy, very warm and humid with highs 24 or 25 C, except closer to 20 C near south coast. Some showers may brush parts of the west coast and start to move further inland by evening.

WEDNESDAY will see some morning showers followed by sunny intervals, still quite warm with lows near 16 C and highs of about 22 or 23 C, winds not quite as blustery but moderate south to southwest at times. Rainfalls of about 5 mm likely.

THURSDAY will see frequent showers, some heavy with thunder possible, and 20-40 mm rainfalls, temperatures steady 17 to 19 C.

FRIDAY will bring gradual clearing with rain tapering to showers in the north during the morning, then isolated scattered showers later on in more of a westerly wind 40 to 60 km/hr, lows near 12 C and highs near 17 C.

SATURDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers and highs near 19 C.

SUNDAY and MONDAY will continue the trend of near normal temperatures and isolated showers.

My local weather was sunny start to finish with highs near 28 C. Severe heat and humidity (DC was 37 C, felt like 45 C, NYC and BOS about the same) continued in the eastern U.S. followed by widespread gusty thunderstorms, but a more organized area of heavy rainfall will move from current location in Missouri towards the Ohio valley and then the mid-Atlantic states in the next two days, bringing some flash flooding and ending the heat wave for the time being.

    Tuesday, 23 July, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 23 to 29 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will average 1.5 to 3.5 deg above normal, with a gradual cooling trend from very warm at first to near normal by end.
-- Rainfall will average near normal, from 50% above in some parts of west, to about half normal values on the east coast.
-- Sunshine will average 50 to 75 per cent of normal.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be very warm and humid with some hazy sunshine at times, more frequent cloud cover near south and west coasts, and highs generally around 25 C except closer to 20 near south coast, 22 west coast. Winds southerly 40 to 60 km/hr, backing to southeast by late in the day.

TONIGHT will see a band of showers making some progress east from the Atlantic coastal counties to at least central Ulster and the midlands, but amounts rather light in general. Very warm and muggy for most with lows around 17 C.

WEDNESDAY will bring some sunny breaks after the remnants of overnight showers move east, and it will continue quite warm at about 23 or 24 C.

THURSDAY will be wet in some western counties with 15-30 mm rainfall expected, some thundery showers embedded. This band of rain may stall before reaching the east coast, or at least make such slow progress as to delay its arrival until evening. Thus temperatures will vary from about 17 C in the west to 22 C in the east after another quite warm and muggy night.

FRIDAY will see the front speeding up but fragmenting to showers, followed by partial clearing and highs near 19 C.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK calls for near normal temperatures and scattered showers, highs near 20 C.

My local weather on Monday was partly cloudy and rather warm (25 C) with some weak shower and thunderstorm activity mostly aloft with the rain not reaching the ground very often. This is the opening stages of what looks like a severe storm outbreak mostly north of here and spreading east, but we may get into the action at times on Tuesday. Heat was replaced by heavy rainfalls in many parts of the eastern U.S. on Monday.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 24 to 30 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will average about 2 degrees above normal, but close to normal after the first two days which will continue rather warm.
-- Rainfall will average near normal in many areas, but possibly as low as 50% of normal in coastal Leinster.
-- Sunshine will average 60 to 80 per cent of normal values.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will become sunny with cloudy intervals, with any isolated showers very brief, most places staying dry. Warm with highs near 23 C.

TONIGHT will become cloudy again with rain slowly pushing inland from the western coasts, about 5 mm by morning in those counties bordering the Atlantic, but largely dry further east, lows near 15 C.

THURSDAY will be cloudy with outbreaks of rain, slowly spreading east although possibly only scattered showers in Leinster and parts of Ulster. Amounts will be close to 10 mm in Kerry, some parts of Galway and Mayo, but less than that in central counties. Still rather warm with highs close to 20 C.

FRIDAY will become fresher with westerly winds of 40 to 60 km/hr at times, passing showers and chance of an isolated thunderstorm. Lows will be 10 to 13 C and highs 17 to 19 C.

SATURDAY will also be partly cloudy with showers and moderate westerly winds at times, lows near 9 C and highs near 17 C.

SUNDAY will become partly sunny and showers will be quite isolated, highs near 20 C.

MONDAY to WEDNESDAY of next week, a rather weak disturbance will approach with scattered showers, and this will persist for several days as low pressure loops around off the west coast, but with that, some dry intervals and sunny breaks too. Highs generally 19 to 22 C.

My local weather on Tuesday was sunny and hot with a high close to 30 C. Thunderstorms have developed just to our south and we're getting frequent thunder and flashes of lightning but no rain yet.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 25 to 31 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will average about 0.5 degrees above normal.
-- Rainfall will average near normal in many areas, but possibly as low as 50% of normal in coastal Leinster and east Ulster.
-- Sunshine will average 60 to 80 per cent of normal values.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be cloudy with outbreaks of rain, slowly spreading east although only scattered showers will reach Leinster and parts of Ulster by afternoon. Further amounts will be 5 to 10 mm in Kerry, some parts of Galway and Mayo, but less than that in central counties. Still rather warm with highs close to 20 C and possibly 23 to 25 C in Leinster.

TONIGHT will remain cloudy with some rain at times, lows near 12 C.

FRIDAY will become fresher with westerly winds of 40 to 60 km/hr at times, passing showers and chance of an isolated thunderstorm. Highs will range from 17 to 21 C.

SATURDAY will also be partly cloudy with showers and moderate westerly winds at times, lows near 9 C and highs near 17 C.

SUNDAY will become partly sunny and showers will be quite isolated, highs near 20 C.

MONDAY will bring outbreaks of rain with highs near 19 C.

The outlook for the rest of the week is rather unsettled with temperatures close to seasonal averages.

My local weather started off with a heavy thunderstorm, then it cleared up before mid-day and was quite a bit cooler than the previous days with a high of about 18 C. Severe storms moved east into Alberta and Saskatchewan.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 26 July to 1 August 2019

-- Temperatures will average near normal to perhaps 1.0 deg above normal in the north.
-- Rainfall will average 50 to 75 per cent of normal.
-- Sunshine will average near normal and may be as much as 25% above normal in the north.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers, and a slight risk of a thunderstorm in west central counties. Highs 18 to 22 C, warmer in the east and inland south.

TONIGHT will be clear at times with cooler temperatures, lows 8 to 11 C.

SATURDAY will be partly cloudy with some fairly long sunny intervals, only a few isolated showers, highs near 20 C.

SUNDAY will also be a mixture of cloud and sunshine with slight risk of showers, but watching a more active system that could back into east Ulster and north Leinster from Britain where rain will be fairly heavy in places. This system may or may not spread some rain into the northeast but more likely just cloud. Highs 18 to 20 C.

MONDAY is now looking fairly settled as low pressure formerly shown in the vicinity of west Munster is being held on a more southerly track by the after-effects of the system over Britain on Sunday. So it may now be a generally dry day with highs near 20 C, the rain will go towards northwest France and southwest England instead.

TUESDAY will see variable cloud and isolated showers, highs near 22 C.

OUTLOOK beyond that is rather bland with continued near normal temperatures and mixtures of cloud and sun each day, just a few scattered showers but nothing too prolonged or widespread shown on current guidance.

Just a word about the incredible heat in parts of England and France yesterday, that will be ending today if you have any travel plans and conditions will be much more temperate by the weekend.

My local weather on Thursday was sunny but pleasantly cool with highs about 21 C.

    Saturday, 27 July, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 27 July to 2 August, 2019

-- Temperatures will average just slightly above normal, 0.5 to 1.5 deg in most areas, which suggests daytime readings in the low 20s.
-- Rainfall will average just about normal although a fair amount of that is timed for the last day of the interval, so rather dry until then.
-- Sunshine will average near normal to 25% above normal values. The northwest will do relatively well being furthest from projected tracks of any cloud systems.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be sunny with afternoon cloudy intervals, and isolated showers mostly over west-central counties. Highs 20 to 23 C.

TONIGHT will have clear intervals except for widespread cloud in east Ulster and north Leinster. Lows 7 to 10 C.

SUNDAY will remain cloudy in east Ulster and north Leinster, with small amounts of rain likely towards Antrim, but most other parts of Ireland will be partly cloudy to sunny at times, with only a few isolated brief showers. Highs 20 to 23 C.

MONDAY will see patchy cloud spreading in as a fairly vigorous low (for midsummer at least) tracks south of Munster towards southwest England. Some rain may develop in the south towards late afternoon or evening. Lows near 8 C and highs near 21 C.

TUESDAY could produce some light rain at times especially in Leinster and east Munster, with a better chance of sunshine in Connacht and Ulster. Highs near 19 C.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY look dry and reasonably warm with highs 21 to 24 C.

FRIDAY could produce some rain from the guidance this far in advance, and highs near 19 C.

The pattern in August appears rather unsettled with near normal temperatures. I have somewhat low confidence in the guidance past midweek however.

My local weather on Friday stayed sunny but turned quite hot with the high 32 C. Looks as though we are finally getting into the normal hot, dry interval that occurs most years here in late July and most of August, sometimes longer than that.

    Sunday, 28 July, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 28 July to 3 August, 2019

-- Temperatures will average near normal to about 1 deg above normal values.
-- Rainfall will be somewhat below average except in east Ulster which will get significant amounts today, so overall about 50% above normal.
-- Sunshine will average as much as 25% above normal in western counties, to near normal further east, although probably below average for east Ulster.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be rather cloudy in general with sunny intervals most likely near south coast and parts of the midlands. It will remain overcast in Ulster, north Leinster and parts of Connacht with rain spreading slowly west across Ulster. Some heavy amounts are possible around Belfast and county Antrim. Elsewhere, isolated showers are possible within cloud bands further south, but many places will remain dry. Highs 18 to 23 C depending on sunshine, although 15 to 17 C in the persistent rain further north.

TONIGHT will maintain this pattern with some clear intervals in the south but persistent cloud and some light rain further north. Lows will be around 10 to 12 C.

MONDAY will bring variable cloud cover and showers in some parts, winds gradually increasing from east to northeast in parts of the south closer to a vigorous offshore low heading for the Channel. Further north, the rain in Ulster will fragment to showers, but this will merge with a wider area of unsettled weather with showers over about half the country by afternoon in hit or miss showers. Highs 18 to 21 C.

TUESDAY will be rather cloudy with some sunny breaks in western counties, and showers with risk of a thunderstorm in eastern counties. It will be somewhat cooler in the east. Highs will range from 21 C in western counties to 17 C in the east.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY have a rather uncertain outlook at present, as the deep low passing southern and then eastern counties may stall over the North Sea or eastern Britain for a time, and allow some cloud and shower bands to spread back west. However this is not certain and there could be enough influence from high pressure west of Ireland to keep at least western counties dry with some sunny intervals. Temperatures are likely to peak around 20 C but could be a bit warmer than that if sunshine prevails.

The outlook beyond that is increasingly uncertain but it appears likely to remain close to normal in temperatures with weak disturbances passing often enough to add a risk of showers most days.

My local weather on Saturday was partly cloudy and rather breezy with highs near 28 C.

    Monday, 29 July, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 29 July to 4 August, 2019

-- Temperatures will average near normal values, within 0.5 deg either side.
-- Rainfall will vary from 75% of normal in the northwest to 125% of normal in the southeast.
-- Sunshine will be fairly close to average values although rather cloudy for the first two days.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will have some sunny intervals this morning despite rather widespread cloud, as the persistent rain in north Ulster continues to weaken. Isolated showers are possible further south, but it will remain generally dry until late afternoon when some rain moves in from the south coast, associated with unusually deep low pressure over the Bay of Biscay. Winds will pick up gradually from the northeast in Munster and south Leinster, at least in exposed coastal locations. Highs 17 to 21 C.

TONIGHT the rain will spread further north, although rather showery with slight chance of thunderstorms embedded. Parts of the west and north will remain dry but cloudy. Lows 10 to 13 C. Rainfalls 5-10 mm inland southeast as the low tracks towards Cornwall bringing strong wind gusts to parts of northwest France and southwest England late tonight.

TUESDAY will continue showery in Leinster and east Ulster, possibly parts of Munster and Connacht adjacent to those regions also. There is a better chance of sunny intervals near the western coasts. Moderate northerly winds will develop as the low tracks through England where some locally heavy rains may develop. In eastern Ireland 15 to 25 mm rain could fall during the day. It will be rather cool as a result of the cloud and rain, highs near 16 C east, but closer to 21 C near the west coast and in parts of Ulster.

WEDNESDAY will probably see the effects of the low confined to Britain but some spillover into eastern counties is possible at times. Otherwise most places should have a dry day with a mixture of cloud and sunshine, highs near 21 C.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy with morning lows 5 to 8 C in the inland west, 8 to 11 C in other locations, and highs 20 to 23 C.

The outlook beyond that is for rather bland weather to continue with temperatures quite close to average, possibly dropping down a few degrees by middle of the following week, then returning to normal values after that. At the moment the guidance is generally rather dry for Ireland but as confidence is rather low in the solutions, this is far from guaranteed at this point.

My local weather on Sunday was sunny and warm with highs near 27 C.

    Tuesday, 30 July, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 30 July to 5 August, 2019

-- Temperatures will average near normal to perhaps 1 deg above normal.
-- Rainfall will average 50% of normal in west, to 125% in parts of Leinster, although after today generally about 50% in all areas.
-- Sunshine will average near normal values to 25% above normal.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will bring widespread showers with some locally heavy and possibly thundery, 5 to 15 mm likely. A few parts of the northwest coast may escape with partly cloudy skies. Highs will be in the range of 17 to 19 C.

TONIGHT will see the showers continuing but becoming mostly confined to Leinster and east Ulster, lows near 12 C.

WEDNESDAY will become partly cloudy with longer sunny intervals in the west, and just isolated showers except in a few parts of east Ulster and coastal Leinster. Highs 18 to 22 C warmer in the west.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy with decent sunny intervals for most, lows near 8 C and highs near 23 C.

FRIDAY will be sunny with increasing cloud, isolated showers by evening in west. Lows near 8 C and highs near 23 C.

SATURDAY will bring showers (about 5 mm rain expected) and highs near 20 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with showers and highs near 19 C.

The outlook for the following week is for somewhat cooler weather especially mid-week as winds turn northerly for a spell, but it will then return to more average early August values towards the end of next week.

My local weather on Monday was sunny and hot with highs near 30 C.

The unusual low pressure area tracking towards south coast of England brought wind gusts as high as 100 km/hr to Brittany on Monday and there are widespread gusts to 70 km/hr in the Channel region now. The low is about to move inland near Dorset and will weaken steadily over land today.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 31 July to 6 August, 2019

-- Temperatures will be near normal to 1.0 deg above normal.
-- Rainfall will be fairly light in the east until near the end of the seven day interval, but will gradually surpass normal values in the west.
-- Sunshine will average near normal to 25% above normal.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly to mostly cloudy this morning, becoming more sunny by afternoon in the west at least. Isolated light showers will bring scattered trace to 2 mm amounts but quite a few places should be dry in general. Highs 17 to 20 C. Moderate northwest winds 30 to 50 km/hr.

TONIGHT will become clear with a few cloudy intervals, a good night for stargazing as we are at the new moon (so no light from the Moon to interfere). Have a look for Jupiter low in the south, very bright. Lows 8 to 12 C.

THURSDAY will be sunny with cloudy intervals and a little warmer, highs 20 to 23 C.

FRIDAY will have sunshine to start with increasing cloud, lows 8 to 11 C and highs 20 to 23 C.

SATURDAY will become rather unsettled with frequent showers in the west, mostly cloudy with more isolated showers in the east. Lows will be about 10 C and highs about 19 C.

SUNDAY will be cloudy with a few showers, and highs near 19 C.

MONDAY and TUESDAY could bring some rather heavy rain at times, stay tuned on the details but potential for 20-40 mm rainfalls especially in Munster and Connacht. Guidance remains rather unsettled through the first half of August, but temperatures should be generally near the August average.

My local weather has finally gone into a persistent hot, dry pattern which we expect here for a few weeks at least. High today was around 30 in the hills and 35 in valleys. It's a dry heat here though, very little humidity. A bit hazy due to wildfire smoke blowing in from west and southwest of here (mostly in Washington state).

-- Rainfall will be 50% above normal in the west, but near normal or possibly a bit below normal in the east.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be sunny with increasing cloud by afternoon in parts of the west and north, isolated showers will be possible there. Highs generally around 23 C but could be a bit warmer in some inland areas.

TONIGHT will become overcast with showers more widespread in western counties, lows near 13 C.

TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY will continue unsettled and it will be somewhat cooler by mid-week.

The outlook is for a warming trend to develop later in the week, followed by more outbreaks of rain by about the weekend of 10th-11th.

-- Temperatures will be near normal values overall, cooler around mid-week.
-- Rainfall will be 25 to 75 per cent above normal, heaviest in southeast.
-- Sunshine will be about half to two-thirds of normal values although quite cloudy until near end of interval then better sunshine.

    FORECASTS

TODAY ... Frequent showers and risk of a thunderstorm in the south, less widespread further north but unlikely to stay dry anywhere, with just a few brighter intervals, rather warm and humid, highs 19 to 21 C.

TONIGHT ... Cloudy, showers, lows near 13 C.

SUNDAY ... Some sunny breaks in the morning followed by increasing cloud and outbreaks of showery rain, highs near 19 C.

MONDAY ... Variable cloud, showers and chance of a thunderstorm, lows near 13 C and highs near 19 C.

TUESDAY ... Cloudy, showers, cooler, lows near 10 C and highs near 17 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for week of 4 to 10 August, 2019

-- Temperatures will average near normal to about 1 deg above normal.
-- Rainfall will average 25 to 50 per cent above normal.
-- Sunshine will average only 50 to 75 per cent of normal.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will start out with some sunny intervals but cloud will be increasing from the west during the morning, leading to outbreaks of heavy thundery showers mainly west of the Shannon and in parts of west Munster, but eventually spreading somewhat further east. Some places could receive 15-25 mm of rain within a short period leading to some spot flooding. Highs will be 18 to 21 C.

TONIGHT will continue cloudy with showers, lows near 12 C.

MONDAY will have variable cloudiness and outbreaks of rain also with slight chance of thunder, highs 18 to 21 C.

TUESDAY will continue much the same with partly cloudy to overcast skies, showers and highs near 19 C.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY will be slightly cooler but still unsettled with showers mostly in the afternoon hours, highs near 17 C.

The outlook is somewhat uncertain as to timing but a heavy rainfall seems likely around Friday or Saturday, with unusually strong low pressure for this time of year tracking near the south coast by end of the week or start of the following weekend. This unsettled pattern may begin to improve past mid-August with faint signs that the Azores high is going to strengthen later in the month placing high pressure closer to western Europe.

My local weather on Saturday was sunny but hazy, and warm with highs near 27 C.

TONIGHT will become partly cloudy with showers ending, lows near 12 C.

TUESDAY will see a similar cycle of morning dry intervals and afternoon showers, highs near 21 C.

WEDNESDAY will be partly cloudy with a few showers and slightly cooler with lows near 10 C and highs near 19 C.

FRIDAY will bring outbreaks of heavy and possibly thundery rain with warm, humid conditions and highs near 21 C.

SATURDAY is then expected to become rather windy with partly cloudy skies and passing showers, highs near 18 C.

SUNDAY will be cloudy with a few showers and highs near 18 C.

The outlook remains unsettled for the week following, then slight improvements later in August.

-- Temperatures will average near normal to 1.0 deg above normal.
-- Rainfall will average 150 to 200 per cent of normal (the value is rising because now Tuesday 13th in the week, another heavy rain expected)
-- Sunshine will average 50 to 75 per cent of normal, although near normal in some parts of the south.

    FORECASTS

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 8 to 14 August 2019

-- Temperatures will average near normal to 1.0 deg above normal.
-- Rainfall will average 150 to 300 per cent of normal with parts of the southeast and east Ulster most likely to see the highest amounts.
-- Sunshine will average 50 to 75 per cent of normal, although near normal in some parts of the south.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will start out sunny or at least bright with increasing high cloud thickening by afternoon, and rather light winds most of the day, but becoming strong and gusty by evening ahead of a rainfall overnight, with southeast winds reaching 40 to 60 km/hr by evening. Highs 19 to 22 C warmest inland west.

TONIGHT, outbreaks of heavy and in places thundery rain will spread steadily north, with 20 to 40 mm possible, accompanied by moderate southeasterly winds of 40 to 60 km/hr. Lows will be 14 to 16 C.

FRIDAY will be warm and humid with heavy showers and possible thunderstorms moving rapidly north in the early morning hours, followed by partly cloudy to overcast skies and further showers, possibly heavy in a few places. Further rainfalls of 10-30 mm in total, with some gusty southerly winds at times near south and east coasts mainly. Highs near 21 C in most counties, closer to 18 C in the northwest.

SATURDAY will be cloudy with a few breaks, and rather windy, with southwest to west winds of 50 to 80 km/hr near exposed Atlantic and south coasts by afternoon. Lows near 15 C and highs near 20 C. There will be further outbreaks of rain in the north-central counties mainly, and 10-15 mm additional rainfalls.

    Friday, 9 August, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 9 to 15 August, 2019

-- Temperatures will average near normal values to perhaps 1.0 deg above normal.
-- Now that 20-40 mm rain fell overnight, the rest of this seven day interval will have near normal additional amounts of rainfall.
-- Sunshine will average only about 50 to 75 per cent of normal.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be cloudy with a few brighter intervals, warm and humid for most, with moderate southerly winds, and an outbreak of showers and thunderstorms by mid-day into the afternoon. Last night's heavy rain is now over parts of Ulster and will continue to die out there later this morning, but a few parts of the northwest will have on and off light rain most of the day with winds remaining more northeasterly due to the low pressure area tracking to their south. Highs for most will be about 21 or 22 C but held down to 17 C in parts of the north and northwest. Further rainfalls of about 10-15 mm are possible.

TONIGHT will be mainly overcast with outbreaks of light rain or drizzle, and lows near 12 C.

SATURDAY will see further rain or at least intermittent showers in central and northern regions, more of a partly cloudy scenario further south with occasionally strong westerly winds developing near the south coast, turning to northwest gales at times on the Atlantic west coast. Temperatures will vary from near 20 C in the south to 15 C in the north, but will generally fall off in the afternoon and evening.

SUNDAY will be breezy and cooler with a few showers, and highs near 17 C.

MONDAY will have variable amounts of cloud and some rather heavy showers especially in Munster and the midlands. Highs near 18 C.

TUESDAY, the disturbance that had been expected to hit Ireland may now track further south, reducing rain and wind potential, but this change is not certain yet, so it could return to the forecast. At this point the day looks partly cloudy with isolated showers and highs near 17.

The further outlook has also improved slightly as more distant events look a little less significant, although it continues to look rather unsettled at times and with temperatures oscillating on either side of mid-August average values of 18 to 20 C.

My local weather continued sunny and hot on Thursday, with highs near 35 C. It has clouded over this evening and while Friday is expected to remain very warm, thunderstorms are going to develop eventually and cool us down to the mid-20s on the weekend. As I don't have air conditioning, that's a good thing.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 14 to 20 August, 2019

-- Temperatures will average near or slightly below normal.
-- Rainfall will average near normal values.
-- Sunshine will average 50 to 75 per cent of normal.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will brighten to occasional sunny spells for part of the late morning and early afternoon before more showers develop with a weak front drifting through later this afternoon, rather warm and humid with highs 19 to 22 C.

TONIGHT will be cloudy with a few breaks, occasional light showers and lows near 10 C.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers, moderate west backing to southwest breezes, and highs 18 to 21 C.

FRIDAY will bring more frequent showers or intervals of rain, 5 to 15 mm expected, lows near 12 C and highs near 18 C.

SATURDAY will be breezy with showers, mostly cloudy skies, and highs near 18 C.

SUNDAY will be mostly cloudy also with intervals of light rain, highs near 17 C.

MONDAY will bring some gradual clearing by afternoon and highs near 18 C.

The middle of next week looks a bit better now with some chance of warmer temperatures briefly, and more sunshine than has been the general trend recently. However, the models only give about three days of improved weather before it's possibly back to this rather autumnal cloudy and somewhat unsettled theme. No doubt there's some glorious weather over the horizon in September though.

My local weather on Tuesday was mostly sunny with a few cloudy intervals, and the highs were about 23 C. Full moon was rising at sunset, the exact time on that is 1330h Thursday 15th (or 1230h UTC) so the moon will appear full tonight and the following night, nice to see but poorly timed for viewing the annual Perseids meteor shower which is near peak (going back out around midnight in the hopes of seeing one or two).

    Thursday, 15 August, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 15 to 21 August 2019

-- Temperatures will be rather cool with a warming trend after Tuesday, the average will be about 1 deg below normal.
-- Rainfall will be near normal but most of that will fall in the first four days of the interval.
-- Sunshine will begin to improve next week so the seven days may average close to normal but it will be cloudy to about Monday.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will have a mixture of cloud and sunshine with moderate westerly breezes backing to southwest and increasing this evening. Isolated showers today will be followed by rain by evening. Highs near 20 C.

TONIGHT will be wet and windy with 5 to 15 mm of rain and south to southwest winds 50 to 80 km/hr. Lows 12 to 14 C.

FRIDAY will see a brief clearance of the morning rain then variable cloud and blustery westerly winds with showers, some with hail and thunder, and highs 15 to 18 C.

SATURDAY will be windy and cool with intervals of light rain, winds westerly 50 to 80 km/hr, and highs near 16 C.

SUNDAY will also be breezy and cool with showers, winds west to northwest 40 to 60 km/hr, and highs near 16 C.

MONDAY will see slight improvements to partly cloudy skies, more isolated showers, and less breezy, with highs near 17 C.

TUESDAY will bring further improvement to partly sunny skies and highs near 20 C.

The outlook for later next week is promising with warmer temperatures and sunshine likely for several days, and now the models are holding out some hope that this warm, dry spell could extend at least partially beyond the end of the week. Highs could reach 25 C especially inland from the west and south coasts which are likely to be closer to 20 C.

My local weather was sunny most of the day on Wednesday with a passing shower off to our north at mid-afternoon, staying dry here, with a high of 24 C. Perfectly clear outside now, hoping to catch the end of the Perseids despite a bright full moon.

    Friday, 16 August, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for week of 16 to 22 August, 2019

-- Temperatures will average about 1 deg below normal, but closer to 3 deg below normal at times this weekend, warming to slightly above normal at times mid to late next week.
-- Rainfall will average near normal values (now that heavier rain has just about ended today).
-- Sunshine will continue to be somewhat below average but this could begin to improve around mid-week.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will see some partial clearing in strong and blustery west winds, but more showers are likely to develop after that and move inland from the west coast by mid-day and afternoon, winds westerly 50 to 80 km/hr in exposed locations, and highs about 18 to 21 C.

TONIGHT will continue breezy to windy at times with occasional light rain and lows near 10 C.

SATURDAY and SUNDAY will both be windy and unseasonably cool, highs only 15 to 17 C, frequent showers and gusty winds west to northwest 50 to 80 km/hr and possibly higher around Donegal Bay and Galway Bay at times (to 100 km/hr). Some places well inland and near the south coast may get a few sunny breaks and times when the strong winds abate briefly, so it won't be bleak all the time but then at other times pelting showers with hail and thunder are quite likely. Overnight lows will be around 10 to 12 C, so not much range in temperatures due to the windy conditions.

MONDAY will see some improvement mainly due to a decrease in wind speeds, the cool and showery themes will remain and highs will reach about 17 C.

NEXT WEEK has a somewhat uncertain outlook, most guidance suggests gradual improvement with a bit more sunshine and less frequent showers going forward until at some point high pressure seems likely to get close enough to Ireland to change the regime altogether to a dry, sunny and reasonably warm spell, but timing that is a bit uncertain, it seems more likely to be late next week or into the following weekend but could even be delayed a day or two beyond that, depending on how quickly this pattern change actually develops. However on some time scale the current unsettled and windy theme will be replaced by almost the exact opposite type of weather and it's possible that this could settle in for more than just a few days. For now, I would suggest Tuesday and probably Wednesday will continue rather cloudy with occasional showers and moderate westerly breezes, highs near 20 C, then Thursday and Friday could see a bit more improvement to partly or even mostly sunny skies, isolated showers and highs in the low 20s. Eventually there could be some days later in the month with highs into the mid 20s.

My local weather on Thursday was rather cloudy but dry, and the high was about 22 C.

    Saturday, 17 August, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 17 to 23 August 2019

-- Temperatures will average near normal, but the first half of the interval will be about 2 deg below normal, then later 2-4 deg above.
-- Rainfall will average 75 to 125 per cent of normal, with the higher amounts more likely to be in the west and north.
-- Sunshine will begin to recover later in the period and overall it may reach normal values, but certainly a rather cloudy start.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will see a steady increase in cloud and shower activity with some rather heavy and thundery showers by afternoon and spells of steady rain by evening. It will be quite breezy in south and east, to windy in north and west where southwest to west winds of 50 to 80 km/hr and local gusts to 100 km/hr are expected. Rather cool with highs 15 C north to 18 C south, east coast.

TONIGHT will be blustery and wet with about 10 mm of rain by morning, winds westerly 50 to 80 km/hr, and lows near 10 or 11 C.

SUNDAY will also be windy and cool with showers, some with thunder and hail. Highs near 17 C and winds west to northwest 50 to 80 km/hr.

MONDAY will continue cool and rather cloudy but with a moderation in the strong winds, and less frequent showers. Lows near 8 C and highs near 17 C.

TUESDAY will be cloudy with sunny breaks, isolated showers, and highs near 18 or 19 C.

WEDNESDAY looks partly to mostly cloudy with stronger winds for a time, and showers or an interval of rain, highs 19 or 20 C.

The OUTLOOK is promising for a warmer spell to develop near the end of the week and last into the weekend of 24th-25th. Highs could be into the low or mid 20s in hazy sunshine by then in a southeast flow, and there will be another hot spell in France and southern England although so far it doesn't look as extreme as the June and July hot spells (29-32 C perhaps). This warm spell for Ireland may fade somewhat by the final days of the month but it should stay a bit warmer than average and reasonably settled.

My local weather on Friday was mostly overcast but pleasant, with an occasionally gusty southwest wind, and highs around 24 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 18 to 24 August 2019

-- Temperatures will average near normal, but the first half of the interval will be about 2 deg below normal, then later 2-4 deg above.
-- Rainfall will average 75 to 125 per cent of normal, with the higher amounts more likely to be in the west and north.
-- Sunshine will begin to recover later in the period and overall it may reach normal values, but certainly a rather cloudy start.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be windy and cool with showers, or longer intervals of steady rain in some northern counties, further south there will be some showers with thunder and hail. Highs near 17 C and winds west to northwest 50 to 80 km/hr.

TONIGHT will continue breezy with showers and lows 8 to 10 C. Winds northwest backing to west 40 to 60 km/hr.

MONDAY will continue cool and rather cloudy but with a moderation in the strong winds, and less frequent showers. Highs near 17 C.

TUESDAY will be cloudy with sunny breaks, isolated showers, and highs near 18 or 19 C.

WEDNESDAY looks partly to mostly cloudy with stronger winds developing (southwest 50 to 80 km/hr), and showers or an interval of rain, highs 17 to 19 C. This rain may be more persistent in west and north, showery in south and east.

THURSDAY will bring gradual clearing and less windy weather with hazy sunshine and highs 18 to 21 C.

FRIDAY and perhaps SATURDAY will be hazy and warm with southerly breezes and highs 22 to 25 C.

SUNDAY at this point looks cooler with a brief interval of rain marking a cold front, highs closer to 17 C, but it would then begin to warm up steadily during the following week as high pressure settles in near the southwest coasts. It could get back into the low 20s by Tuesday 27th.

My local weather on Saturday brought a mixture of cloudy intervals and sunny spells, with highs around 24 C. This time last summer the region was choking with forest fire smoke, but there's very little of that -- in fact, in northern B.C. there is a mixture of rain and wet snow falling at low elevations and accumulating snow on mountain slopes. That colder air is stalled well to our north and won't make an appearance here any time soon (B.C. stretches from 49 N to 60 N much like the UK so there is quite a distance between us and the Yukon border).

-- Rainfall will average 60 to 90 per cent of normal, with the higher amounts more likely to be in the west and north.
-- Sunshine will begin to recover later in the period and overall it may reach normal values, but certainly a rather cloudy start.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be cool and rather cloudy but with a moderation in the strong winds, and less frequent showers although there may be an interval of more frequent showers by afternoon. Highs near 17 C.

TONIGHT will be cloudy with a few clear breaks, and isolated showers, with lows around 8 to 10 C.

THURSDAY will bring gradual clearing in parts of the south and east and less windy weather with hazy sunshine and highs 18 to 21 C. However, it may remain overcast in the west and north with occasional light rain or drizzle. Highs 16 to 18 C there.

FRIDAY and perhaps SATURDAY will be hazy and warm with southerly breezes and highs 22 to 25 C.

SUNDAY is likely to turn a few degrees cooler again and there may be some rain when the cold front moves through, but only a brief unsettled spell as high pressure will quickly build back in.

The OUTLOOK for the week following (26th-30th) is for warmer weather to develop gradually once again with highs slowly increasing towards the low to mid 20s, and reasonable amounts of sunshine likely.

My local weather on Sunday was sunny and warm with highs about 25 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 21 to 27 August, 2019

-- Temperatures will average 2 to 3 deg above normal values, peaking around Friday and Saturday.
-- Rainfall will average 50 to 75 per cent of normal, but most of that will fall later today, and the rest of the interval will become quite dry.
-- Sunshine will average a little above normal, up to 35% in some parts of the south and midlands.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will become windy and rain will move in quickly for western, central and northern counties, appearing by afternoon in the south and east. Amounts will vary from 20-25 mm in west-central counties, to 5-10 mm in the southeast. Winds south to southwest 50 to 80 km/hr by mid-day, easing slowly by late afternoon. Highs 17 to 20 C.

    Thursday, 22 August, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 22 to 28 August, 2019

-- Temperatures will average 2 to 3 deg above normal.
-- Rainfall will average about 50% of normal.
-- Sunshine will average near normal, varying from slightly below average in the west, to just a little above in the east.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will remain rather cloudy except for some sunny breaks in the south by mid-day and afternoon. Some rather persistent light rain or drizzle will come and go in central and northern counties, only 2 or 3 mm accumulation (intermittent wiper conditions). This damp Atlantic flow while rather warm will be moist with mist or hill fog in places. Highs near 21 C except a little higher in parts of the inland south where the sun breaks through, possibly 24 there.

TONIGHT will be muggy and mild with fog and mist at times, but less of the light rain or drizzle especially over central counties, with lows around 12 to 14 C.

FRIDAY will bring some intervals of warm but hazy sunshine, still rather misty in areas near the south and west coasts with sea fog possibly drifting some distance inland at times. Highs 22 to 25 C.

SATURDAY will see the hazy and warm conditions persisting in the east and south, while west and north become overcast with occasional light rain moving inland at times from a rather persistent base near the outer west coast. Highs will range from 18 C west to 23 C east.

SUNDAY will bring a somewhat fresher westerly flow but later in the day it will begin to turn misty again in western and northern areas. Continued rather warm with highs 20 to 23 C.

MONDAY should hold on to the warm and basically dry weather with just a chance of rain in the northern coastal fringes, highs 21 to 25 C.

TUESDAY will continue warm in most areas with a slight cooling trend for the northwest as weak fronts begin to develop and move slowly southeast, highs for most 22 to 25 C but 17 to 20 C in the northwest.

The OUTLOOK, while somewhat uncertain, calls for a gradual cooling trend with occasional showers but also some brighter and fresher conditions with highs 18 to 21 C leading into the final weekend of the month (31 August into 1 September). Eventually this spell could turn quite cool for a day or two as winds turn more to a northerly direction by about Monday 2nd.

My local weather was sunny and hot for most of the day on Wednesday, highs near 33 C, with cloud spreading in by late afternoon and some sporadic light rain with little accumulation but strong southwest wind gusts at times reaching 80 km/hr, now it has become calm and is currently about 20 C and muggy.

-- Temperatures will average 2 to 4 deg above normal.
-- Rainfall will average about 25 to 50% of normal.
-- Sunshine will average near normal, varying from slightly below average in the west, to just a little above in the east.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will feature some intervals of warm but hazy sunshine, still rather misty in areas near the south and west coasts with sea fog possibly drifting some distance inland at times. Highs 22 to 25 C except 18 to 21 near south coast.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to overcast, warm and muggy, with lows 14 to 17 C.

SATURDAY will see the hazy and warm conditions persisting in the east and south, while west and north become overcast with occasional light rain moving inland at times from a rather persistent base near the outer west coast. Highs will range from 18 C west to 23 C east. The rain will eventually move towards the east coast in the form of scattered light showers dissipating Saturday evening. The overnight hours will become clear with fog patches, with overnight lows to Sunday morning around 12 to 14 C.

TUESDAY will continue rather warm in most areas with a slight cooling trend for the northwest as weak fronts begin to develop and move slowly southeast, with some outbreaks of light rain spreading into Connacht and Ulster; highs for most 20 to 23 C but 16 to 19 C in the northwest.

WEDNESDAY will become partly cloudy with showers, highs near 19 C.

The further outlook is rather uncertain but looks fairly promising now with the cooler trend rather muted on latest guidance, possibly back to mostly sunny skies by Friday 30th and the weekend of 31st August into 1st of September, and highs in the low 20s.

My local weather on Thursday was sunny with a few cloudy intervals and quite warm at about 28 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 24 to 30 August, 2019

-- Temperatures will average 1.5 to 3.0 deg above normal, the warmer values in the southeast.

-- Sunshine will average only 50% of normal in the west, to near normal values in the east.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be generally rather warm and humid with some hazy sunshine at times in the east and south, trending to mostly cloudy in west and north where some showers will develop, one or two with thunder this morning to mid-day. TONIGHT will be misty with some dense fog patches developing in light winds in the midlands and inland north. Lows 10 to 13 C.

SUNDAY will be somewhat cloudy to start, but the sun will break through at times by mid-day and afternoon, with isolated showers developing in parts of Connacht and the west to north midlands. Rather warm and humid with highs 20 to 23 C.

TUESDAY will see sporadic outbreaks of light rain spreading further east gradually, with a slight fall in temperatures to the 17 to 21 C range.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY will continue partly to mostly cloudy with occasional light rain in places, and highs 16 to 20 C.

FRIDAY currently appears more likely to bring a heavier rainfall especially in parts of the west, where 10-20 mm could fall, and highs around 17 C.

The further outlook calls for gradual improvements over the weekend of 31 August into 1st of September with some sunshine each day and highs 19 to 22 C, then another brief warm spell around 2nd and 3rd of September, followed by cloud and rain.

My local weather on Friday was overcast with occasional showers by afternoon, highs near 20 C.

-- Temperatures will average 2 to 3 deg above normal.
-- Rainfall will average 50 to 80 per cent of normal, heavier in the north and west.
-- Sunshine will average near normal values, although rather cloudy in parts of the west.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be hazy and warm with a few sunny intervals, and isolated brief showers most likely in the north midlands. Highs 21 to 24 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy, misty with fog patches developing, and lows of 12 to 15 C.

MONDAY will be cloudy with a few sunny breaks, continuing rather warm, with outbreaks of light rain developing in the west and north. Highs 19 to 23 C.

TUESDAY will bring outbreaks of light rain, heavier amounts in west and north (5 to 10 mm), and a slight fall in temperatures to 18-20 C.

WEDNESDAY will start off with some rain in parts of the south and east, followed by partial clearing and fresher conditions, highs 17-19 C.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers and highs 17 to 19 C.

FRIDAY will see a band of rain crossing the country with 10-15 mm amounts in parts of the west and north, closer to 5 mm east and south. Highs 16 to 18 C.

The OUTLOOK for weekend of 31 Aug into 1st September calls for cool and somewhat unsettled weather, a slight improvement by Monday 2nd but after that continued unsettled with near normal temperatures.

My local weather on Saturday started out cloudy with gradual clearing by afternoon, and it was rather cool and autumnal feeling with a high of about 18 C.

    Monday, 26 August, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 26 August to 1 September, 2019

-- Temperatures will average 1 to 2 deg above normal.
-- Rainfall will average 50 to 80 per cent of normal, heavier in the north and west.
-- Sunshine will average near normal values, although rather cloudy in parts of the west.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be hazy and warm with sunny intervals, and isolated brief showers most likely in the west, moving later towards the north midlands. Highs 21 to 24 C.

TONIGHT will become overcast with outbreaks of light rain still mainly confined to the west, and lows 11 to 14 C.

The pattern could improve at some point back towards warm and more settled conditions as high pressure will not be all that far to the west of Ireland at times, so slight changes in model guidance may create a change in the outlook rather easily.

My local weather was partly cloudy all day, with a gusty northerly breeze at times, and therefore rather cool at about 17 C. We were briefly up around 1600 meters at mid-afternoon and it felt really autumnal there, probably around 12 C.

    Tuesday, 27 August, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 27 August to 2 September, 2019

-- Temperatures will average near normal values, but the trend will be towards cooler weather.
-- Rainfall could approach normal values or even 25% above in the west, but will remain closer to half of normal in the east.
-- Sunshine will average only 50 to 75 per cent of normal values.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly cloudy, although a few brighter intervals are likely at first in the east. A slow-moving band of rain will bring 10 to 20 mm amounts to parts of the inland west, making only slow progress by afternoon, then reaching the east coast this evening. Highs will range from 17 to 19 C.

TONIGHT will see the rain slowly moving further east and generally diminishing as it goes, lows will be 12 to 15 C.

WEDNESDAY the rain will become showery before ending in the east, and there will be partial clearing from west to east during the day, but followed by further outbreaks of showers later. Highs 16 to 18 C.

THURSDAY will be overcast with occasional rain and some heavy showers at times, lows near 14 C and highs near 18 C.

FRIDAY will bring further rainfalls, 15 to 30 mm in total for some parts of the west in particular, and highs near 17 C.

SATURDAY will become partly cloudy, breezy and cool with passing showers and a few thunderstorms, highs near 17 C.

SUNDAY will be rather windy and cool with a few more showers, winds west to northwest 50 to 80 km/hr in exposed coastal areas, and highs 14 to 16 C.

MONDAY and TUESDAY (2-3 September) will have some sunny breaks followed by intervals of rain by later Tuesday, temperatures fairly close to average (18-20 C).

The further outlook is rather unsettled but temperatures should remain close to average for early September.

My local weather on Monday was mostly sunny and pleasantly warm at about 23 C.

    Wednesday, 28 August, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 28 August to 3 September 2019

-- Temperatures will average about 1 deg below normal values.
-- Rainfall will average near normal, to 25% above normal in some western counties.
-- Sunshine will be 75 per cent of normal values.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will have some sunny intervals at first, then scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will develop, more widespread in the western counties. Highs 17 to 21 C.

TONIGHT will become partly cloudy to clear at times, with lows 6 to 9 C.

THURSDAY will bring increasing cloud with outbreaks of rain spreading into western counties, highs 17 to 21 C.

FRIDAY will be a rather wet day for most with 10-20 mm rainfalls and highs near 16 C.

SATURDAY will be breezy with showers, rather cool, highs near 17 C.

SUNDAY will continue partly to mostly cloudy, breezy (winds northwest 40 to 60 km/hr) and cool with showers, highs near 16 C.

The outlook beyond the weekend is for gradual improvements and an interval of settled weather is likely to develop especially later next week with high pressure near Ireland.

My local weather on Tuesday was sunny and warmer with highs near 31 C. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Dorian threatens Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic and by about Monday could be approaching the southeast U.S. as a hurricane, with a possible east Florida landfall, or perhaps a coastal storm for the Carolinas. Tropical Storm Erin has formed east of the Carolinas and is expected to remain well out to sea without much further development.

    Thursday, 29 August, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 29 August to 4 September, 2019

-- Temperatures will average about 1 deg below normal.
-- Rainfall will average 25 to 50 per cent above normal in the west, to near normal in the east.
-- Sunshine will average 50 to 75 per cent of normal values.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be breezy, mostly cloudy with a few breaks in the east, and occasional light rain in parts of the west. Winds southwest 40 to 60 km/hr, highs 16 to 19 C, highest in the southeast.

TONIGHT will bring occasional rain in the west, overcast but mainly dry in the east, lows 12 to 14 C.

FRIDAY will be breezy with outbreaks of rain, turning heavy by late afternoon or evening. Highs 16 to 18 C. 15 to 30 mm will eventually fall. Winds southwest 40 to 60 km/hr. Some thundery bursts of heavy rain possible by Friday night.

SATURDAY will see the heavy showers moving east during the morning followed by breezy, partly cloudy conditions with more showers developing in a brisk westerly wind. Lows near 13 C and highs near 18 C.

SUNDAY will be breezy and cool with a few showers, lows near 10 C and highs near 16 C.

MONDAY will be partly cloudy with highs near 20 C.

TUESDAY will bring another outbreak of showers and highs near 19 C.

There will be a trend towards more settled weather by the end of next week.

My local weather on Wednesday was sunny and hot with highs near 34 C. Now-hurricane Dorian brushed past Puerto Rico to the north and appears to be tracking towards Florida with a major hurricane landfall possible around Sunday night or Monday most likely in east-central Florida.

    Friday, 30 August, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 30 August to 5 September, 2019

-- Temperatures will average slightly below normal (between 1.0 and 0.1 deg below).
-- Rainfall will vary from 25% above normal in the west to 25% below normal in the east.
-- Sunshine will average 75% of normal to near normal in some parts of the south.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly cloudy, rather warm and humid in the south and east, but somewhat cooler with occasional rain in the west and north. Highs 17 to 21 C. Moderate southwest winds 40 to 60 km/hr.

TONIGHT will bring heavier bursts of rain and perhaps a thunderstorm, 15 to 30 mm in total by morning. Lows 11 to 14 C. Some gusty winds may accompany a frontal passage around midnight.

SATURDAY will become partly cloudy and fresher with brisk westerly breezes and passing showers, possibly one or two with hail or thunder. Highs 17 to 20 C.

SUNDAY will be breezy and cool with a few showers, winds turning more west-northwest, lows near 10 C and highs near 16 C.

MONDAY will bring a few sunny intervals and only a few isolated showers, highs near 20 C.

TUESDAY will be cloudy with outbreaks of light rain, breezy, with highs near 19 C.

The outlook then calls for gradual improvements to a brief dry and settled spell near the end of the week.

My local weather remained very warm but with increasing high cloud and highs near 30 C. Meanwhile, Hurricane Dorian seems to be headed for the northern Bahamas by Sunday night and a landfall in east-central Florida perhaps as far south as Palm Beach, by Monday night into Tuesday. Monday is Labor Day, on the same day and date in 1935, the Florida Keys experienced the strongest hurricane to make a landfall in the United States (a record which still stands although Camille in 1969 was close). Dorian is expected to be about a strong cat-3 or even a cat-4 at landfall.

    Saturday, 31 August, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 31 August to 6 September, 2019

-- Temperatures will average slightly below normal (between 1.0 and 0.1 deg below).
-- Rainfall will vary from 50% to 75% of normal.
-- Sunshine will average 75% of normal to near normal in some parts of the south.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy and fresher with brisk westerly breezes settling into the 40 to 60 km/hr range after some stronger gusts this morning, and after some sunny intervals, a few passing showers, possibly one or two with hail or thunder. Highs 17 to 20 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy, breezy and cool with passing showers, lows 8 to 10 C.

SUNDAY will be breezy and cool with a few showers, winds turning more west-northwest at 40 to 60 km/hr, with highs near 16 C.

MONDAY will bring a few sunny intervals and only a few isolated showers, highs near 20 C.

TUESDAY will be cloudy with a few outbreaks of light rain mostly confined to the north, breezy, with highs near 19 C.

WEDNESDAY will be partly cloudy, breezy and cool with highs near 17 C.

The outlook then calls for gradual improvements to a brief dry and settled spell near the end of the week. Although it won't be an extended dry spell, the general trend towards mid-September may be generally rather dry with only light rainfalls at times.

My local weather on Friday was overcast with occasional light rain, then clearing by evening. The high was around 25 C. Dorian has become a major hurricane, but there is a slight improvement in the scenario for Florida with models generally tracking the storm up the coast rather than making a complete run inland. Northern Bahamas are bracing for a damaging blow tomorrow.
