I am refusing to watch Contagion because I read it is the most watched movie in the world right now and I am currently in the middle of A Band of Brothers but maybe once this is all over and I want to be reminded of it all....

On a side note, I think streaming services have made a mint out of this and the days of Hollywood are nigh.

Finish band of brothers far more entertaining than contagion

With more cases and deaths per capita, Spain has claimed Italy's throne as the epicenter of Europe's coronavirus outbreak.

Contagion is Outbreak with Gwyneth playing the monkey. She's such a BS artist, the kind that peddles snake oil at times like this.

Yes she’ll probably bring out a covid line of something or other. Surprised the celebrities haven’t tried to cash in on this yet.

Does hydroxychlorowuine work or not? What are the side affects?
After reading that article where it seems to be used a lot in Spain and Italy I'm not sure I've have much confidence in it.

With 6000 people a year in Ireland dying from tobacco related diseases why are shops still selling and the government still taxing a product that kills over 100 people a week when the entire country has gone in to a stoneage lockdown for a total of 137 people being killed by a virus?

How can you possibly compare something that can attack a person who does nothing wrong with a product that kills people who choose to use it.
If we go your route do we ban alcohol because of drunk driving? Ban all foods that may cause cancer?

A smoker's cough won't infect someone else with lung cancer, although passive smoking is a risk, which is why you can't smoke indoors anymore.

If every single person in Ireland contacted covid-19 there could be 138,000 deaths going by the population, number of cases and number of deaths.

    4,830,000 / 4804 * 137

Everyone would like smoking to be banned and hopefully will be in the future.

60% would be the likely max infection rate, with 40% the first year.

    Going by what epidemiologists say.

Not the max so much as the level at which there is a useful herd immunity effect.

The Independent is saying that new measures are likely to be brought in by the authorities to lower the death and case figures. Any idea what these may be?

Smokers make their own choice, let them kill themselves if they want, it's their choice.

If it impacted other people, I'd be all for banning it but it doesn't anymore.

They seem to be optimistic they are close to reaching the peak. This piece, in Spanish, has some experts' thoughts on what comes after.

Dr Birx has advised people in the US not to even go to the grocery store or pharmacy during the next 14 days if at all possible as its expected that the peak will be hitting over that time and its make or break to flatten the curve. Hopefully people listen.

But it's kind of positive if the peak comes that soon and things start to turn around

Except for the bill the taxpayer is landed with to help these people when they get sick as a direct result of their habit? See also, alcohol. Fact of the matter is these products provide such huge revenue for the government that it’s not worth it to ban them outright.

But sure that revenue will surely have covered the bill the taxpayer is landed with. What does it feel like up on that high horse?

Absolutely mental suggestion. The number of americans living from day to day wont have enough food stockpiled to feed their familes. Especially in inner cities. This Dr Birx would do well to engage their brain before opening their mouth. Wjy not suggest a Jim Jones style mass suicide as well? That will really stick it to the coronavirus.

Folks lets not go down the rabbit hole of trying to ban tobacco. Class A drugs are banned in this country yet we still have a big drug problem. Prohibition does not work

Source: Department of Health and the Health Protection Surveillaence Centre.

*"Recovered" rates are not reported by the Department of Health in the above link, these figures are taken from the Worldmeters and Johns Hopkins websites which use data suplied by the DoT to the ECDC under the WHO Guidelines for reporting. Recovered statistics can only be published as "recovered" following two successful tests of being clear of the virus under the WHO reporting guidelines, as a result it is likely the recovered data is skewed.

** Due to the above issue with reporting of revovered cases the number of active cases is also likely skewed.

There is a study now from the Region first hit in Lombardy showing 1 in 10 nursing home residents died from Covid.

Very worrying considering the large number affected here.
