Why are cakes and pastries left out for flies to hop off of them in shops?

Think of these germs as constitution strengtheners that taste nice. How do you expect to survive the weakening of the global penicillin stock if you refuse to toughen up?

i'm allergic to penicillin so i'm ****ed already :pac:

See now THIS is perfect. Maybe we should all start tweeting/facebooking lidl/aldi etc about it. They are definitely losing some custom because a few of my friend don't buy them either, especially in late afternoon. The only time i will purchase is if i am in early in the morning.

It really is perfect. Keeps the flies and germs off and keeps the food fresh too. Win, win all around.

Maybe supermarkets keep everything out in the open, as they think its better for sales, as the food looks more appetizing when it's uncovered. Or maybe they think that customers are more prone to impulse buying, if they don't have to lift up a cover to get to the product. I dunno....

My local Supervalu has truck loads of bread rolls and what not left over at the end of the day. They are obviously making way more than they sell, so they can't be all that bothered by the bottom line.

We are living in a world that is slowly being sterilised by all those wipes sprays and germ killing potions for kitchen bathroom and especially babys toys!

Parents are told subconsciously that if they do but all these germ killing yokes they are bad parents and putting their kids at risk from bad germs.

For years my ma washed down all kitchen surfaces with a cloth washed out in the dish water from the sink and we never had the number of colds and illnesses that people whine about today! There was no sprays or other krap just a box of flash powder or vim for the floors and bathroom.

People no longer have the same resistance to germs as we had years ago because we don't have the same contact with dirt and germs and are not able to build up any proper immunity to them.

Give it a rest will you.:D

I agree with you about all the sprays and stuff however I still don't want pests and snots on my food.

I agree that we're OTT about hygiene nowadays, and some parents won't let anything near their kids that hasn't been sterilised.

But with uncovered goods in Supermarkets, it's more the yuck factor with most people. I just don't want to buy bread or cakes that people have been coughing and sneezing over or that children have been mauling and playing with.

Its actually gross to think about all the thousands of dead skin cells in your food. Even if the person preparing your food washes their hands first, there'll still be dead skin cells in your food. I try not to think about it but its difficult

Have you ever tasted food without dead skin cells? Talk about bland! The current set-up is also a good way of keep our primal cannibalistic urges at bay. Even though we don't consciously know we're eating other people, it placates the urges.

I'm sure I read somewhere that there are always or nearly always some kind of mites in flour.

Yeah, that happens. They are almost unnoticeable unless the flour is on the shelf for a long time and they multiply. I would say they are in most flour used. I freeze my flour for a few days to kill the few that are in the pack and then store in airtight containers.

Its not being fussy to not want a few dozen people's dead skin cells/germs in the food i am buying.

My main point is how does it get past Health and Safety inspectors?

Maybe a few mere invisible-to-the-naked-eye skin cells pose no big health risk? Maybe we have immune systems to fight this miniscule 'threats'.

    This post has been deleted.

Mine are usually laced with dog hairs too.

It's all good for the immune system.

We spend too much time trying to sanitize everything these days.

I'd rather have my food covered in harmless bacteria that my gut and immune system can kill than kill everything in the kitchen so that only the antibiotic resistant stuff survives.

The next wave in hygiene will be "probiotic sprays" i.e. deliberately spraying harmless bugs on everything.

I worked for a few years with those clear plastic sweet stands this stand even had a top cover but countless times kids opened them licked a few and threw them back flies would go into sections left open and get shut inside cue dead flies and larvae I remember them just picking out the flies and putting sweets back for sale The stand only ever got the quick rub with a wet cloth. I still many many years later won't let anyone I know buy those pick a mix pots u fill yourself. I definitely wouldn't consider myself a clean freak but these are rotten and lids don't stop people being rank.

I remember seeing a mother give her kid a very "caring" slap on the back of the head so he would cough up the handful of sweets he stuck in his mouth and then promptly put them back in the pick&mix box.

But this was in one of the unattended pick&mix places you see in some supermarkets I thought the attended ones were okay, but seems they are all bad.
