Why are cakes and pastries left out for flies to hop off of them in shops?

You see the most delicious looking tarts, crumbles, pastries, cakes, buns, breads that your heart would be longing for but its on the counter/table where everyone is coughing over and flicking their dandruff onto and in the summer the flies are hopping off of them  How do the Health and Safety crowd let them away with it?

Has anyone else been turned off from buying because of hygiene reasons or does it not bother any one else?

If anyone works in Centra or the rest - what gives? Why can't they be covered with those see through covers?

And sausage rolls left under the deli lights for hours, so hard they could be used as a weapon and yet still sold as food.

Yes. Salad bars, pick and mix sweets, etc etc. I get a mental image of a sweaty itchy looking man simultaneously scratching his arse and sneezing before reaching in and handling all the good stuff. It's my mother's fault, she painted this picture when we were children.

If the flies only hopped off them it wouldn't be so bad. It's what they do when they land is the problem.

I've used the same plate three days in a row not washing it in between. Brush the crumbs off, and sure isn't the pasta sauce already dried into the plate. I really don't feel like I can judge them.

Meh. Some people are way too fussed over hygiene.

Ok gross but at least it is your own germs and mess. Hundreds of people walk around supermarkets and cafes spreading all kinds of germs/nasty habits around

Cling film them all and let God sort them out.

Its not being fussy to not want a few dozen people's dead skin cells/germs in the food i am buying.

My main point is how does it get past Health and Safety inspectors?

I really don't see the big deal. Food you buy in restaurants often gets handled by a few people before it gets to your plate.

A chef will most likely (although not certainly) have washed his hands before serving it up whereas a kid's hands have probably been up his nose before they go in the pick and mix.

Lack of hygiene (or fly vomit) never did me any harm. Apart from the couple of times I got gastroenteritis. That was genuinely unpleasant.

I was in Tesco in Newbridge a while ago and there was a woman getting pick n mix using her hands as shovels instead of the shovels. That put me off for a while but I could only resist for so long.

Yeah I think about this but then I also think about how people didnt have fridges and freezers not so long ago and ate a lot of very spoilt food by our standards today and most of them turned out okay.
    We are too fussy

When I was on holidays in Marseille, there was a small stand selling pastries. A number of wasps were crawling over the pastries that were being sold. Made me feel ill looking at it.

Was in dunnes years ago. A fat old lady who smelled quite strongly of urine was squeezing the loaves of bread. And i sh!t you not, but she sneezes into her hand and then goes over to fondle the fruit without choosing her bread. Sick!

I also knew a guy who when he was around 12-13 would pick his nose and quite purposely wipe in on the sesame seed buns.

So yes, I would agree with food being covered over and the death penalty to be administered to any nacker who gropes food with their snotty, grubby hands.

Think of these germs as constitution strengtheners that taste nice. How do you expect to survive the weakening of the global penicillin stock if you refuse to toughen up?

OP I started a thread like this a few weeks ago and I was just dismissed also.
I think most people are just sheep and they will not find anything wrong with anything unless the media or Government pushes it and it's backed up by peer pressure.
My threads was just about peoples germs on the food insects and other flying nasty things did not ever cross my mind.

Food on open shelves not wrapped is just pure sick.

Put something in the wrong bin or dismiss global warming and you will see loads of people get their panties in a twist.:D

Because HSA inspectors are there to be check that employees won't get burned, cut etc.

FSA, who ARE responsible, know that its statistically insignificant. Raw chicken at the deli mixing with cooked chicken etc will make you sick, food being left open for 12-16 hrs is very unlikely to.

I see the video, i'm aware of that and i ask, so what? how many has it killed?

why would you discriminate against flies like that? fly feeding is the most natural thing in the world, they deserve food too. if it bothers you so much then look away, better yet walk away, and take your bigotry with you. i cant believe that in 2016 OP thinks its still acceptable to peddle this type of discrimination against the winged ones.

Why are you asking me the same question twice?
I already straight out said nobody.

You then ignored my point I said it is dirty and disgusting.
I said I would not buy food off a shelve without it being properly packaged.

You then responded about too much packaging being harmful to the environment.

Snots germs and all other manner of living things can get on open food.
    I won't be buying it.:)

Well you responded with a video as if you had uncovered something new.

Yes unnecessary extra packaging for sensitive souls does destroy the environment more than is necessary.

Lots of things can get on open food, what of it? It won't kill you.

sure animals and fish have **** inside them. Fish covered in Listeria. Chicken salmonella. Thats without being uncovered. I buy lots of uncovered food from markets. Everything from bread to smoked fish.

Would you drink cat **** coffee? I can't think of the name offhand, but cats eat coffe beans which are then retrieved from the poo and brewed. Quite the delicacy.

Responding to the two points in bold.
Yes I am a sensitive soul and I avoid fish because sea food tends to have lots of worms in it.
I avoid pork because it can have tapeworm eggs in it.

As regards you 2nd points about that coffee I just laugh my ass off at the rich drinking that crap for €500 per cup or whatever it is.:D

It's not so much the germ factor that pisses me off, it's the freshness factor. I've eaten from many a buffet & salad bar, or had cakes & buns that were out in the open for hours. I have never been sickened by any of them. What irritates me is that fresh cakes and bread go hard, if left exposed to the open air for a few hours.

Now that summer ( or what passes for it  ) is here, we fire up the BBQ to cook our dinner a couple of nights a week. My local Supervalu does these gorgeous crusty bread rolls that are perfect to stick a burger or a grilled chicken fillet into. Only thing is, if you go in after work to pick up a few of said rolls, they are hard as fcuk, as they have been sitting out in the open air since mid morning.

It's the same with the local coffee shop. They get in these incredible pastries on weekends, that are baked in a fabulous artisan bakery. If you go in at 10am, they are lovely and gooey and soft. If you go in 3pm, they have lost that lovely softness, as they have been sitting out in the open, completely uncovered, for about 7 hours. Drives me bloody demented !

People - cover your bread & cake products up, to keep them fresh. It's hardly rocket science !!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22 c1ans7even

used to work in mace and the bakery stuff still isn't covered
people had asked me the same before as to why and i brought it up with the owner a few times especially in the summer with the flies etc.
but he didn't care ..just to cheap to go buy some plastic covers
he also made us leave the maple peacans, doughnuts muffins etc. out for 3 days straight before being sold off cheaper on the 4th day before he came along everything everyday was fresh at least
we did have tongs in every basket at least to minimise the people touching stuff concern

How's it supposed to get into the wrapper? No matter what you do food is going to get exposed to germs. Fruit and veg grow out in the open think how many creepy-crawlies were on them before they were picked. Do you think all the pickers have sanitized their hands or are wearing gloves? Are the plants where processed food is made perfect, yes they have to meet health and safety regulations but they're not clean rooms and the employees don't wear hazmat suits. Where is the wrapping and packing made and who's handled that?

As John Cleese said don't labor the point.
Things don't have to be perfect just good enough.
Food sitting in the open in a shop for hours is not good enough for me by a long shot.

This is what you get in Lidl Finland. Why the hell is it not mandatory everywhere?

    https://ninasroadlesstraveled.files.wordpress.com/2014/06/img_2871.jpg

All bread and pastries are covered. They are all in separate trays with tongs for each. How hard would it be to do this here? In my local Lidl I've seen kids pick out stuff and lick them and then the parent just dropped it back in the basket. Same with bread hitting the floor....look around....ok, no staff watching so back in the basket.

Fair enough, it doesn't bother me but the germs you don't want landing on your food or going to land on the packaging, other people will have handled the packaging and more than likely you're going to going to transfer all that to the food any way with your own hands. I think you're chasing an illusion but each to their own.

Its actually gross to think about all the thousands of dead skin cells in your food. Even if the person preparing your food washes their hands first, there'll still be dead skin cells in your food. I try not to think about it but its difficult

On the luas the other day this yoke that was only down from the trees carried out some deep excavation work on his nostrils even though we were all crammed together like sardines. What made it worse was when he "found" something he would examine it, roll it into a ball with his thumb and forefinger and then flick () it. I glared at him and he saw me glaring and kept going, moving on to the other nostril! Fúcking Neanderthal.
