Absolutely not. I'd love to find the moron who started that and give him a good smack.

Another 4 hours left on Nvidias countdown http://orderof10.com/humanityshallbeenlightened

Hoping that it's an announcement of their new line of graphics cards, sitting on a 7950 for years now and want an upgrade of both GPU and monitor. The x70 line of cards seems to be fairly standard in their release pricing over the years so hopefully this year won't be any different

I dunno. I'd love for it to be Pascal, but I don't think they'd announce it this early. Even if it is announced a bit later, I'd expect a paper launch only. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I'm not that excited for Pascal I think they're going to be the janky cards of this generation. Can't wait to see what upper end Polaris is going to look like.

Yeah it's funny, everyone on other forums is going ape**** that we're (probably) getting a 1080 Ti on the GP104 die, and that it's a rip-off, etc. The fact is though that NVIDIA were always going to do this. A) It lets them milk more money - They're mostly selling high-end, and if they can get two Tis out of an architecture all the better - and B) it means they can lengthen the overall cycle time before moving to GP100 for GeForce.

Polaris will be very interesting, as well as Zen. I think we've got a pretty good idea of how things will perform - if rumours are true, etc. - but it'll all come down to pricing.

Battlefield 5 is being announced in similar fashion today. I don't think it's a coincidence.

    Pascal 1080/1070.papercut.

Not at all. This is a new level of shrug from nVidia. AMD released a HBM card what, a year ago now? nVidia have been arrogant anti-competitive asses for a while now, hope more and more just to AMD (though its not been a perfect transition for me).

    :p
Seema to have been quite the announcement! 1080/1070 Cheaper and more powerful than titan

That's kind of how it should work...

So is one 1080 going to be capable of running the 40" 4K monitors out there and high frame rates with all eye candy on?

I'm very interested to see how the performance scales with this thing. We have less texture units than the 980, but about the same number of CUDA cores, and a stupidly higher clock speed. On top of that, it's got butt-tonnes of RAM.

So I'm wondering: Will it do better at 4K, or 1080/1440 at higher framerates (VR)?

Pricing is a bit annoying though. $50 higher on both cards than their predecessors.

Are they? Even the 1070? People are saying that card is very decent value.

    Yup.

That's what I mean, you look at it and go "Wow! Pascal for $350!" But it's NVIDIA's price creeping as usual.

I haven't seen much on the cards but I did read some of the comments on the AnandTech article and most of them were of the opinion that the 1070 is pretty poor value and that the difference in performance between it and the 1080 is too much for the difference in price.

The monitor size doesn't matter, it could be a 14" 4k screen and it would need the same horse power to drive the same frame rate.

Will the impact of the GDDR5X over GDDR5 be significant?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

Hard to say. Given there's only two points of reference, and one of them is completely different to the other in terms of specs.

According to this article it will be impressive(considering is still a 256 bit bus width) but not significant.

Bit of an old man/general tech forum that one though. Overclock.net is being pretty positive about the cards and their pricing, citing competition from AMD.

We'll have to wait for proper benches first I guess.

I watched the livestream last night. Pascal has new tricks (mainly Simultaneous Multi-Projection) that give it an extra performance boost for VR. So Pascal/Maxwell comparisons will look quite different for VR versus regular games.

SMP looks really nifty. That stretching is something that made me skip multi-monitor entirely, and wait for VR. I still think I'll go straight to VR, but for people with three-way surround setups, this is going to be pretty massive.

Likewise, SMP for VR looks really cool. From what Jen-Hsun was saying at the event though, it sounds like this has to be supported in-game, and isn't something that can be retroactively enabled through a driver, so existing games might not see a performance boost. (Unless there's something I'm missing)

Even more so the 1080 runs on a single 8 pin. From what I've seen Nvidia are claiming 25% increase on a Titan/980ti? Assuming thats on cherrypicked benchmarks, maybe a 'real world' increase of 10-15%? I run surround so Simultaneous Multi-Projection looks excellent, not sure if its enough to justify upgrading from 980ti's. I'm holding off until LG & Samsung release their 2.4:1 and 32:9 monitors before I upgrade again, but like the idea of a 1080 in a mITX case like the Hadron and a 34" plus ultrawide.

So price to performance expectations and first impressions is it still worth holding off and not getting a 970 will these be that much of an upgrade?

For any of the NAS heads it looks like the 6 and 8TB drives have finally started to have an impact on pricing for smaller drives, amazon prices for 3TBs have dipped twice this week.

    Any links.

Not really seeing any good prices compared to last year.

Still shocking money for hard drives.

Amazon. £74 down from a steady 86-90 for the last age. Not much, but hopefully a predictor of whats to come. Considering the price of 960GB SSDs now...

Pity the 8TB ones haven't dropped any yet. Cheapest I've found is around €320 so far. Not great value in comparison, but I don't have much drive bays left.
