I don't see how he trolled anyone. He's genuinely off the card, losing out on a big payout in the process. Conor likes money.

So with this train of thought he doesn't retire, doesn't give up the belt and fights the winner of Aldo/Edgar?

That's all fine, but whether they like the McGregor/Diaz rematch or no, surely they have to see that no McGregor at 200 will eat into their profits at their showcase event.

I wouldn't rule anything out because there's a real absence of information (we haven't really heard from Conor at all) but my inclination is that they've reached a genuine impasse, one that will inevitably be resolved because of the amount of money at play, but it's a matter of when really. Does Conor take 3 years out and come back the best in the Featherweight Division? I don't think so, that's not even beginning to look at his ambitions to conquer the heavier divisions.

If McGregor's ambitions still lie in MMA then he's just as much in need to get this sorted than the UFC are.

Personally I think he's done at 145 and would not be surprised if that belt is gone. I don't think he's big enough for 170 and the UFC probably agree with that.

Also, IMO 200 is just another PPV event, it has never felt as big as 100. Im sure the UFC would bypass 200 and get Conor working for the team going forward. The PPV buys will be there regardless of the number

Not on fight night he wasn't.
Nate was back to being skinny fat after the Johnson fight, Conor had all the advantages just like the Mendes fight.

Just cause Conor asked how can a skinny guy be so fat, doesn't mean Nate Diaz ever lets himself get in that condition. Not a chance.
Nates just a bad match up for him, better cardio, better chin, better grappling and more heart.

Didn't look such a bad match up for him in the first when Conor flipped Nate over easily enough and stuck him on his neck. Nor did Nate look so hot when Conor was goading him early in the second round, taking shots from him he could easily have avoided. Conor got cocky is all and thought he had the fight won. Nate is an excellent fighter though and he didn't get away with it. You live you learn. Nate has lost eight UFC fights, not sure why the big hoo haa about Conor losing one, especially considering it was his first time fighting at welterweight.

I think they wanted to build 200 towards being a showcase event with a crazy amount of buys, engage everyone etc. They've certainly gained publicity here, but I'm not sure that translated into the buyrate they were hoping for. But sure look, they haven't even announced the amended card yet, you could have Jones, GSP and Rousey (obviously not very likely) all in action and the card is saved.

This is absolutely one of those situations that will be better judged in hindsight. Right now our opinions are being very much shaped by our pre-conceived ideas because we know very little about what led to this.

    Couldn't agree more.

I would have expected Jones,GSP, Conor etc on the card but 200 never felt stacked at all

Dana White said something very telling in his statement about why mcgregor might be 'retiring' for at least 4 months

I'd imagine if a test was positive it would be in the public by now.

This is the part I don't understand. Dana has completely ruled McGregor off the card now, says theres no going back as $20 million is being spend on marketing and $1 million on a commercial that is being shot right now. Marketing who exactly? The full card isn't even known? to rule this fight out seems a bit strange.

Jones, GSP and Rousey are not confirmed for this yet so obviously theres no publicity for them. Are those 3 in Vegas right now? Is everyone who will fight on the 200 card present in Vegas as we speak?

This is the key example. No matter what anybody says here people are still gonna believe what they were gonna believe anyway.

It was a very odd thing for Dana White to say. If testers were on their way to Iceland or waiting in Las Vegas then the only way mcgregor could avoid the inevitable test without being banned for over a year for dodging them would be to 'retire'

If he was playing dodge ball, he probably could do with making it official then instead of some stupid tweet.

If he was retired for real Dana would have said it surely.

I'd say himself and Dana weren't pulling that well lately. McGregor thought he'd put the ****s up on Dana by refusing to fly out to Vegas and he got a right land when Dana appeared to not care all that much.

The games up with McG. He's like a dieing wasp flying around the place now. Won't be a word about him in a few months time.

No it wasn't. It's standard procedure from USADA and he simply means that if Conor wants to officially retire and then have a comeback, he's put on a waiting list for 4 months so USADA can compare his new results to the old and see if there is anything dodgy.

That means if he retired for 6 months and came back, it would be another 4 months before they could even match him with someone and then 2 months of camp. He's just suggesting that if he does retire officially, he better be prepared to sit out for over a year.

People are keep putting 2+2 together and getting 5. In what world does it make sense for Dana White to suggest the most lucrative name in the history of MMA is doping?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,592 ✭✭✭RoryMac

I think it's as simple as Conor trying throw his weight around by telling Dana he wasn't flying to Vegas, the reason for not wanting to go may be anything from feeling he's making good progress in training & not wanting to break it, having a good time in Iceland with his team maybe even related to the guys death.

But I think it's just a case of Dana calling his bluff and not wanting to fly over to show him he can't run everything.

Next step is up to Conor, take it on the chin and come back for NYC or try again to force Dana's hand and maybe have to follow through on this 'retirement' plan.

No, Conor ran out of gas. He expected to win it with a knockout and it didn't happen.

This is one of the dumbest yet.
The testers have to come to Conor. Not the other way around. As long as he reports his whereabouts he can be in Ireland, Iceland, Vegas or wherever. They have agencies contracted internationally

This is new territory for McGregor. 1st defeat in UFC. Now he has to go in front of the cameras and promote the fight in front of the world. What does he say? He has to totally reinvent himself. Maybe his pr company are still training him in what he should say in the next press conference. Part of the promotion involved an appearance in Stockton, CA, Diaz home town. That would have been a hard gig to fulfil for Conor. He might be looking to do this promotion from skype now, I wouldnt be surprised if he comes out and says that he was in the middle of some serious training and couldnt leave it for that reason.

Good point, was thinking the same.....wouldn't be a bad thing, he changed drastically from that initial RDA presser, it wasn't a likeable McGregor even if amusing in parts

Now that I absolutely believe. We know Dana's no angel, he's not going to go on SportsCenter and say "Look, I've been a dickhead here". Doesn't matter how much you draw for the company, no one is safe from him if they piss him off (throwing Jon Jones in with Belfort knowing he was juiced to the gills, for example).

This'll be sorted out, no doubt about it, but it's bad form on Dana's part if all of that is factual.

Yes I totally agree, also it is really really strange that on any of the interviews Dana has done that not one of the interviewers have asked him why Conor refused to travel.

Every time they get anywhere near asking that question, he completely deflects it.

"He just doesn't want to do it"
    "Yeah, but why?"
    "Because he doesn't want to".

    That's Dana in a nutshell.
