    I don't think I've seen a post on the HTC 10 yet.
This is another one on the radar for a unveiling on 12th April, so just over a week away now.

Said to have a Snapdragon 820, 4 GB of RAM, 5.1-inch display, metal body, and a 12MP back camera which could be similar to the S7.

I haven't owned a HTC in quite a while. What are they like nowadays?

I never had the M7 but it was liked by many on boards. I had the M8 and M9, and the ONLY thing that left the M8 down for me was the 4MP camera which obviously didn't have great detail and tended to overexpose on auto mode (plus some niggles like a stupid coating they left on the back facing camera which scratched easily, and the wobbly volume rockers). But a great phone. The M9 had a 20+ MP camera and you could get good results with a bit of effort but it lost out to the S6's camera. Also the screen wasn't as good as the M8's and was way way off the ideal 2.2 gamma. The sound was about the same if slightly worse than the M8 and definitely not as loud, and overall really wasn't worth upgrading to ultimately.

All the M10 needs is same build quality as M8, same SOC and memory as G5/S7, a killer camera on par with S6/S7, Nexus 6P etc, a good 1080p screen with no bleeding (even the one from the M8 would do but I feel they will go for a 1440p screen like everyone else), 3000mAh battery or better, and keep the boom sound but it looks like they might be following the A9 design and at best moving the bottom speaker underneath the phone. Also a proper fingerprint scanner is a must and it must be quick like Nexus or Apples. Not a lot to ask considering the 6P does all of this already but with a slightly older SOC, and the S7 just looses out on the sound. Also, they should definitely keep the 1.0V+ headphone volume output (they have on the M8 and M9) compared to the piddly <0.3v on the 6P and not much better S6/S7

I don't think you'll have to worry about sound on the M10. HTC have been doing a good job on sound and build quality for a while.

Yeah, I've sold my M9 and using my Mrs has my S6 Edge+ (won't give it back), so I'm using a Smart Ultra 6 until the 10 hits. I've considered other options, but I'm confident enough now that the 10 is going to be a good phone.

I know a guy who beta tests HTC devices, and he has sent me through pics. It's too late in the day for any hardware changes to take place, so he's just getting regular software updates now.

All the leaked pictures are legitimate, so there will be no surprises with how it looks:

    https://twitter.com/VentureBeat/status/712357662730686464

Some things you can say are 99% confirmed:

    - 3000mAh battery
    - 2660x1440px LCD panel
    - 12MP rear cam with laser focus and OIS
    - Dual speaker boom sound using earpiece speaker and bottom speaker

I have it on good authority that the 10 finally takes decent pics. It uses the same sensor as the 6P, but with OIS, which makes it even better.

I'm hoping HTC still have a couple of tricks up their sleeve, but I'm happy enough with what I've heard that I'll be picking this up on release day.

I'm thinking I might make this my first HTC. What's likely to be the most cost effective way of getting hands on one off contract, preferably not network locked? Not that network unlocking is such a big deal.

There's rumours of a new Desire to be launched the same day, with a Snapdragon 652, which is apparently a beast of a chipset for the upper midrange. Something like the Desire Eye might persuade me to save a few bucks.

    Ir blaster? Conflicting reports...

You can make out a plastic panel on the top of the phone on this render - http://m.gsmarena.com/htc_one_m10-pictures-7884.php - but it doesn't look like an IR blaster to me.

Have other manufacturers been ditching IR capabilities lately? I think Samsung have since the S6.

LG G5 still has but question marks over build quality so I'm keeping options open.

Yeah, I had high hopes for the G5, but completely underwhelmed by everything I've read and seen so far.

Definitely no IR blaster. Top has headphone jack only. Bottom has USB-C port and bottom speaker.

some reports are saying it's hidden somehow in the casing.

gsmarena specs show it present, but it hasn't been released so only time will tell!

Here's one of the pics my friend sent me of the top of the 10

He reckons no IR, but I'll be pleasantly surprised if there is one. Not long to wait anyway.

Everything I've read about the H10 sounds fantastic so far.
The camera sounds like it'll be up there with the S7, which is high on my desired (no pun intended!) list of specs.

The only thing that's slightly meh (for me) is that that battery is a suggested 3000mAh, which is at the bare minimum for today's standards IMHO.

Anyhow will reserve judgement until I see several reviews.

The SGS7 has a 3000mAh battery with a Snapdragon 820, and the impression I'm getting is that as long as the Always On Display function is not activated, then it does pretty well, battery wise: for instance, http://m.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s7-review-1408p3.php

Of course, so much is dependant on how a manufacturer optimises a chipset. I have no direct experience of HTC devices, what's the consensus on how they've done generally with battery life to date?

I know it's very subjective, but the guy I know who has a 10 has said that the battery life is very good. He has a lot of logging stuff constantly running in the background as well.

HTC are generally very good at optimisation. Sense is the smoothest of all UI's, and they normally get good battery life. They're really trimming a lot of the junk out of the ROM, which should help as well.

GSM Arena only show 32GB, I was hoping a 64GB version would be available.

As a Sensation and One M8 user, I've never been blown away by HTC. The camera in low light on the M8 is awful, and I've noticed the call volume deteriorate over time, the same as it did with the Sensation.

It's going to have to be pretty spectacular to convince me to stick with HTC.

    Sensation was a poor phone.

M8 was a great phone, and was one of the best low-light performers of 2014. That's one thing the UP sensor was good at.

Hmm conflicting camera reviews there for the m8 camera!
How are HTC with android updates?
Does Sense not complicate / delay releases?

    Streets ahead of Samsung.

HTC push a lot of software updates, and support a device for 2 years. The M8 was on Marshmallow in December, I believe. My S6 Edge+ only just got mm last month. Real improvements are seen with the updates as well. Improvements in battery life, camera, and smoothness are often seen over a lifecycle of a device through updates. The downside of this is that you could argue that HTC push out devices sometimes undercooked, and the units that are reviewed are worse than what they would be after some software updates.

HTC have really stripped back sense even more, and there's a rumour they will push out android updates as little as 2 weeks after Google release them, the same as they are doing with the A9. Because HTC have moved a lot of their apps to the play store, updating is much easier for them now.

I had an M7, it was the first flagship I bought. I loved the phone, especially for the fluidity and appearance of Sense.

Ultimately the camera had a horrible pink tint like so many which meant the camera was unuseable and the battery was poor, both issues were fixed on the M8 it seems.

Id definitely consider an M10 except I feel it will be very expensive

Please tell me you got your M7 replaced under warranty for the purple tint.

I was back in NZ last year and my cousin had an M7 with really bad purple tint, and she was just putting up with it. I told her to contact HTC and she got a replacement sent out straight away.

I love the M8 and can't wait for the 10. The only things I don't like about the 8 is that the camera is bad and the screen even on max brightness is useless outdoors even on overcast days.

Unless they do something terrible I will be pre ordering the 10, reckon it will be around €750 though. The 8 is still the best phone I ever had, I had an S6 Edge for a month and went back to the M8.

Interested in hearing what made you change back to the M8 from the S6 Edge then?
    Always worthwhile knowing such opinions.
    Thanks!

I was going to, but just sold the phone in the end. I know many people who suffered it for ages without ever getting it sorted though :pac:

I went back to the M8 because I much rather the latest version of Sense over TouchWiz. I know you can root and custom ROMs but I just don't bother with all that anymore.

The M8 has better battery life in my daily use experience than the S6E, 2 days versus 1 day.

The M8 can use SD cards, that's a big one for me even though I do use Drop Box and Google Drive.

My S6E had very poor network coverage and regular call drop outs, I got a replacement after 2 weeks and the new one was the same so I sold it on and went back to the M8. I was glad I didn't flog my M8.

    Hi

Been an iPhoner since 2008 but seriously thinking of changing to Android with this phone. Have iPhone 5 currently.
Always liked the HTCs. So looking forward to this.

Any other converts from Apple? Are you happy/unhappy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,178 ✭✭✭✭Captain Chaos

I had iP5S for about 9 months before moving to the M8, the M8 is better in almost every way. What I missed most coming from the iP5S was the outdoor screen brightness and the camera quality and speed. I would not go back to Apple again if I can avoid it.

So, Basil3, what does your buddy reckon the sound is like? Dual external speakers being missed much? The stereo Boomsound was one of my favourite features of my M8
