Disappointing to hear about the Tuam bypass. The way it interchanges the current N17 would have made it ideal to open early.

I wonder what the reasoning behind it is.

With the progress being made, early 2018 seems even a little pessimistic!

The firms building the road have contracts. If they miss deadlines it costs them money. Maybe if they open the whole thing early, they get a bonus.

But if there is no bonus in the contract for opening one stretch early, why risk the overall plan?

If the NRA wanted bits opened early, they should have written the contracts that way - but the NRA don't really care about 1 year of traffic in Tuam - they are thinking National Road network, which is their job.

What's the crack 'Don't walk on footpath joints'?
We used to play that as kids. :-D

An absolute monstrosity of a junction, when a completely free flow partially unrolled cloverleaf would have been cheaper.

The capacity of the network should always supersede the placement of service stations.

They aren't building that service station now.

Nothing less than a fiasco. Building a junction with less capacity which given the earth works involved will cost more.

    Only in Ireland.

The junction was designed with the service area in mind.

This will be a motorway-motorway interchange. High grade roads should have high grade junctions, not roundabouts.

The solution to this will end up being the same one which will end up costing over 300 million in retrofits in Cork, 'throw a set of traffic lights on it'.

In fairness, neither of these roads has enough traffic to justify a motorway in the first place, this is not going to be a congested junction. Unless the traffic queues from Galway stretch this far.

Both the N18 and N17 have traffic levels that would require motorway in Ireland on approach to Galway. The issue being that they don't directly replace the existing roads, the M17 could be seen as direct replacement for the R347.

The construction of the GCOB should make using the M17/M18 handier.

Calm down. Not much capacity is needed and it is your personal opinion that it will cost more, not fact.

Of course! Sure don't places like Kolkata (Calcutta) build great motorways!

@ M17: Do you know when the flyovers at Coldwood and Kiltiernan are due to open? I presume this will give workers on site a lot easier time of it when the route is fully closed to these busy roads.

Just wondering about Kiltiernan, will they have to route south bound traffic on the bridge on a temporary basis first so they can finish the road south of the bridge
