Just picked up my first bike the other week!

Fitted a ground anchor (hence the bike living in the hall for two nights!). Then took the top box rack off.

    Nice bike.

If you're selling that plate for the top box I'd be interested in hearing a price, PM me if you are please. I'm looking for one for my son's SV.

Last try get the chain off the ground. Its easier or a thief to cut through the chain when they're on the ground, look at going through the pillon foot rest hangers or swing arm & tyre (for example).

Really not a good idea to post your reg no. or pictures of your locks/security on the internet. (There's a house number too, maybe GPS coordinates in the EXIF data...)

    I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm raptured by the joy of it all

Yeah these are 3600 lumens. Very bright. To be honest I got a few flashes whilst riding home at night. I had them set to 30% brightness so ill turn it right down to lowest settings. Failing that ill adjust the angle also. DO you get flashed at all during darkness?

Well I normally leave them on the lowest setting. I adjusted them in front of a wall at night time with the help of a friend.

I shined the bikes dipped beam and marked the height of that on the wall. Then covered the dipped beam and out the spits on ensuring that they were not higher up than the dipped headlight.

Get flashed maybe once a month which I think most bikes do due to the bounce of the headlight.
They regret doing it once I flash them back with the full beams !!

Cheers! Think I'll hang onto the plate, can see myself using it in the future. Only reason it came off was because I don't have the actual box at the moment, couldnt have it spoiling the look of my new baby :D

The R1 is in with Danny and Garry at DML Racing for some tuning work,so this gives me a chance to enjoy the 996 again.
So today I did this to the 996.
Front brake wasnt activating the brake lights.Checked the bulbs and all the loom connections to make sure all was well.
Tracked the problem down to a possible faulty micro-switch,so I took off the micro switch and cleaned it down and the connectors at the other end.

A cloth, some GT85 and a tootbrush did the job nicely.
Simple and free 5 minute fix.:)

A few pics of what the micro-switch looks like and where its located on the 996 and most other sports bikes.A fine clean down with a toothbrush and a spray of GT85 and the switch was working again.
Might be of some use to any other people with the same issue as me.:)

Usually you can listen to see if your micro switch has failed, an ear to the switch gear will tell you.. Normally it will, or will not 'click' when you activate the lever.

How's that 996 compared to the R1?. I've never rode one.

Thanks, never knew that. You learn something new every day.:)

996 is like a noddy bike compared to the R1.The R1 is big and wide, the 996 is narrow and small, akin to my old RS250.
996 is more torquey down low in the revs but runs out of steam a bit at the higher end.996 likes to wheelie alot at low revs when you give it some throttle
R1 pulls like an absolute demon in the higher revs and just seems to want to keep on going.

The 996 is such a flickable bike, its like a housefly corneriong, thats how quickly and easily it turns.V twin sound with the termis and race chip is just beautifull.
The R1 takes more effort to get her to turn, due to her bigger and wider size. But still an awesome machine through the bends.

I love my 996 and the raw mechanical sound and heart of it,
Thats said though, the R1 big bang engine with the full titaniun Leo Vince system going up through the gears with the quickshifter is kinds a mad sound too.:D

Inline 4 meets V4 meets V-Twin.Thats the sound and bark of it

Today I did the following to the R1.............

Small crappy useless rear hugger off.
New larger SBK rear hugger on.

New stainless bolts screwed in with some copper grease. Then went out for a spin.:)

Currently making up a loom for my Garmin 765T Satnav to go on the R1.
Lidl soldering station for a 7 euro in the bargin bin and some bits n bobs from Halfords.
Cant believe Im saying this, but they are cheaper than Maplins.
    Maplins are bloody expensive.;

Sound from that Leo Vince Titanium SBK system is all I need, and it turns heads on the pathways, trust me.;)

Today I made up the loom for the R1 and the Garmin 765T Satnav.

Lidl's finest soldering station,a meter of shrink tube from Maplin and I soldered 2 leads I got of another bike member for free.

Battery Tender SAE to USB charger and that gives me power to the satnav while on the bike.

    Cheap,simple yet very effective.:)

Finally fitted heated grips to my bike. It may have taken me buying an entire tool kit, cutting off the throttle sleeve, gluing it back on, it breaking off, gluing it back again in the wrong position, gluing it back the right way, running out of cable, dismantling the headlight, repeatedly taking the grips off to get them in the right position but...

I did it :) First proper bit of motor DIY.

Meant to put this up yesterday.
What i did to my bike was got on it and rode it!
It was a day for spinning not getting hands dirty!
Hadn't the Tiger out since Christmas so it felt really good to get a 100 mile spin in yesterday on it!

On the way home,a lad on a bandit 600 attempted to overtake me.
We'll that's what i think he attempted as I laughed while watching him disappear into the abyss in my mirror!!:pac::pac::pac:

    I owe you one.

I was nearly going for another Renthal gold sprocket, but thanks to you,I went for the stronger and better Supersprox option.:)

German Ebay for the win too.;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,731 ✭✭✭goodlad

Yeah dude. Renthal sprockets have an awful reputation for wearing down extremely fast.

I will be going for a supersprox stealth sprocket paired with a DID gold chain when im due to change.

Oh, the handguards on my fz1.. they have a section that pops out to let some wind through incase its warm out. But they just released a LED running light that pops into the handguards.

The finished product will have amber for the indicator flash instead of the white light.

Your bike looks lovely the way it is.

As my late father allways used to say to me about my cars n bikes....."more electric gadgets means more things to go wrong".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,731 ✭✭✭goodlad

Ah yeah there isnt much else to do. But adding some lights into the handguards will be great.

I was already trying to figure out where to mount some led running lights so these will be perfect

Recently changed the front tyre from stock to a Dunlop sportsmart 2 tyre. Had already noticed a huge difference in cornering but it really really became evident yesterday on my first trip into the mountains. Went two up and had an absolute blast whizzing past 2m of compacted snow on both sides before heading into hairpins and tight corners without a care in the world with regards to grip.

Missus was screaming so asked her if she wanted me to slow down and she told me to shut up and drive Haha. Apparently was a mixture of fear and excitement. Cant wait to get out again.

That said, aggressive breaking and cornering two up put a fair bit of weight on the ol wrists going downhill. Must get her to work on the ol inner thigh muscles :p

Long story short, the center stand on my NC seized. After about 3 days or 6 hrs of hammering the pin out of the shaft ( using a sledge hammer :o ) I could only get it to move a few millimeters. I went out and bought a blow torch and tried this method. After about 1.5 hours of heating and cooling the pin eventually came free:D Lads it was a pig of a job.

Seemingly quite a few of the NC's have experienced this problem. Its likely not enough grease was applied in the install. Its a 2 year old bike not a bike sitting in a damp barn for 30 years:rolleyes:

I have cleaned the pin up and I still have to clean out the center stand shaft. I think installing a grease nipple is a MUST have mod to stop this happening again. Anyone any experience with installing DIY grease nipples?

I have done a few grease nipples, That shaft looks very rough, I'd think about making it very smooth. is there bearings inside the ends of the stand where the shaft sits? Oil seals?
If there is then you may have to replace the bearings and seals first.
If there is none then a grease nipple will just piss grease all over the place make a bad mess.
Lots of bikes come from the factories with no or the barest smear of grease on the pivot bolts which leads to what you have had to do.
New bike doesn't mean greased well, it just means assembled.
Any bike even new ones should have the pivots pulled and greased before much use.
I'd be inclined to use a good slather of waterproof grease on the bolt and reassemble it.
ACF 50 have a version called corrosion block or Belray waterproof grease will also work.
The problem with the grease nipple is the clearance between the outer tube and the inner pivot bolt, there may not be enough clearance to fit a nipple without it fouling the bolt, unless its really short.
To clean the inside of the outer tube I would use some emery paper on a wooden dowel with a slot cut in it, mounted on a drill.
Spin it up inside the tube and flush with some kero until it looks clean.
Dry it off pack with grease and reassemble.
Might be worthwhile doing the swingarm pivot as well as the shock linkage at the same time just to be sure its all good.
