Sorry to hear about your injury trouble, from the sound of things you did really well to hit 1:34, and 1:29 or better would be guaranteed on a good day.

+1 on the suggestion above about the drive being a contributing factor. I have some sort of hip/groin thing going on for a few years now, and I always tried to avoid driving in the few days before a race - operating the clutch seemed to aggravate it a bit. I was over on the deep southside last night and I had to do an extended reversing manouevre to extract myself from a clogged pub car park and get into the only parking space on a one way street - after operating the clutch while twisted around I could barely walk when I got out of the car.

Since you were able to finish the race you should be okay in a day or two - best to err on the side of caution though this close to the big day.

Cheers aero, the hip isn't bad today thankfully. Won't risk running on it today though even at recovery pace. Yourself and FBOT might be on to something with the driving, i never really considered that being a factor. And you would have thought FD would have offered to drive back up when I was injured, to busy twating and updating her status on Facetube!!

bad timing with the hip yesterday Tang but you seem to know yourself that it was just one of those things, training has gone well and you can't legislate for something like that....you did well to finish the thing actually, I remember running a 1.34 ( I think) when shooting for sub 1.30 and it was a horrific last few miles, well done.

    Onwards and upwards!

If you'd have let me drive in the first place.....!!! I also offered to massage it but apparently only TBL is allowed :D glad it's not too bad, don't run today & ring your physio in the morning - ok??!

A question for those who post here, to begin I'm not having a go at the event as it was flawlessly ran, I went with the 90 mins pacers yesterday and checking my mile splits they were 38 secs up on target after 4 miles. Now I know the second half of the race had a couple of steep hills, surely this was to hot a pace to be running? Both pacers finished 30secs up on target, again to fast? As I said not having a pop, just curious to what people think?

Maybe a very slight bit too fast at the outset but to be within 30 seconds is good pacing

They were a little hot alright, B. I work in kms so the pace should be 4:15/k or so. We averaged about 4:11 /k for the first 5 miles which I thought was ok with the hills and headwind to come. On the middle, windy section they could have given a little of that back but maintained the same pace, more or less. As you saw, most of the pacees were dropped here. I tucked in behind the lads for shelter and when we turned right at 10 miles there was just myself and another lad still attached. The pacers agreed they were a minute ahead of schedule and told us to carry on alone. They were going to run 4:30/km for a while and re form the group. The two of us kept up 4:11 to the finish and crossed in 1:28:20 or so, with a quick last k. They crossed a minute later and had a few in tow, likely those who had been ahead and faded.

I'd be slow to criticise them myself, it's a difficult job and they're only a guide at the end of the day. They were never more than a few seconds quick. Ideally they'd have kept us all together in the headwind but thems the breaks.

No wouldn't criticise them at all, it is a very difficult job with people depending on you to get them around. I thought 38secs was a lot to be up after 4 miles, but in hindsight taking course and conditions into account it was probably the correct strategy.

    Well done on Saturday B.

Obviously you're capable of better than the time you ran, but the calculators still give you sub 3:20 off that result for the marathon.
    You'd take that wouldn't you? ;)

    Sunday 6.3.16

Rest, hip wasn't as sore as Saturday evening but erred on the side of caution and left the prescribed 4 miler. I remarked several times to herself throughout the day that I NEVER felt so sore after a race in my life. I'll take that as I gave all I could give and a good sign.

    Monday 7.3.16

30 mins recovery, pace was north of 9.50min/miling for this and thankfully no pain at all from the hip. Will be taking the week very handy but getting the required mileage in all going well. All positive once more.

Great that you got out and no trouble from the hip. Well done on toughing the race out. Sub 90 is there the next day

    Tuesday 8.3.16

    7 miles Easy@9.02min/miles in 63min 14sec

The acid test I felt to see if there was anything nasty with the hip from Saturday's half. All went swimmingly thankfully, couple of minor darts of pain but nothing I was concerned about.

    Wednesday 9.3.16

    8 miles Steady@8.02min/miles in 64min 17sec

One of those runs you wish you just go on and on. From the outset I bounced along doing this, think I've made my mind up and will wear my NB 3190's for Rotterdam, lovely shoe to run in. I glided along doing this and felt nothing at all from the hip.

    Thursday 10.3.16

    Rest.

    Friday 11.3.16

    6.05 miles Easy@9.01min/miles in 54min 34sec

Few easy miles before heading for Donegal, again I bounced along from the start and felt like I was gliding along. Lovely mild morning, could Spring be with us at last!!

    Saturday 12.3.16

16.50 miles Various including Cara Bundoran 10 mile in 71mins 34sec

Got to Bundoran early and got 3 miles Steady in before the race, plan was to run it at MP plus 10 secs for first 2 miles and do the remaining 8 at MP. Glorious morning in Donegal but with the obligatory strong breeze blowing which would affect us as normal along the bypass section.

Took my place midway in the field knowing this would prevent me from bolting off to hard. First two miles were on the button in regards MP plus ten seconds. I upped the pace here but upped it to much and didn't let up till I crossed the finish line. I just felt so good so I went with it, I was taking everything in around me and noticed stuff I never seen before doing this race and I've ran everyone since it started. The white horses were rolling in off the Atlantic as the Drowes feeds it's way into the sea. It was here I dropped off Murph D last year when I was on my limit, what the difference a year makes, felt like I was floating on air today.

Turned off toward the bypass just after 5 miles and into the breeze, the 10km runners joined us here so there was people to shelter behind but I never hung around in any particular group to take advantage. Loads of great support out along here, the locals really make an effort to encourage you. I was never passed from 5 miles on and got stronger as the race progressed. Turned off the bypass and back towards town and the turn at KFC where the sting in the tail that is Roughey awaits.

It was here last year I could aid Murph D no longer and had to let him go, thought of you D as I passed. Still passing loads of runners, still feeling strong. Flew up Roughey and turned left for the half mile downhill finish. Put the boot down bit more and ran 6.22 for the last mile. Not what was in the plan but I was never in bother doing this and could have ran another 7-8 miles at that pace I felt. I'll put it down as a good workout again, others will probably disagree. The plan will be followed religiously from here on in. Still my favourite race in Ireland, just love it.
