Hi all. Did anybody in here see the documentary Cowspiracy, just watched it myself there. Pretty depressing stuff, which has furthered my belief that we are doomed, bringing most of the other species with us.
Being a farmer myself, albeit very small-scale it has me conflicted. Animal agriculture, be it beef, dairy, poultry, is not sustainable for a planet gaining 216,000 people everyday. The message of the program was that we have to take the animal out of food production. Everyone on a plant based vegan diet.

I watched it its all bollox he forget to mentioned how many people die each day in the world.
We will be all dead and gone before the earth stops spinning

    Pheasant here also.

Lovely recipe that I got from a Scottish gamekeeper...

Flatten out the breasts and fill with haggis (any good white pudding will suffice), wrap in tinfoil and bang it in a 180* oven for 20mins. Delish. The pudding/haggis keeps the meat really moist.

    Lovely for breakfast also.

    Edit.
Yikes, I forgot to add you should wrap the breast in streaky bacon and garnish with plenty black pepper.

Our outfarm is about a mile away. It is split by the motorway. There is a six acre field which runs along the motorway. At the end of this field is a cottage- which has nothing to do with us- this is serviced by a country lane with a few other houses on it. The cottage is rented out to a lad in his early thirties by the owner of the house. Yesterday the guy in the cottage went up north and got fuel in a bowser, when he got home he realised the pipe wasnt long enough to reach his oil tank. He went up to our field and drove down the field in his car and bowser and emptied the fuel into his tank. When coming back out he got stuck. Now he would have been trying to go up hill at this stage. He walked to a neighbours farm to get a pull out.
My dad was going over to outfarm and saw gate at road was open in field and closed it, thought no more of it. So this morning the lad who pulled him out said sorry about the mess in the field:confused: we knew nothing about it until he told us.... The lad never asked could he go into the field and more often than not there are cattle- including stock bull in that field-.
So would you say anything to this lad. I wouldnt mind if the field wasnt so wet, but at the same time manners cost nothing. sorry for the long post.

'he went up north and got fuel' - :D.
Put a lock on the gate and tell him, he should have 'fooking asked' in the first place.

I'd definitely say something Whelan, sure there was no stock in the field this time but what about the next!
If cattle wandered through the open gate onto the motorway it'd be a very dangerous situation. Who'd be at fault there if someone crashed into a bull? Your stock and responsibility, even though he let them out unknowingly.

I also see reggie got a new enterprise ;)

He said to him you better say it to Whelan about the tracks. The lad said why! He couldn't believe he hadn't asked could he enter the field . No lock on gate as there are rebounders in field. In fairness to the guys who work on them they always ring in advance to ask permission to enter

The box that the carrots are in. It's a Spanish broccoli box. It's called Puerto Export, they're a growers group.

I would drop into the guys house and politely inform him that if he wants to use the field again to ask first. You don't want too make unnecessary enemies.
Secondly I would buy a good chain and combination lock. When the lads who service the transponders want to enter the field you can tell them the code or they can keep a note of the code on their mobile phones under your name.
As Kovu said the possibility of someone leaving the gate open and cattle getting out onto the road is not worth the risk. Stock are our responsibility and it is up to us as farmers to ensure within reason that they cannot stray onto the road.

    I've a scone related story.
Some of the lads in work used to visit a particular cafe to get tea and a scone. There was four of them this day and they all got the same. One of lads started bragging when it was noticed his was the only one heated up. He went on about how the waitress liked him an all sorts.
He went to the toilet near the end and the waitress who heard the whole slagging told the rest of the lads she only ever heats up the hard scones left from yesterday. The fresh ones don't need to be heated. :-)
