Starbucks, Amazon, Nvidia, Facebook and Paypal are also tanking. Out of my 19 positions 16 are down. Only Spectra Energy, AT&T and Verizon are up. Netflix and Tesla in particular have fallen very far.

Rebound or Manic Monday, what do you think?

I think it's a bit of a panic reaction to poor revenue reports from LinkedIn and Tableau. Personally think an evening like this opens up opportunities. Just got on board myself there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,367 ✭✭✭Ardent

The revenue reports weren't that bad. Certainly not enough to warrant -50% on the LinkedIn Share price.

I think the US jobs market report yesterday compounded matters:
    http://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2016/feb/05/markets-us-jobs-report-non-farm-business-live

The market is fickle right now. IMO there's palpable fear of an imminent bursting of the tech bubble or, worse still, of a recession.

Momentum stocks are out of fashion, anything with a very high PE is extra risky.
These stocks have falling a good bit off their high and more to come most likely.
Then health/biotech under severe pressure from the Democrats and Trump in the presidential election.
Oil, no one wants to cut back as more and more oil is pumped.
Banks not hot as interest rates less likely to rise.

I can't remember where I saw ir, maybe CNBC. There was this guy who sold his assets in 2008 as he saw a big fall coming, he bought back since, but has now resold all again saying the worst is yet to come.

We will probably have a day like August 24th again. So much fear in the markets right now.

Do think facebook is heading the myspace way, a glorified ad-laden messaging app.
No actual physical products (unlike google/apple) a virtual product with virtual worth.

They'd want to start making and shipping mixed reality hardware units quickly.
Even if they snap-up live VR content creators such as NextVR/Immersive/JauntVR
it will still needs a delivery mechanism for the 1bn users.
    The next playstation/xbox perhaps?

Interestingly Netflix just launched an app on the GearVR

    Linkedin also needs complimentary product/services,
not just spam offers from cheap 'offshore' workers.

Without doubt. The thing is the last computer generated flash crashes was in upward bull markets. Which if we are in a downward bear market the next Flash could be to the upside......a flash Dash maybe.. All speculation of course.

FB gets a ton of money from targeted ads. They've got no serious competition. I think they'll keep on growing.

Another hammering on the European markets so far today. Disastrous start to the year with fears of a global recession looming!

I’m new to this investing thing and only started trading last week.

Lost a bit with BOI in particular and was watching other companies to invest in.

A lot seems to be nosediving at the moment which probably is a short term thing but if investors pull their funds out, where (besides currency) do they invest?

I think they invest in gold and I took a look at Randgold Resources Ltd.
Popped my monies into it and thankfully it’s reducing my BOI loses.

I guess when there’s a small panic, people rely on gold.

    (learning as I go)

I think BOI is incredibly high risk to be investing in starting out.

Don't panic and don't overtrade. Use market fluctuations to your advantage or ride them out.

Paddy Power Betfair seems to be plummeting in the last week...stick or twist???

RARE ($51.64) & BMRN ($65.11). 2 orphan drug companies with good pipelines which were hit harder than most by the Shkreli scandal due to the area in which they operate.

Not invested in either (I don't invest in individual stocks), posting for others who may be interested in researching them and also for my own personal interest upon review of this thread in a few months!

    Its all stupid.

88 Energy, great progress today. If the 3rd lab result is positive next week, it should continue to grow.

Currently just company stocks in which I have previously worked (for anonymity reasons I won't be posting them, they're completely uninteresting anyway).

Other than that I'm looking at investing all my cash (bar circa €10k) in the VT all world ETF but given the current market trends I'm holding off. Depending on which country I'm living in I'll create a more balanced portfolio with an appropriate mix of bonds/shares but at the moment I'm not sure where I'll be based in 12 months so limiting my investments due to the tax complexity in Ireland.

Bank of America is definitely on my radar now, the fall looks way overdone, could be an easy 50%+ gain when things improve.

I thought this thread would be a lot busier tbh, a lot of cheap looking shares out there atm getting cheaper by the day!

I think a lot of people have been scared after what has happened over the past month, a lot of people down a lot of dosh no doubt (including myself!). But you're correct, it is most certainly a buyer's market, particularly with US EFT's which are well down, people seem scared to purchase when they drop and then pile on once they begin rising. Historically the Vanguard US and World EFT's have provided great returns

A lot of quality shares are starting to look cheap, but it's always possible they could get cheaper. In fact, the way the markets have been behaving lately it wouldn't surprise me.

I'm holding what I've got and will buy a little bit every now and then when the prices are good, particularly if there's dividend attached. I'm probably not going to recover my paper losses this year but time of on the side of the patient investor.

The markets are way to volatile for now and with gold racing up it just shows how risk averse investors are. I could get most of my pick at great prices now but just can't see a bottom yet. too many big swings in short time frames to have any confidence this is over.

I'm busy trying to hoard up as much as cash as possible, wait until the VIX drops down a little bit from recent highs and then go all in on a US domiciled ETF like VOO.

US domiciled ETFs have been confirmed by the revenue as taxable under CGT (33%) as opposed to exit tax (41%). Also no stamp duty for buying them and there's the annual exemption available to write off against taxable gains.

Other stocks that look very tempting:

    Bank of America
    Smurfit Kappa
    Volkswagen

    Hi all,

First time posting but have been following the thread since New Year's.

Finally got up and running with DeGiro, thanks to all for the hat-tip!

Managed to pick up some Tableau and Tullow oil in the recent trough. I'm not interested in a quick buck so hopefully there will be some recovery in their share prices in a year's time or so.

If anyone could point to a primer on how to navigate and get the head around the various functionality and jargon of the DeGiro interface, I'd be much obliged.

    Thx.

Lots of fear in the market. People scared to lose money & take it off the table.

Whats that saying?? be greedy when people are fearful and be fearful when people are greedy. Time to load up I think...and especially on Financial stocks.

Personally cant believe the amount of fear around banks over that article on DB. From what I read of it an analyst said there was a possibility!! of DB not paying interest on its CoCos if something bad happened in their Q1 results. CoCo interest is 350m..DB have 1bn in cash available to pay it...needs a considerable loss by DB to not be able to afford pay interest. Seems you could make that same statement about pretty much any bank out there...cant pay interest if something bad happens during the quarter!!

Lowest €95 price since 2010, but it could be more value after the storm settles. News this week was for VW to recall 680000 cars in US over airbag problems.

One option that was temping was x27 (2700% ROI) {with Betway} for VW to cease trading before EOY'16. The price was since reduced and the market is no longer available, but still holds valid for anyone who choose it back in '15.

Probably a VOW3 split, re-brand and phoenix type operation if they really wanted to try to cut some losses, although still likely would be obliged to rectify historically affected diesels anyway.
