Well, if this guy's to be belived:
In a statement to the BBC, a man claiming to speak on behalf of the leadership of the Continuity IRA said its members were responsible.
He claimed Mr Byrne was targeted because he had been involved in the killing of Alan Ryan in Dublin four years ago.
Ryan, 32, was a leading member of another dissident republican group, the Real IRA. He was shot dead in September 2012.
So... CIRA are on the same side as the RIRA?

Fair points. Though I would like to believe that the BBC wouldn't publish the claim unless a known codeword had been used in the communication.

In the last five or 6 years the CIRA have split into at least 3 factions one of whom doesn't really do much, another that got involved in criminality but whose leadership were all arrested 18 months or so ago and yet one other that is a full on criminal gang.

The CIRA claim all seems quite strange. You'd think that the photos of two of the lads would clear it up quite quickly. I also find it very hard to believe that after 4 years they have decided now is the time to get revenge. Chances are they were paid to make the claim or just did it for the attention.

    From the BBC article
The CIRA spokesman who issued the statement to the BBC provided a code word, but there is no way to independently verify this claim.

The CIRA have been moribund for years, then they suddenly manage to pull this off?

Sure groups are always recruiting etc.

I'd say this claim is legit. There was bound to be some sort of revenge.

I wouldn't say the bold Gerry will be too pleased at this announcement, what with him being out on the campaign trail and all.

I'm surprised that for such a well planned operation, they ran away with their faces on full view.

    Possible involvement of ex-Provos.
Possible use of Provo acquired weapons.

Doesn't help their election when it comes to attracting new voters who don't approve of their past.

The CIRA and other dissident republicans are going to use the run up to the anniversary of the 1916 Rising to make a political point.

Daniel Kinahan, the son of mob boss Christy Kinahan, was the chief target of the Regency Hotel operation although David Byrne was killed.

Taking him out would in their eyes give them legitimacy at time when the Gardaí appear overwhelmed by a surge in crime especially during a general election campaign when dissident republicans are heavily involved in anti-water protests.

Of course the dissidents fund themselves through criminality and don't seem to be as keen to die for Ireland or do hard time for a political cause when they can live playboy lifestyles off the misery of families affected by drugs.

Yeah Im not believing the CIRA done this,it smacks of desperation on their behalf trying to sound relevant in the crimeworld now, there is always informers there was at least 6 people involved, there was faces seen too,the Identity will get out sooner rather than later imo.

For yer man Ryan, who was in the Real IRA not the continuity IRA, and was shot four years ago?

The various dissos can't seem to fart without the security forces knowing about it. What are the odds on them managing this?

He'll be doing his nut right now, for the reasons someone else posted above.
