So, just over a week away until the league opener v KK. Hard to believe how quick this has come around, seems like only a few weeks ago they knocked us out of the AI semi final.

What team will start? Who is/isn't available (for both sides)? Other than Tadgh de Burca, I'm unsure of who is/isn't available so I'm going to guess a team something like:

    SOK

    S Fives B Coughlan N Connors

D Fives Ph Mahony S McNulty

    J Barron K Moran

    A Gleeson Brick J Dillon

    C Dunford M Shan Bennett (x2)/Paddy Curran

That's probably our strongest side so there would likely be a few new lads given a start or at least see some action (K Bennett, Conor Gleeson etc.)

What kind of way will we set up? It'll be interesting to see if we will set up much differently from last year and try be a bit more attack minded. The reality is we will probably find it difficult to rack up much of a score regardless of how many we play in the forwards as KK's physicality is always going to be something our younger forwards will likely struggle with.
It will take a usual haul from Shan, pace and running at the KK defence from Dunford/Barron/Moran and a bit of class/skill from Aussie, Bennett and Paddy Curran to put up a score good enough to win.

It would be great to get the win as it would set us up nicely for the coming games and take a bit of pressure off needing to get results from the Dublin, Cork and Galway games (the most likeliest places we'd be looking to win) and try make the knock out stage.

Our record v KK in league and championship the last few years is awful so we're surely due a win against them at some stage, here's hoping!

Probably the best time you could be playing KK. They've been off on their team holiday and fielded their U21s in the Walsh Cup.

That's if there is any good time to play them

SOK and Philip Mahony have featured that I've seen so I would be surprised to see them start. Think Iggy will probably be given a game in the goal. Darragh Fives probably centre back. Patrick Curran will surely start, Shane Bennett possibly playing further out the field. Not sure who to drop though. Derek rates Jake Dillon's work rate very highly so he's unlikely to be the one. Will be interesting to see Aussie in forwards, even against a KK outfit that may not have too much preparation done recently.
Conceivable that we will start with none of our half back line that played for so much of last year and were a huge launch pad.

Going on the last few games this is my guess on the starting 15 versus Kilkenny

    1. SOK
    2. S Fives
    3. B Coughlan
    4. N Connors
    5. S McNulty
    6. D Fives
    7. D Prendergast
    8. K Moran
    9. J Barron
    10. S Bennett
    11. J Dillon
    12. A Gleeson
    13. P Curran
    14. M Shanahan
    15. C Dunford

Haven't seen much of Philip Mahony so far but if he's good to go he'll drop in his usual position instead of one of the wing backs. Brick could also start in the half forward line. I would think (and hope) that we will not play a sweeper during the league and see where that takes us. At least then we'll have a better idea going into championship if we need to persist with a sweeper or not for the rest of 2016.

It will be interesting to see if SOK or Iggy will start.

    Who is D Prendergast?

Word is that Paudie Prendergast has dropped himself off the panel.

Why would he have fallen out with Derek? I thought all the Ballygunner lads were given extra time off cause they went far in the Munster club Championship. By D Prendergast he meant Paudie.

Half time Waterbird 0-4 Louth 1-7

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,432 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Full time. Waterford 1-9 Louth 1-10. Louth with the last minute winner but they played the second half with 14 men and against a stiff wind

    Apologies.

I was wondering why Iggy would start as SOK is by far superior so I was just wondering if there was some issue. I didn't know that the Ballygunner lads were being rested.

Western intermediate and Junior club draws have taken place. Not so sure about the Eastern one.

Last year it used be Thursday nights (followed by stupid amount of "changes" on match days)

Are they doing the same squad numbers thing this year?

Some very interesting results from the FitzGibbon tonight from a Waterford point of view. WIT beaten which is disappointing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,297 ✭✭✭Deise_2012

Ucc are gone and they had a good few lads playing, Jamie Barron midfield, Shane Roche and Conor Gleeson were corner backs, Gavin O'Brien was wing back. DJ Foran and Mark O'Brien started the first game but were dropped for the following 2 games I think.
Carlow beat Wit, Micheal Harney was centre back and Colin Dunford midfield, that Jack Fagan fella was full forward but it has him down from Meath so I presume he's not playing for us this year?

Waterford had a good few lads aswel, Aussie Gleeson was marking Harney, Stephen Roche midfield, Jerome Maher and Willie Hahessy were the corner backs, Craig Guiry full forward. I saw Eddie Barrett and Shane Mcnulty on the bench for the last few games, are they injured? they should definitely starting for their colleges if they wanna be challenging for places on the Waterford team too

You obviously werent at the ITC v WIT game, Mcnulty started center back while Aussie started full forward. Fagan not eligible to play until he lines out for De La Salle in championship.

CIT have Mikey Kearney and Ray Barry.

CIT have a good team but face a big task up against a star studded UL in the QF's.
Carlow IT seem to be motoring well in fairness. Is Ross Browne playing with them still too?
Kieran Bennett involved with LIT also.
Don't think anyone involved with Mary I is there?

CIT against UL could be a cracker!

UCC's elimination mightn't be the worst thing for Waterford, means less games for Barron, Devine etc.
Have a slight fancy for CIT to go all the way with the motivation of being at the home for the finals weekend. UL are a huge test of that though and if Bubbles is suspended that would be a massive blow to their hopes.

Devine got injured against LIT so could be a doubt for Sunday. Mary I and LIT I think will take all the beating. Definitely Bubbles is a loss for CIT but on the other hand UL are missing Tony Kelly so it's swings and roundabouts!! LIT and WIT will be a cracker aswell. Home advantage could have a big bearing but with WIT's record in this competition it's hard to write them off.

Throwing an attempt at a team, based on fact Philip and SOK seem to have been given extra time off.
Some talk of Paudie Prendergast having left the panel here, hadn't heard anything like that. If he is available I'd imagine wouldn't be much between himself and Gavin O'Brien for the wing back slot if Gleeson is moved forward. Think might see him in half back line though with no de Burca or Philip (possibly) for this game.

    Iggy

    Noel
    Coughlan
    S. Fives

    McNulty
    D. Fives
    Gleeson

    K. Moran
    J. Barron

    Dillon
    Brick
    Shane Bennett

    P. Curran
    Shanahan
    Dunford

3 of those, Gleeson, McNulty and Dunford all still in FitzGibbon. Presume the 3 will still be available Sunday and I think all 3 will should see action.

McNulty will get the nod as the manager seems to rate him highly. Gavin O Brien has been poor in his outings for UCC against UCD and LIT especially so I can't see him starting. Shane Roche and Conor Gleeson have been very impressive for UCC so maybe they will see game time. If it is true about Prendergast leaving the panel then it's hard to blame him. He has been around the fringes of the team for the past 3-4 years without really nailing down a place so maybe in his own mind he doesn't see this year being any different. Ryan Donnelly is another fella that has not made himself available apparently from earlier in the year.

Pity about Ryan Donnelly, thought he had a very good debut in the opening game of the league 2 years ago. Hasn't really figured since.

Patrick Curran at centre forward is an interesting one for Sunday if it's true. That leaves Dillon and Brick as wing forwards and Bennett Shanahan and Dunford inside. Would they try Bennett at wing back and Gleeson beside Maurice? Looking forward to it now that the new season is upon us. Interesting interview with the manager on the Irish Examiner today. It looks like the same game plan from last year will be used again. A case of if it isn't broken don't fix it.

Looking forward to Sunday and the season ahead. A league semi final, a run through the qualifiers to an all Ireland quarter/semi would be a successful season. A concern I'd have is that we're after getting found out tacticley
