    Fantastic show.

Anyone know if they plan on having more episodes? The real theme of the show is paranoia and telling lies, and where it ultimately leads you to.

Very well made, soundtrack was excellent. Will probably watch again with my flatmate. Very interesting time in history.

Seemingly it's going to be a This Is England kinda thing. There's plans for a D86 and D89.
Although it would be fantastic to have a D92 also, see where they're all at after the fall of the wall (spolier!). But that's years away from development, so I guess it all depends on the ratings.

I love that idea, as I am a big fan of This is England and The Take, a jump in time allows your characters room to grow, develop a backstory and new motivations etc.

Suits the format as you are dealing with different international landscapes and politics. Cannot wait to see more.

Just finished this off in a binge watch. As someone who grew up in West-Berlin at the time I must say they got it spot on and the era is very well replicated. They took some minor liberties but really impressed with it. Some of the tracks - especially the Neue Deutsche Welle stuff - I hadn't heard in years. Ah the memories :)

Only weakness was in episode 4 I think; the whole Linda thing between where she found out he's the spy and her death makes no sense at all. But other than that very well done and very entertaining. Good pace and like the actors too. Probably one of the best TV series that has come out of Germany. Really recommend it.

I watched this is in the space of a week. A very entertaining series, that really wracked upped the tension as it progressed and really captured the paranoia of the cold war era. One or two things didn't fit for me where how he could go from being drugged in his kitchen in East Germany to be being a top notch spy with 5 minutes training and the freedom that Leonora seemed to have in wandering round Germany, I'm sure she would have been followed and tailed at tall times. The acting was of a very high standard, I was very impressed with Alex & Wolfgang Edel and Schwensteppe.

It would be interesting if it followed the This is England narrative, I would definitely watch it. The soundtrack was amazing, so many great 80's songs.

Considering it was such a flop in Germany it must have really exported well, or else they have an indulgent executive like The Americans.

The article I linked to says it wasn't a flop on RTL, just that it wasn't the great success they'd hoped for. It rated above average for the channel, with 15.7% of the audience share but was up against Germany's The Voice, which got 16%. It was very disappointing for RTL because they'd marketed the series hugely, but it's still profitable especially when it's selling so well outside of Germany. I hope the budget doesn't suffer too badly though. Period tv is very expensive to do well and in many ways, recent history shows are even harder to get right and find suitable props for.

Their big problem was that a lot of those who wanted to see it had already seen it by other means, took way too long to appear on German TV. Plus RTL are not exactly known for quality TV, so that would also not have helped.

Going to be called Deutschland 86 and carry on Martin's story 3 years later. Wunderbar!

Now to be known as Deutschland 86, the new episodes will pick up three years after Season 1 with Jonas Nay’s East German Agent Martin Rauch on the frontlines of the battle between the Ronald Reagan-led West and the Soviet Empire. With proxy states in Africa as the backdrop in what we now know were the final years of the Cold War, the Stasi agent ends up in the Johannesburg of the Apartheid-ruled South Africa, the Tripoli of Col. Gadhafi’s Libya, Paris, and both Berlins.

jesus 3 years between series, pretty long, still at least its something to look forward to, this was easily one of my new favorite shows lat year, its been pretty hard to find others that watch it though, i think after 86 the plan is to do Deutschland 89, id wonder if theyd do a 92 also to show martin after the reunification of the country,

Production on 86 commenced in recent weeks. No specific air date at this time. I'll wrap the story outline in spoiler tags.

Created by Anna Winger (Head Writer) and Jörg Winger, Deutschland86 picks up with Martin Rauch (Jonas Nay), his Aunt Lenora (Maria Schrader) and their colleagues at the East German foreign intelligence agency (HVA) three years after DEUTSCHLAND83.
Abandoned by Moscow and desperate for cash, the East German leadership pushes their secret operatives to experiment with global capitalism and save their sinking socialist ship. Long banished to Africa for his sins in 1983, Martin Rauch is now sent back into the field. Dark deals and a dangerous mission lead him to South Africa, Angola, Libya, Paris, West Berlin and finally back to East Berlin, where he must make an impossible decision. Our hero’s journey plays out to a soundtrack of international pop music – against a backdrop of Perestroika, proxy Cold Wars, the struggle to end Apartheid, a year of terror in Western Europe, and the creeping feeling back home in East Germany, that the end just might be near.

Deutschland 86 will air on the 19th October. Not sure if RTE will air it again as I believe Amazon have bought the rights to it.

If it's *ahem* out there from Oct will English subtitles be available without a TV version, or will we've to wait until it hits broadcast around here?

D83 was a great show though I think it is one of the rare shows that really, really needed 4-6 extra episodes. Sometimes events happened so fast that the emotional build up to really make sense of them wasn't there. Especially anything to do with Martin's romantic relationships. He swung from being desperate to get back to Annette in one episode, to seemingly genuinely in love with Linda in the next with absolutely nothing to justify the rapid change of heart. Many of the secondary characters seemed to change motivation for plot reasons without us getting to see any reasons why the character would do that. Just a few more episodes to let the characters breathe and for us to understand them better would have really elevated the show.

It was still excellent. The overall story was fantastic and some of the characters were fantastic, most especially Schweppenstette, and I loved Tobias and Alex. But compared to the better seasons of The Americans (which D'83 draws obvious comparisons with) where the characters (except Paige) are all excellently drawn and given room for the audience to understand why they do what, and feel the way, they do D'83 was lacking. I really hope D'86 corrects this. I understand the show was a hit in Germany and received mediocre reviews. So hopefully that has led to better timing in this series. Though even if it hasn't it will still probably be well worth watching.
