Started playing Undertale too. Only played just under an hour so far. I'm kind of liking it but its too early to form a solid opinion yet.

Been playing a lot of the witcher 3 this weekend. I think its is too big. There are far too many missions. It could be 3 full games. I get paralyzed with so much choice. There is so much content yet I rarely pause to smell the roses because I'll never get through it if I do.

This is from being used to linear games. People get overwhelmed with game choices simply because they're not used to it or out of practice... like bad habits from modern games that sometimes good games need to beat out of the player. Demon's Souls did that for the years of games that taught people to be impatient and not think... then DeS punished them for it over and over and it got a legendary fame for being difficult despite it being fairly standard compared to slightly older games. It wasn't difficult it just didn't tolerate what other games wider-appeal games do.

With TW3's abundance of quests and open world just try to relax and approach it like you would reality. Don't have the attitude that everything needs to be done. What do you want to focus on the most? What's nearby? What's priority to you? Enjoy being lost in a forest and finding a random quest. Don't think of it as distracting from linear plot. The open world can be enjoyed :) I think the choices and expansive open world in TW3 gave a really nice pacing like I'm experiencing right now in Yakuza 5.

So yeah I'm playing Yakuza 5 right now. Absolutely amazing game. Love the new grappler/weapon character Shinada. The story is as exciting as ever and I think they're doing the character appearance order a lot better.

Also still hopping on Warframe and Planetside 2.

I boot up MGSV to check on combat deployments but I can't be bothered to actually play much of it anymore. I don't even have any interest in the new FOB event despite me being in the top leaderboards for the last one. Konami gave me a special badge to celebrate my dedication to that Skulls event ^_^

I think I might get back to The Cat Lady... I was eyeing the launcher on my desktop last night. I didn't feel like playing it without my friend watching but she's just too busy so I think I'll finish it off solo now.

I'm messing around with the Steam controller at the moment, and just trying a few games. Still getting through Dying Light, though i've hit a bit of open world fatigue at the moment. My XCOM playthrough also starts tonight, after not having a chance over the weekend.
What do you want to focus on the most? What's nearby? What's priority to you?
And if your answer to all three of these questions isn't GWENT!! you're playing it wrong :P

  • Getting through Black Mesa (Steam Version)

Really did make some excellent changes when compared to the mod release i played through 2 years ago.

I think I've reverted to preferring short linear games. There was a period there where every big game had to be open world and full of nothing (or collect 100 hidden useless horse shoes). Undertale and the Portal games are the perfect length for me. Finish-able in three sittings. I can completely understand if people think that is ridiculous. I'm just itching for a conclusion to the Witcher at this stage as the mechanics (combat, detective bits, travel, item management) have grown somewhat bland.

That said; The Witcher 3 is fantastic. I actually I just played a bit last night that blew me away.
Traveling to Edren's homeworld to convince his viceroy to turn against him. Jumping through those random worlds was amazing. Each had their own story to tell. I was genuinely terrified of the possibilities.

Do you have to get through it? I haven't played the Witcher series but were I to play it I wouldn't care about whether or not I "finished" it. Games are there for our entertainment. They don't necessarily have to be completed as a series of item checklists. Take your time, smell the roses you want to smell, immerse yourself in the game world when you want to. That's what games should be about imo: the experience. :)

As someone who's not played Witcher 3 yet and still working her way through 2, the use of spoiler tags is greatly appreciated. :)

Playing The Witcher 3 at the moment too and think it's incredible. There's so much to do I'm literally finding myself getting lost in it for hours. I've played over 24 hours so far and am pretty sure I've barely scratched the surface. For the type of game it is I think that's what it should be all about, the world is fully realised and side quests can be just as long and challenging as the main quests.

I do want to get through it. I definitely drop games once I get bored, I'm very aware of this. I've done it far too often hence why I tend to somewhat rush through a lot of single player games. If I take the completionist approach, I'll get 100% of the first quarter of the game done and get bored. An example of something I didn't bother with was
getting as many characters as possible to help against the Wild Hunt defense at Kaer Mohran. On the cusp of a big battle, I just want to do it!

How far are you after 24 hours? I'm playing the gog version and can't check properly it seems. The in-game clock says a week, which can't be true. I think that might be in-game time rather than real-time.

In game clock says just under 4 Days for me, which is somewhere about right if I remember correctly. I'm currently
searching for the Bloody Barons wife in Valen so he'll tell me more about Ciri and what happened when the Basilisk attacked

I just bought the witcher 3 and I'm actually so excited to start it. I haven't really played any "big" games like rpgs and such because they're always so time consuming and I leave for a bit and lose interest, but I'm willing to sink a good few hours into this. :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,944 ✭✭✭✭Links234

    Really enjoying Witcher 2 :D

Came across a troll who was cooking elf and onion soup, he offered me some, and one of the dialogue options was "I don't like onion" :pac:

I seriously love that the games capture the dry sense of humour from the books so well, it's just spot on.

Bought the Witcher when it came out and although I want to love it, there is something about it maybe the mechanics that I just can't afford the time to sit down and spend all day at. I only get short periods of play.

Pre-Orderes Rise of the Tomb Raider ....realised 48hrs later I got the 2013 version free with it. Playing and loving it right now. Playing with the steam controller lying back on my bed is just win.

I've stopped playing it for weeks and gone back a few times. The quests are often short and sweet so its easy to get back into.

Can't believe its 1am already again :pac:

Tomb Raider is fantastic. I said years ago, when playing the Legacy of Kain series, that if they wanted to do Tomb Raider right, give it to Crystal Dynamics. Looking forward to the sequel now!

Working long hours this month with lots of travelling. By the time I get home, I'm shattered so was looking for something easy and relaxing.

Finished the main quest of Witcher 3. I can now have my life back to a degree. I've been playing it solidly everyday since before the weekend (which is a lot for me). I was completely hooked on the main quest from the
Isle of Mists onward. I actually thought that was the final mission from reading small things online. There is quite a lot after that. I thought the Wild Hunt was some kind of undead army up until I saw Imlerith, even though it mentions before that they are elves. I still got it in my head that they were some kind of supernatural undead elves.
I doubt I'll do new game+. The game has consumed too much of my life for that. I think I'll stick the difficulty at death march and finish all the side quests while I'm still enjoying it.

Im in a quandary, i just dont know what to play at the moment since finishing up Witcher 3 loose ends and the DLC??? Maybe some Mad Max, I hear good things

mad max is great fun, loads to do and it's mostly openworld with a few unlock with quests sections

If you can get it cheap, it is heavily discounted a lot, its worth picking up. It can get a bit repetitive but it is a lot fun especially the vehicle combat.

Picked it up for around €10, have been meaning to try it for a while

Once you get the Thunderpoon, the car combat becomes a lot more fun IMO. Fighting the convoys was the best part of the game, but I liked the whole thing overall. It's definitely worth picking up on the cheap.

Almost at 60 with Kate Bishop in Marvel Heroes, just gotta do a few more Legendary Quests and some patrols and I'll hit that. Can't wait for that account-wide XP boost to make things a bit faster for the rest of my roster. Not sure who to level next, probably Star-Lord, Iron Man or Thor (with the Jane Thor costume). Maybe Spider-Man but I want to get the Spider-Gwen costume or Team-Up for that.

Been putting a few more hours into Just Cause 3. I've been catching up on the Bombcast while playing, and I totally agree that the fact that all the cool toys are locked behind boring-ass challenges kills a lot of the fun for me. The only challenge I actually like doing are the wingsuit races, because nailing a perfect run on one of those is incredibly satisfying. The rest are boring, especially the snoozefest car and plane races. I don't play this game to drive stuff, except helicopters, which seem to be made out of paper mache. The game itself is fine, they seem to have fixed a few performance issues, too much stuff going on still kills my framerate and I don't think the AF stuff was ever fixed. I like freeing the settlements, but there is so much busywork, and unlike Mad Max it's not even that fun. I'll stick with it for another while at least.

I also started playing Civilization V again. I haven't played properly since before I got Brave New World (was in a Humble Bundle I think) and I'm completely lost. I'm playing on babby difficulty with a small map and I think I am about to start losing badly. I'm completely boxed in on both sides by the only two countries who don't love me, I'm running out of tiles, I have too much gold and not enough everything else because I focused on Liberty and Commerce, it is a disaster. Still love the series though. It feels tight like a simple, well-designed board game, but has more grandeur and scope than most open world games. And it's got a great soundtrack.

Started playing sid meier's civilization v today. Pretty decent game and very addictive. Played it for about 6 hours straight.

Can't believe it has been out so long. Do many boardsies play it?
