Virgin Atlantic's last 747 flight to Heathrow is today also, they will remain on in Gatwick/Manchester for now but their time is numbered. 2019 is ultimately when they will retire the lot afaik.

terribly sad, my favourite plane in the skies.

i would assume however they are still being built and will be flown on for 20+ years yet, no way companies who bought them in the last 5 years will retire them anytime soon.

BA just refitted new first class cabins into their 747's so I reckon you're right about the retirement there.

747-8, and unfortunately not selling very well as a passenger carrier.

Seems that EI645 is going around because a greyhound was spotted close to RWY28 , man seen jumping the fence to retrieve the dog

I'm afraid the future is twin engine light weight aircraft e.g 787,777 and A350, I reckon in 20/30 years you will find it hard to spot a 4 engine airliner.

Which is interesting. Noticed the 2nd flight too the other night. Air Canada obviously got the contract!

Wait....are the refugees not already in Europe?

The RCAF have also operated some flights, I think.

It would be. However I'm pretty sure this was a "Camber" flight (CMB589) operated for the US DoD by N732MA B737-800! A Cessna 172 would not be doing 157 knots and would not have flown from Chania to SNN in 4h50m.:)

I was thinking there was something odd alright ;)

What's going on with EI153? It seems to be heading towards cork? Or is it different routing to DUB?

EDIT: has turned towards DUB, still a strange routing

Looks pretty standard to me, they often route that low (South)

They tend to avoid that mid/north wales area, can sometimes be an active military zone AFAIK.

Completely normal routeing for a weekday, when the Welsh military areas are active. Strumble Head is the waypoint concerned.

I haven't seen it quite that low before, interesting.

On that note, I realise its a traffic/ATC thing, but what dictates why an LHR-DUB flight will route south via Wales or north via Manchester? The military area is right in the direct line of site, so would push a flight either north or south, but is there a specific reason to choose north or south?

Flights from Gatwick usually go south via Wales but occasionally I've seen them go north via Manchester.

Traffic flow management. Generally speaking traffic leaving Dublin to Ireland will cross north Wales and route to London.

Likewise traffic leaving London will route via the likes of CPT STU VATRY for Dublin.

Not always the case but that's usually the flow.
