See the end is finally nigh for heavy cattle.
The one thing that I cannot figure out is the Beef Data and Genomics scheme. To me it seems like a contradiction, on one hand paying farmers to produce quality continental cattle and on the other factories penalising them for same.
Are we just playing into Larry & factories hands again or are my views jaundiced

You are dead right. Sure even the grid doesn't make sense. Why Pay top money for a u grade animal that won't have the correct fat cover unless it is a big weight (in the case of bullocks anyway). Then penalise an o grade black or white head animal that's the "in-spec" weight of <380kg.
If that's the animal they want the top place on the grid should be for o-r grade animal under 380kg. Farmers should be rewarded for producing to spec, not rewarded in one way and penalised in another.

Do these car case weight restrictions cover steers and heifers as well as Bulls ? What about cull cows?

Yeah cover Bulls, steers and heifers but would be rare for heifers to be killed over 400kg dw anyway. Don't think it matters with cows as the majority go into the mincer anyway (open to correction).

From what I hear you will be rewarded after Christmas for under 380, your reward will be that you won't be cut 30-40c/kg'
For overfat/overweight lambs we're cut 25c/kg and give free meat as well in the case of overweight.............you won't be long learning

Cormac Healy is shark.. He knows there's extra numbers coming on stream from next fall and when a shark gets a whiff of blood.......

It will all depend on the weekly kill as to to when they will really implement this.

Thanks for that, have one guy quoted 3.50 to me but never used him before as an agent. Have a bit of time to play around with at least, only have them on a ration to maintain their weight since start of Dec when the arse fell out of the cow trade.

Notice cattle that have been killed this back end have killed out very fat compared to other years.
Nothing killed under a fat score of 3+ with the majority 4 to 4+. A few Angus heifers went to 5's.
Don't know if it was that cattle thrive was excellent from September on and they fleshed up quicker or that we wernt keeping a close enough eye on them. Is it madness feeding to this level of fat score or would a 3- do?
    Is there a sweet spot?

There is alot of men holding cattle because they will lose a fortune if they killed them.fat class will be a problem there

3+ 4= is the sweet spot for plainish cattle to ensure you maximise conformation grade. Good continental cattle are as well gone at 3=. Particularly going forward if this weight limit craic takes hold.

Is there anyone here that can tell the difference by eye between 3+ and 4- or 4=?

Hard enough to judge the fat score when you are not at it every day. I used to judge by the fat around the tail head but someone on here had a good post a while back . It went along the lines of judging different types of cattle differently. Can't remember who it was.

Mostly u grade heifers killed here. Always try and feed them into 4- or 4= if possible. But would agree weight limits would be a factor in us killing them at 3=
