Shop around / threaten to cancel. When I changed to the R, my previous crowd tried to take my pants down and charge me another 300 to keep the premium going. It was hassle, but I wound up cancelling and getting a cheaper policy than I previously had.

In my experience there are only two companies that will talk to me for insuring my gti - Aviva and 123. None of the others either want to know or those that do quote a ridiculously high price. Like a previous poster said I too have 7 yrs ncb and age is not an issue. You'd swear it was a lambo you were trying to insure!

I'm with Chill for a few years but I'd be slow enough to recommend them. They're basically a broker that will get you the "best" quote from 7 or 8 companies.

I'm with AIG direct since last April who were cheaper when I renewed by about 150 euro. Previously I was with AIG through a broker and they couldn't match the direct quote from the same company for some reason. I think it was about 400 euro. I enquired last week about changing to a golf R and it only was 65 euro more for a year.
I do think that all car insurances are on the up so reckon we are going to have to face increases regardless of our driving history.

So have you decided on what you are going to do? :)

    @everlast75
Decided to not go for the R although in fairness the dealer said if I change my mind he will go in over Christmas to get the order in before the 31st to avail if the VW offers. He says there will not be the same value again next year. Whether that's true or not who knows? Still don't know if I will change my mind but doubt it.

    That's my old car !

Jesus, I traded that back on Aug 26th...

There are a few episodes of Frasier there too...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,741 ✭✭✭MisterDrak

Just checking the mileage, and I traded it in with 21K,km, some dealer has been putting up KM's on my baby ! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭dar83

Well I test drove it anyway and when I did there were 26 or 28k km on it from what I remember, so I'd say that ad even needs a bit of updating!

Still big enough money for a 2013 gti
Lovely spec but surely it's too dear?
You must have got a good deal mister Drak!

Traded for €29K back in Aug, so they are loosing money on it now.

Still I packed the new car with extras, so they made their money on me :(

    P.S.
The suspension was never right on that car, so buyer beware !

My 132 GTI took a good while to shift too. The dealer only offloaded it in early December (I also traded it in back in August).

They're either pricing them too strongly or people are just favouring buying new, to take advantage of the low PCP rates on the new stuff, etc.

Very hard to see beyond the 1.9per cent apr on a new car with the improved spec etc when buying.
VW Ireland made a bad mistake with pricing and standard equipment when they introduced the gti and R models first.they were too expensive and poorly equipped at launch .

Likewise the Scirocco compared to the spec you get in the UK, basic petrol is a miserly 1.4l 125 bhp, I would be up for a 2.l GT if they brought it in.

They did it until recently and it never sold. Think VW registered one of them last year.

    Picked up Friday.

First impressions... Very impressed overall. More than I though I'd be. People will probably remember me almost diverting to an A6...

I went for the half leather alcantara interior and it's very nice. Well put together and feels as nice or nicer as any of the other cars I've test drove in the past few months. It has everything you'd need, and a few nice touches. I really like the xenon headlights and the way they adjust to cornering. The stereo is decent for stock but I do slightly regret not getting the dynaudio upgrade. Integrates well with the phone and getting Carplay activated next weekend.

Personally I love the white and the alloys. Prefer them to the GTI stock alloys. The chassis is brilliant. It's firm and sporty but comfortable. Feels very difficult to disturb.

I'm coming from a GTI and the diesel is different. Being honest, it's not as nice. The power is quite limited outside 2000 - 4000 rpm. It's fast when you are in the band, outside it it's not. I may look at a tuning and pedal box which apparently transform the car. Driving wise as I mentioned above it's very impressive from a handling point of view. The manual gearbox is fantastic. Very precise. Better than the MK5. The car overall feels very refined. You are cruising along at 150 kph before you know it. You don't feel the speed like you do in a MK5.

I've only done 200 Km and I'm averaging around 40 mpg whilst pushing on a lot and doing a lot of town driving. In my GTI I average around 24 mpg doing similar driving. Coupled with diesel being 20c a litre cheaper it is a substantial difference.

Overall I'm very happy. Will be interesting to see how it goes over the next few months. The Mk7 GTD/GTI/R are pretty special in my (bias) opinion.

Very very nice, well wear. The GTD wheels are one of the nicest oem wheels out there, absolutely agreed.

So I was right after all lol.... CarPlay wasn't fitted. Are they retro activating it free of charge? If so, you're doing well, I think it's €300++ !

As an aside, I was car shopping with my sister today. She's looking for something relatively "sensible". Looked at Focus's, Octavias, Quasqai's, Golfs, Leon's, Jettas... All much of a much ness. But I must say none of them touch the Golf in terms of interior feel and quality imo. The skoda was particularly grim which surprised me, given the love it gets and it's obvious link with VW. Felt very utilitarian compared to even the VW Jetta.

Thanks. Absolutely agreed re interior. Personally I prefer it to Audi interiors too. You were indeed 100% correct. They are fitting it next week free of charge. I refused to accept the car until they agreed to do it!

Excellent, you're doing well as the dealer will take the hit on that. VW Germany will still charge them 200+ for the activation codes.
Let us know how that goes and if I you can find out how much it would have cost you I'd be interested in hearing...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭Nonoperational

Apparently it's €258 cost to them, and they are taking the hit x2 because my OH got a new car from them too with the promise of carplay being activated. I made a bit of a fuss to be honest, feel a bit bad in hindsight, but the two cars are going in next weekend for activation!

Haha. Goes to show the salesman should have done his bloody homework. What's happened here is, your dealer looked at your order, saw "car net" on the spec (which is standard on every Golf) and assumed that was CarPlay.

There's been huge confusion over CarPlay / app connect, VW have made a right mess of communicating exactly what's what with it.

But its actually simple enough! Unless you spec Pro Nav it's not standard.

Let us know if the activation works out. It was only in the last week or two that it was officially announced it could be done (in UK).

Yeah I got on to the sales manager and there has been major discussions with VW Ireland. I'll let you know. It's amazing how difficult they make it. I could probably order a code from eBay Germany today and it would work.

To be honest I think it's a bit rich charging for silly extras like this on a 40k car.

I don't actually think it's down to stingy-ness. I think it's down to lack of product knowledge in their own product! They're actually generous enough now on standard spec. The R is better spec'd here now than an equivalent UK car, which would have been incredible a few years ago. When I was ordering my R I badgered the dealer and VW about the driver profile select button. Why wasn't it standard on a 45k car? It was only €100 or something. So I got it added to my spec. 6 weeks later, VW amended the standard R spec and added the button as standard.
In summary - IMO they just didn't know anything about it, a few lads like me had asked for it so they thought f**k it, make it standard. Same theory applies to CarPlay imo.

Good sale on Fords for January in case you hadn't seen, I ordered myself a Fiesta ST :D So the Z on has a few days/weeks left!!

Long time lurker of this thread. Picked up a 152 GTD last week. Came from a 2.0 TDI golf 6. Agree with all of above re wheels. Mine's white too. Don't have car play though :(

Really like the adaptive cruise control. Bit fiddly the controls, (they were actually better on the stalk like on the 6).

The bending Xenon's really good too. The auto dimming (light assist?) works well too.

Chassis excellent, well compared to the 6 anyway. Way less body roll.

That's my 2 cents worth. ACC will be a must on any future car that's for sure.

Very nice. Do you have MIB 1 or 2 infotainment? Yeah love the Xenons. Took it for a good spin today, I think I'm adjusting to the diesel. There is some serious mid range poke all the same.
