    Still not decided this morning.
Might be a coin toss at this rate
If I really wanted the upgrade which I thought I did I should be more enthusiastic which I'm not so that probably tells the tale in itself.

I think it's a good deal to do it to be honest but hey the gti is great too.

It's a hard call. The GTI PP is a great car, but so is the R which I guess is your dilemma

Does the 161 offers and 1.9% interest tip the scale along with the shear power of the 300BHP engine??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 701 ✭✭✭carsfan

    Hi Ron
Yeah the current offers make the change doable all right at an attractive price.
The power of the R is very accessible with the dsg. I found it a very smooth drive and definitely more of an event than the gti. With free services as well it shouldn't be any hassle to own either.

Then a small voice in the back of my head says "it's a 50k golf!! Are you mad?!"

I had a similar small voice when I moved from a diesel back to petrol Golf. People asked me why I did it and I just told them I wanted something better to drive (i also changed work, which means a lot less driving:D).

The warranty coupled with the three free servicing is a big plus, the bones of €500 saved with the servicing alone.

    I feel your pain.

The dealer tells me residuals on the R are sky high so he says it will be a cheap car from that point of view as they will be sought after on the used market in a couple of years time.

As much as I hope he's right, he's spoofing there tbh, he has no definite idea what residuals / demand for the car will be like in 3 years time. With PCP, you do have a guaranteed future value, but you'd hope for sure that the car will be worth several K more than that, so you'll have some equity in it. I expect a 3 year old R will be worth 2k, maybe 2.5k at a push more than an equivalent GTI PP.

I traded my mint GTI in back in August and they only shifted it on a few weeks ago. The dealer told me he took a hit on it! I think used car demand (and hence residuals) are taking a hit due to the perceived good value in buying new on the cheaper PCP deals.

As for running costs on GTI v R, it largely depends on your mileage. The only real differentiator is MPG - tax/insurance/servicing is much the same or in the same ballpark. I was averaging 34mpg in the GTI and it's 25-26 in the R. My mileage is low - average, so it's not something that bothers me much.

I'm averaging 34 in my gti and hoped for about 30 in the R. Pipe dream?
    I average 25 k km a year.
    You have no regrets joe?

The only time I topped 30 was on a long run on the motorway (Galway-Dublin). My usual trips / commutes tend to be relatively short and stop-start. So it greatly depends on the type of commutes you do. Long motorway / N-Road runs keeping under the speed limit - yes, you should see 30++ mpg. Otherwise, no!

No regrets at all. As I've posted here many times, I'm very happy with the car. Definitely has a sense of occasion and excitement about it that I found lacking in the GTI. Huge pace and the grip is incredible - it really came into it's own in the recent bad weather. The DSG box is probably a factor too (my GTI was manual).

@Carsfan - some people consider it a big risk/decision, others don't. That's all kinda subjective.

I didn't change my car for one main financial/personal reason, which was out of my control. It still could have worked out but I figured that I'd only had my car for about 7 months and on the balance, I decided not to change.

But if your car is one of your main sources of joy in life, and you appear to be in a position to manage the running costs etc, then go for it. You could maybe even put down a deposit to secure the car you want, and then book a loan of the R for a day after xmas. If you drive it for the day and love it, go ahead. If not, you might lose 500e but you its worth it for a more secure and informed decision.

    Good advice @ever last. Thanks.
I'm probably overthinking the whole thing anyway. Love my cars alright but not to the extent they give me that much pleasure that I will spend indiscriminately.

    No problem

If you want to hear about overthinking... The first time I bought a new car, I drew up a list of pro's and con's and obsessed about it for ages. What made me decide was to go for it was that it was manageable and I don't gamble, I rarely drink and have feck all other hobbies so I went for it. It is amazing how quickly time passes and before I knew it, I had it 3 years and it was time to change.

TBF, I don't think trading up in your case is "indiscriminate" spending.. its a couple of grand but if it is a good deal, its a good deal :)

@carsfan, in your case I don't think it's a big "gamble". You're talking about only increasing your monthly by 80 quid. You'll barely notice it surely. It's not like you're going from having no car repayment to paying 5-600 per month. If that was the case then I would say you'd definitely have some thinking to do...!

Did any of you folks who went for the GTIs/Rs look at the Leon Cupra? They're up at 290 bhp for the new year! FWD only which I guess sets the R apart from it...

    I did look.

No 3 door cars for Ireland and no Sub8 pack for Ireland so it was a very quick decision for me.

Weirs that the 3 door never came here alright.. I don't know but I think the design is a bit safe. VAG never go too crazy but I think the Cupra should have a bit more of a racy look!

The interior on the Cupra also lets it down compared to the Golf. The VW is a nicer place to be for sure.

Just a quick question that ye might be able to help me with. Did anyone order a 161 GTI around mid November? If so what production date have you been given?

Sorry not a GTI but I ordered my car (Golf GT) end of November for build week 51, which is this week:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78 ✭✭daraghmack

Thanks. I ordered on Nov 16th, didn't get a production date for ages and now I'm being told week 6 for production. I may as well wait for a 162 reg at that rate.

You'll have it by end of February. It's a long time from then till July 1st ;)

I waited almost 5 months for an R this year. 3.5 months isn't so bad...

anyone received insurance renewals yet ?

I was paying 500 for the mk7 gti and my wife was paying 490 odd for the mk5 gti. The renewal for both cars has gone up 200 each. I've rang around a few places and all are around 10 euros here or there. I'm at the age where insurance shouldn't be an issue ! do tiny mileage and nothing has changed since last year, except I'm older and probably grumpier :)

Mine took 10 weeks from order to arriving at the dealer here in Ireland.

Shop around / threaten to cancel. When I changed to the R, my previous crowd tried to take my pants down and charge me another 300 to keep the premium going. It was hassle, but I wound up cancelling and getting a cheaper policy than I previously had.

I'll defo be haggling with the current insurer, however the 3 other quotes I have from other companies isn't any better :(

Sorry only saw this now. Completely my opinion only, but I think the PP is a fabulous car. It looks great, it's a little more practical, you don't have it that long...

I just wouldn't change right now if I was you. But I'm only some guy on the internet! Anyway, I bought a GTD, I clearly know nothing!
