"It is unclear why cystic fibrosis rates are so different across the globe, but one theory is that a high incidence of typhoid in Ireland during the Great Famine (1845-1852) meant that CF carriers were more likely to survive, leading to the high carrier rate seen in Ireland today." (http://www.javacr.com/cystic-fibrosis/)

There was no famine in Ireland 1845-1852.

And off he goes again on another drivelish diversion.
Honestly, if you wanted to make a tuition recording of how not to conduct a radio interview, you could do worse than simply record almost any episode of this programme.

I wonder could the HSE calculate how much it costs to have the CF suffers in and how much each vist costs them...

I would imagine the cost of the drug would reduce the amount of visits dramatically...

there would have to be a net gain for the HSE... but then its the public service and joint up thinking doesnt happen.

"€92 million is not a lot of money" - I admire the way these mothers are campaigning for their children but they're on some other planet if they think that €92 million is small change.

Yeah they have. There's a whole branch of health economics dedicated to the value of new treatments v. quality of life v. monetary cost.

Even if the drug is approved, her little fellow will have to wait another 10 years to get it. It's only for over 12s.

That's a good point. Not to mention if health improves enough, those CFs not in employment might be able to take up work thus removing cost of disability allowance plus taxes paid.

I presume this will all be looked at because the at the current price it will not be approved.

How about spending €92 million on routine dental care for children - that would have a positive benefit for tens of thousands of children.
