Some UK Muslims think “concentration camps” are close

A news report was broadcast on Channel 4 this week, in which reporter Assed Baig interviewed several Muslims around Birmingham, discussing tension in light of the recent Paris attacks and the British parliament's decision to extend airstrikes on ISIS into Syria.

Baig's interviews took him to a Shisha bar, where he spoke to a group of male Muslims in their twenties and thirties. They expressed feelings of prejudice against them by the public, and made the following comparison.

“David Cameron recently said whoever doesn't vote for the war in Syria is a ISIS sympathiser. So how can we express our feelings without being labelled terrorists? I personally think myself, it's the way that the Jewish community felt when Hitler was actually terrorising them. That's what the British are doing to Muslims within Britain.”

    Baig responded

“Come on, guys. They're not putting you in concentration camps.”

The first interviewer replied, “Not yet. Not yet”, while another said, “It's getting close to that.”

Given the Jewish population of Europe fell from 9.5 million people in 1939 to 3.8 million people in 1945, most of whom were killed by the German state, are the comparisons with Hitler's terrorisation of the Jewish community an overreaction? Or do you think they are appropriate?

Is the comparison with Jews in Nazi Germany an overreaction? 221 votes

Absurd rethortic. This would never and could never happen in 2016 Britain an EXTREMELY tolerant country and society.

The UK welcomes and accomodates people from all over the planet and bends over backwards to intigrate them and supply them with facilities to express their cutlure, yet some people still complain....

    Absolute left wing populist codswallop.

I sure as hell wouldn't like to be non Muslim in a predominantly Muslim area. They talk about minority rights until they become the majority.

I understand that this must be a difficult time for the Muslim population but they shouldn't paint us with the one brush , just as we haven't done to them!
I like to think most people know that ISIS only represents a small extremist part of the religion and is not indicative of the majority of the members of the Muslim faith.
The fact is that there is a terrorist threat, mainly ISIS, and the majority seem to be Muslim. It might seem unfair but protective measures are to protect their safety too and it might lead to the odd mistake but concentration camps , I don't think so!

Attacks against Jews and Muslim women are on the increase. Perps can be non-Muslim and Muslim men.

But if we talk about non-verbal violent attacks Muslim men are still in the forefront. Lee Rigby anyone?

    Da Muss-lims innit?
    Perpetually offended aren't they?
I'm sure there are morons in Britain giving them grief but to seriously suggest that concentration camps for Muslims are on the way is fear mongering nonsense by a group of people who love to play the victim in Britain.

    Glazers Out!

I don't think this is some statement on behalf of the Muslim community. It's an individual expressing his fears. I don't think they are well founded.

The British invented the concentration camp, don't forget.

They also put it into effect in Northern Ireland during the 1970's rounding up Catholics and banging them up without trial in internment camps. They also turned a complete blind eye to the Guantanamo Bay concentration camp.

So don't be so quick to dismiss the notion just because we have flat screen TV's today whereas we only had black and white tellies back in 72.

And what has left wing got to do with anything? Are you saying that accommodating immigrants is "left-wing populist codswallop" or complaining about discrimination is the aforementioned "codswallop"?

This is true. They have a long history of internment.

I'm sure it's not easy being a bearded, robe wearing Muslim in Luton, Birmingham or London right now if you venture out of the Sharia zones.
People may just give you an angry stare.

At the end of the day it's one random guy being interviewed briefly in a cafe, he doesn't speak for the entirity of British Muslims does he? Seizing one individuals hyperbole and using it to cast glib assertions over two million odd people is stupid to say the least.

That having been said, while the lad in the video was talking rubbish, Muslims in the UK are facing a huge upswing in hostility toward them including a big increase in physical violence. When you consider some of the nonsense certain media sectors have come out with I can see how many of them would be worried.

The yanks do it right. It does not matter what accent you speak with nor your ethnicity. Pay your taxes, obey the law, believe in the pursuit of happiness and you're one of us.

I lived over there, legally. One of my first weeks there and I was out for the few pints. Got chatting and was congratulated on "becoming an American." Can you imagine a recent immigrant being congratulated on becoming Irish/British/French etc.

    Different way of thinking.

There would be some hostility towards Muslims by some parts of the public, usually the type who would be starting fights at a football game but the government itself doesn't seem hostile towards them. Now if they were in America then I could understand their worry.

Maybe if a far right party gets elected in the UK, although plenty of groups would be worried then.

The problem is that the Muslim communities' identity is being stolen by ISIS and other extremist organisations. They're going to have to take that identity back as nobody else can really do it for them.

When a group claiming to represent you carries out a whole series of atrocities, it's going to damage your reputation. That's the unfortunate reality of it.

The irony of the comparisons with WWII nazism is that organisations like ISIS actually have more in common with nazi ideology than anyone else has. They are both extremist cults with notions of supremacy and ethnic cleansing. The only difference is the nazis were more organised and had a full modern state to use to their ends.

I don't consider Germans to be nazi sympathisers and I don't consider Muslims to be ISIS sympathisers but both of these horrible organisations have done immense damage to the good name and reputation of their respective cultures.

Comparing slightly uncomfortable situations Muslims are dealing with in the UK or France with nazi treatment of the Jewish community is absolutely hysterical hyperbole.

Of course there's a political and public opinion reaction to ISIS attacks but it's pretty mild mannered and moderate.

The main stream of the Muslim community needs to be much more aggressive about tackling radicalisation and distancing itself from these lunatics and rescuing its own reputation. Nobody else can do that.

Also it's got to be remembered these nutters are making areas of the moderate and mainstream Islamic world uninhabitable and unstable. That's actually impacting millions upon millions of Muslims.

It's ISIS and their ilk doing the damage not some nonsense about a conflict between British,
French, American or any other Muslims and the rest of the population.

You whacked in a jab about the yanks but Muslims in the US are as American as apple pie. They assimilate.

As much an overreaction as calling the words of one person the "reaction of the Muslim community"?

Herded?........a bit OTT? Who did the 'herding'.

I think the Irish 'herded' themselves into Kilburn and other places, both in Britain and the US. Immigrants into any country tend to go to areas where they have contacts and fellow-countrymen/women already living there.

oh I know that, a large amount of the public there don't though. its the evangelicals you need to watch out for there according to the research from pew I saw.

I'm not sure how it was a jab, their most popular presidential candidate has said a few things about Muslims that's isn't exactly positive.

They seem to be quite happy in countries that are not invading Muslim lands for oil or are Muslim lands that aren't being invaded for oil.

You're probably right and I'm wrong. I think I might be overestimating integration in the US.
