Lads, I think this has been asked before but is it no longer possible to book your NCT online and pay in cash on the day?

They don't take any money when you book, you put in your card at the counter on the day. You can book it with an empty top up card if you want. That's what I did the last time.

I'll book mine now and let you know.

Edit: Yep, did it there and nothing came off my card. 2nd of January, wish me luck.

I seen Opel have a new finance deal heard it on the radio. It's 50/50 finance on any new Opel so if you buy a 25k Astra say you pay 12.5k now and 12.5k in July 2017 no repayment no interest. I can't see it being popular here as most people don't trade in cars that have a lot of equity in them. But I suppose if you had a car to trade in worth 10k or whatever with no loan it would work.

I think the big issue with Opel is they are still priced a bit strong about 2k too much on each trim level in the Astra but they are still better than they were at one stage.

Opel have ran that 50/50 deal in the past and I think it went well for them.

Like for like you get a lot from Opel vs other manufacturers imo, the cars are very well spec'd and at reasonably competitive money particularly comparing them to other "Germans". I am a little biased but still.

You need a card to book it online but you can choose to pay cash on the day instead of it coming out of the card.

I don't think the new Astra is that well speced well it's more weirdly speced sc mid spec has nice LED lights and alloys and a large screen radio but doesn't have a full trip computer, front fogs or an arm rest stuff you'd expect to have at mid spec. So in other words to have a nicely speced Astra your buying Sri or elite spec which as they are at the high spec end are pricey enough. I don't think they are any cheaper than a golf spec for spec but maybe I'm wrong.

I do min 30k per year so not much poodling around :) cheers guys for the tips, never had a dpf before so wasn't really sure and most people were saying just remove it.
Grand ill drive it as usual and the moment something acts up ill remove it.
As for the seats yea its a b6. Its the side support for now that I'm not used to and didn't pay much attention to it q the test drive but ill get used to it id say.
Price was 27k so around 6.4k euro.

Could well be wrong, so don't quote me on it, but I had a DPF message on the C5 ("risk of particle filter blocking") and was looking around for the best fix (as I was under the impression that forced regeneration would be a fairly expensive process).

The reason I opted against removing it, fairly early on, was cos people on here firstly suggested that if it comes in down the line that for NCT, etc. where they may start checking that it's present on correct on cars that are supposed to have it, you'd be without and would be down again (financially) getting a DPF fitted.

The other, more pressing issue (for me, anyway) was that apparently a diesel with the dpf removed gives out loads of black smoke under acceleration. I've seen this on a few cars (whether its caused by DPF removal or not, I don't really know) but in my opinion, there's no way to make your car like the one from Uncle Buck any quicker.

(and on top of that, my mechanic took care of me and really only charged me about €50 to sort out the service light and do a forced regeneration on the car anyway, so it was relatively cheap and cheerful).

So I'd be against it, but that said, I've no idea if the info i was making my decisions on was accurate or makey-uppy, so..

The issue I've heard about doing a forced regen is that it is just a temporary fix and can't be used constantly to unblock the filter as it will eventually cause it to fail.
I think in general a good long blast once a week for min 30mins is enough to keep it clear or relatively clear. 3mins commute in traffic will kill it for sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,657 ✭✭✭CIP4

The thing about a dpf filter is that if it is getting loads of long trips it will regen itself. You should only have to do a forced regen if the car never gets the opportunity to do a regen ie all short trips. Your correct you can't keep doing forced regen as eventually your dpf will be ruined.

But if you are doing the appropriate driving and the car is still not performing regens itself then there is something wrong sensors can go etc and they may not necessary bring up a warning light but they will prevent the car doing a regen. So in other words before the car regens it will do a system check before it starts to check everything is ok if it isn't it won't regen.

Well I don't know how mine was being drove before I had it, but I'd be doing a fair old whack of 'town driving'.

However, every, say, 6 weeks, it'd get two weeks where it's going for about 12 hours a day, across the country and back again (repeatedly). So my driving will give it a good workout in general.

As far as I know (again, could well be wrong) a forced regeneration will effectively clear the soot out and fix the problem. However, if you go straight back to just doing the school run, the soot will build up again fairly swiftly and you're straight back to where you started.

But if you are pottering about the motorways and N roads a bit, and every now and again bring it up in the revs, it'll take care of itself (as that's the driving it was intended for)..?

I'm in the 30 day window for getting online insurance quotes, I haven't got my renewal yet from my current insurer, but the numbers I'm getting online are...err... disturbing! :(

Mine has gone up from 625 to 910. That was my renewal and I shopped around but couldn't get anything near that.

I was told that the reason for the hike is due to the fact that insurance companies paid out huge sums in claims over the last number of years and the money that was brought in from premiums was too little to cover the payouts so they had to increase it in order to make the money back.

    It's absolutely sickening.

Yo guys, back to this problem again, this bent arb is constantly catching and grinds quite a lot. If I could manage at all to wait until I'm home for the weekend to get it fixed, I'd be sorted. 70 miles to do in the meantime though. Don't know how it got so bad! Appeared to be all of a sudden too..

Reminds me of when Toyota used to put those 'Welcome to your new Toyota' cassettes into their cars in the 90's.

Passed this milestone today literally as I was parking up. Still not high miles 81k miles but at the same time there was probably a lot of early mk2 meganes that never reached that mileage before hitting the scrapyard with so many electrical issues.

Anyone recommend a decent tyre place in Limerick city, Adare, Rathkeale, or along the M7 to Dublin? Doing a bit of travelling next week and might not make it home in time to collect Oponeo, and then get them fitted before nct.

Thread level is legal, but close, and to be honest I need tracking done anyway. Don't want to risk having to don't now, and then again after new tyres are fitted.

Looking at Hankook Ventus Prime 2 and Goodyear EfficientGrip so far, in 205/50R17. €100 each online. Most places are offering me crap for that price, or some other rubbish 'made by Bridgestone for €130 plus.

There is something seriously wrong there, the amount of surface water on that stretch of road can be crazy, even after just a shower.
