Shouldn't be too bad to insure. I've never paid more than a grand in the 4 years I've had my own and I got it when I was 23.

I don't know where you're getting the drama comment from. It's probably quieter and smoother at regular driving than your diesel Megane. In fact, with the DSG in D and pootling around, I'd guarantee it.

35MPG is about the best you can expect on a decent journey. Technically the manual is meant to be more economical, but in real word I'd be surprised if it wasn't less economical. Around most of town the DSG has me in 5th or 6th gear. I know for certain I'd rarely leave 3rd if I was driving a manual version out of sheer laziness.

Thanks for that. I've never driven or even been in a mk5 gti golf. I just would have thought they had a louder performance exhaust set up from the factory. But from what you are saying they sound very refined when pottering around. Are they much harder on the road suspension wise than standard golfs.

Not much worse than a Sportline to be honest, if anything it feels better sorted in normal use IMO.

Mk5 Golf gti's are great. About as mad as a 320d to drive but in a good way.

My next car will be a Mk6 R if I can find one in a couple years

Seeing a good few in recent times, you will get one for sure ;)

My next car I have already. Just not assembled yet... I have to sort the spare car first before I can even think of sorting the new old car!

Spare car needs a seal in the gearbox, sort a few leaks, rebuild the p/s pump, shims for extended full lock and a HICAS delete, then test :)

New car... Have to find an M pump with 7mm or bigger elements (trip to a tractor breakers some weekend), HX35 turbo and some silicone pipework in order to have all parts ready. I got everything else or have installed everything else (avantgarde springs, new shocks, bigger brakes, hydro etc)

All in the new year hopefully! :)

Id love an mk6 R!! I find the GTI is just a bit under powered compared to the other cars of its generation...

Ive never seen one in the flesh though, or for sale for that matter, is there any in the country?

Spend 5k on fiddling with an R and you have a serious 450bhp awd machiiine.

Just checked them out on autotrader in the UK, jaysus they hold their value well! But that's to be expected seeing as you'd still be looking at the bones of 20 k for a mk6 GTI

I wonder what kind of power you could make with a remap on a mk6 GTI? Should get 240/250 with just a map right?

I think there's two lads on this forum with Golf Rs - JoeA3 (or similar) IIRC.

Ah I think it's just a humerous representation of the fact that he's into cars, you'l probably see him go to the car park and get into a FWD Kia Rio owned by his nan.

    They actually have a club,lol.

    They're Mk7s though. The Mk6 R didn't sell well at all.
    Missed the Mk6 bit :o

Potential engine out oil loss from S4 turned out to be a pair of rocker cover gaskets 22e a side.

    Praise Jesus

The mk7 R seems to be selling very well in Ireland! Lovely motor! Finally people are getting brave buying cars again...

I might be wrong, but GMFV is a reassurance that you won't lose your shirt? Could this be part of the reason?

Yes. Although you want it to be as low as possible

Anyone wants to buy a Punto? :o

    What's up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,925 ✭✭✭GvidoR

It needs some under body rust repair. Not sure if I'm up for it yet. Will bring it over to a mate on Thursday and put it on a hoist to see how bad it is.

Ah crap ok, unless it's very extensive I'd say give it a go :)

If I do end up selling it, someone will get a great Punto. *sheds a tear*

    Did someone call me ;)

MK6 R's are rare - I know of 1-2 that were sold in Ireland, I'd be surprised if total sales here hit double digits. Weren't a big seller in UK either. The MK6 in general had 2 problems - (1) it's lifecycle coincided with the economic downturn and (2) it was a heavily re-skinned MK5 rather than an all-new model and equipment-levels were poor enough.

A MK5 GTI and a diesel Megane are about as different as it gets, but as others said, it isn't some untamed beast either - it's quite a normal sedate car to drive if you drive it that way. Hell, even my MK7 R can be a very sedate shopping trolley when I want it to be.

The MK5 GTI is a great car, if you can find one at this stage that hasn't been ragged. There's still a few decent ones out there if you look and have patience for the right one to come up.

I was mad to get an ED30 before i ended up getting the ST, bigger turbo than GTI so you can get 300bhp from a map alone.

But you saw sense and bought the right car.....twice! Cip4 could always buy an ST 5 door!

Hey guys, can anyone confirm what this is or if it is the tie rod end? It appears to be bent and is catching.

Pic is gone after I refreshed the page but what you had circled was the boot for the inner tie rod. It's the focus ya? Long inner tie rod and short tie rod end.

    Anti roll bar.

Edit: Unless you mean what's coming out of the rubber boot? Inner tie rod.
