I thought Eric was talking about the two E38s, pics didn't work for two E65s then!

it looks well ****ed, boot doesnt close, tyre is flat, alloys are ****ed.

Agreed. But the price is right and he's also prepared to negotiate. Could be a bottomless pit though, you'd want to know your Phaetons.

It's a 2k 3.2 Phaeton, it's hardly going to be perfect. I could live with ****ty looking alloys and other crap for that price.
I'd just give it a good valet and cruise in comfort.
I'd be curious why he didn't stick it through the nct after May.

with that reasoning, thats why your last car was an utter lemon tbf

if you think doing the above is going to make it drive, I reckon you are very much wrong

Plus, the absolute no no for me is not washing the car for the photos. That speaks volumes about the owner, and car.

I simply cannot understand this mentality.

So you are comparing a normal family estate diesel Japanese car to a 3.2 VW Phaeton?
Good god you're crap at this trolling aren't ya.

no I was implying that your assumption of giving the phaeton a valet would equate to cruising in comfort.

I then insinuated that your poor judgement on the paheton might have been the reason that your last purchase was unsuccessful.

    No trolling intended

It is not an assumption its more of a thought. It hasnt been tested in 6 months and for a good reason I imagine but at the end of the day its a 2k phaeton which is why I implied that you can't expect a perfect car. Its filthy inside hence why I said to get it valeted.
You have no idea what my judgements were when I bought the Honda and nor do you know how much of a heartache it was to admit to myself that I had made a huge mistake.
But at the end of the day there is not one reliable car out there.
Was my car a lemon? Yes, it was but on the other hand it never left me stranded in the middle of nowhere.

True enough tbh. Didnt mean to sound harsh. Can happen to anybody as you rightly say.

I like Phaetons and would like to own one. That one is a heap of sh1te though and that's coming from me, I'm not too picky at all

Even if you got it nearly free, who would want to own a front wheel drive  flagship gaz guzzler with a sh1tty V6 engine and still have to pay €1809 tax (€511 per quarter)?

Oddly enough I saw on adverts him offering to test it for the asking price.

He sounds like an eejit then. Just test it at that point.

He is a dealer and like all the worst dealers, they won't put a penny into anything until they sell it.

€750 VRT rebate on the Phaeton. I'd say it was NCT'd, it failed and he wants rid as the repair bill is too high.

    €2250 - 750 - haggling = €1300.

If its driveable it may be good for exporting and then for parts. If it could get to the boat in Rosslare and trailer it from Cherbourg it might be interesting to some of the East Europeans.

Oh right so its after paying the costs then. Makes sense then but I'm curious, it would need to be trailered out of the country as no insurance company would keep insurance on it I imagine?

So that Phaeton, fair enough it hasn't the right engine and it's the inefficient tax.

But tax is irrelevant in this thread as is fuel consumption. If you got that Phaeton @ sub €2k assuming it passed some kind of inspection, then even if you put in €1k it'd be a pretty nice comfy barge for less than €3k.....

I have a mint 06 W164 ML 500 with only 54K miles on it that I use for towing (rally car) and the odd time when I need more space than my runabout Mini Cooper S. Can't beat V8 power for a proper tow machine. Taxed as 5 seat crew cab (€330) and it is off this week for pro-conversion to lpg. It currently returns about 22 mpg on motorway use, and 18 when towing. I reckon I will see around 32 mpg cash equivelent (towing), before the VAT savings. Way more economical than a proper large engined diesel jeep. The ML itself cost well less than half the price of a similar diesel 4x4.
    Will report back actual outcome!

Well, had it converted and it is a great job, fuel consumption is about 8- 10% heavier than on petrol but it feels and drives every bit as smooth and powerful on LPG. With the VAT saving it is doing the cash equivelent of about 40MPG towing!!

There are similar age RWD V8 flagships with test out there for €2k

Why on earth would anyone want to spend €3k on this FWD V6 one (and hope and pray it will pass the test for that outlay) and still pay max tax?

You on drugs tonight, Duke? :p

NCT out nearly a year and these cars are utter junk (and that one looks like it is worse than most of them). The worst ever yoke to have disgraced the 3 pointed star. It's cheap I grant you, but I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

I'm on a roller coaster that only goes up my friend :P

But yeah, no idea why I posted that really. Cheap and ropey do not bode well in here.
I find myself looking at these a lot. I dunno if they would be classed as barges by the mass but I should think so, certainly compared to what I drive. Very difficult to find a turbo petrol non-silver automatic one though. I should imagine when I graduate I will either have one of these or a 99-00 Jag Xj..

Sure most of the yokes here are cheap and ropey. Some, however are more ropy than others. :D

S80 are very solid cars, dull and dated now (and of course boring) but reliable and pretty much indestructible. And cheap. Father in law has had one for about a decade now and it just refuses to die. Most he spent on it during that time was a belt change iirc. I'd get an auto though.

There's also a lot to say for having a straight 5 cylinder turbo charged engine (180bhp) for your 2l tax...
